CHAPTER 1
Harry’s eyes swept the expansive sandy beach as he headed toward the bar in the restaurant area of the hotel. Used to eating dinner at six, the seven o’clock seating was a bit of a stretch for him. He came down to the bar at 6:30, hoping to narrow the gap between pool time and dinner time. Other than a few couples seated at cocktail tables just inside the door, the bar wasn’t busy. Harry seated himself on a tall chair with a clear view of the soccer game playing on the large-screen tv.
The sand was awash in sunshine, and at this time of the evening, the sun cast a warm glow over the resort’s blue umbrellas, turning medium blue into a deep cerulean that matched the sea.
I think I’ll try that Super Bock,
he said to the bartender. With all the hoopla in town with signs everywhere, and tee-shirts and ball caps imprinted with the logo, I have to see what I’ve been missing,
Harry smirked, but the bartender didn’t crack a smile.
Harry had done his research, with lots of time on his hands. They made the beer in Porto, north of The Algarve resort where Harry had stationed himself for three weeks. The brand was launched in 1927 and was rebranded years later.
The story attached to the rebranding spoke to Harry’s heart. Three entrepreneurs crossing the ocean in a boat that they had built and transformed along the way matched Harry’s plan to move forward. His thoughts just now confirmed his resolve. I need rebranding if I am to survive the disaster that is now my life.
The bartender placed a glass imprinted with the Super Bock logo on a paper coaster on Harry’s wobbly table. Are you having dinner with us tonight, sir?
Harry nodded, gave his room number to the still unsmiling bartender, and scrawled his unreadable signature on the pad of paper placed before him.
