MISSING

True and unexplained stories

Lest we forget.

This book is dedicated to the search for truth.

Translated from French to English

by Jacquie Bridonneau

WARNING

You are now entering the universe of MISSING, true and unexplained stories. All these stories were related on the web, in newspapers, in podcasts or in other documentary resources. I tried to limit myself only to the facts in each affair, but whenever I touched upon my personal feelings about the hypotheses that in my mind were the most plausible and probable, this is only what I think and in no case whatsoever questions the official conclusions drawn up by the authorities. Please also note that I wrote this book to respect the victims, their friends and families.

PREFACE

Have you ever felt like you could have disappeared from the face of the earth? You’re on vacation and you decide to go take that hike by yourself, the one you’d always wanted to do, but never got around to it.

Today is the day.

You’re looking out over the horizon from the trail that nature has sculpted in this granite cliff.

You’re ready.

You take your phone out and shoot a panorama of the landscape and then you switch to a selfie mode to immortalize the moment... and suddenly, without knowing why, you teeter. Your hand grabs the metallic parapet separating you from falling, and you then take a long breath.

You were scared.

If you had fallen here, no one would ever have found you, no one would ever have known what had happened to you, your disappearance would be an eternal mystery.

With these eleven true and mysterious stories, Esther Hervy opens the door to cold cases about missing people. Events that light will never shine upon and that will always remain enigmatic, perhaps forever. No one heard a thing, no one saw anything. The police force did its job, but that wasn’t enough. Did some supreme entity trigger these tragic events? Does one God protect us and the other obliterate us? What happened to all these people? Why didn’t that girl stay in the elevator? All these unexplainable disappearances that of course give rise to a myriad of hypotheses that are just as incredible. And if that isn’t enough, those who believe in paranormal phenomena will add just enough supernatural events to keep everyone in the dark, and the enigma will never be solved.

Esther Hervy knows that each time exit a tunnel, you’re blinded by the light, she knows your eyes always require that fraction of a second to tame the sudden brightness. But there is nothing bright here, the tunnel is long, there’s no exit and the mystery remains unsolved. With Missing, your hand won’t let go of the parapet, yet the author will take you on a long trip... on the guardrails of the unknown.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FLANNAN ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS?

Eilean Mor Island, 1900

This is how the story begins...

Let’s take a long step backwards for this first story, right to the beginning of the 20th century, in 1900. Here we are on tiny Eilean Mor Island, in the western Scottish Highlands. Just a lone church built by an Irish saint called Flannan (7th century) is present in the hostile and rugged landscapes in this miniscule isle lost in the middle of the Atlantic. Back in the day, shepherds used this little chapel as a shelter when they took their herds out to pasture on these lush and green hills fed by the rainy climate. Because of local beliefs though, the shepherds always left before nightfall, never wanting to spend the night in this place believed to be haunted. In this book we won’t talk about all the legends of the past, but it nonetheless is interesting to know that these superstitions have not disappeared; some people visiting the island still kneel in front of the ruins of the church, though they all leave before sunset. The mysterious reputation of the island consequently dates back before the strange disappearance of the three lighthouse keepers and time and rationality of today’s modern era haven’t done much to lessen it...

Back in 1899 Flannan Lighthouse was built on Eilean Mor Island to guide the many sailors in this high-traffic area of the sea. Since the chapel was built, no other buildings were erected here and little by little even the shepherds deserted the island, which at the end of the 19th century had become completely inhabited. Three men would stay in this new lighthouse and guard shifts would be put in place so the men would be able to leave the island for two weeks of well-deserved rest every six weeks.

The day after Christmas in 1900, the Hesperus, under the orders of its captain James Harvey, was heading to Eilean Mor Island, to rotate one of the lighthouse keepers. Joseph Moore was on the ship as he was the one who would be taking over the shift in Flannan Lighthouse. Much to the sailors’ surprise though, as the ship neared the cliffs, the light that they’d always counted on to dock couldn’t be seen on this inky winter night. Intrigued, the captain blew his foghorn to signal the ship’s arrival, but the night remained dark and silent as if the darkness had placed a lid on the land. He fired his alarm gun and flare, but once again, no one came down to greet them.

The sailors were able to dock the ship alone, with no assistance, and Joseph decided to walk up the steps leading to the lighthouse while James waited for him at the bottom. The two men looked at each other; both seemed to have a feeling of foreboding though neither of them would admit it. Despite the strange feelings he had, Joseph quickly went up the stairs to the lighthouse to find out why none of the three lighthouse keepers had come down.

Not a soul

When he got to the door, Joseph discovered several things that seemed out of kilter to him, strengthening his anxiety. Firstly, when he opened the door, there was not a single sound. Only one of the oilskins was hanging on the peg, the two others were absent. He carefully continued his investigating, walking to the kitchen where he noted one more strange situation. Three plates were still on the table, and all contained food. One of the chairs had fallen over, as if the person sitting on it had violently pushed it when leaving. As if a sudden danger had forced him to flee and terror had made him jump so suddenly. The clock on the wall had also stopped. Moore had the strange impression of being a late witness to unsettling events that had taken place right
