300,000 years ago, in the northern forests of Africa…

Abel held up his hand to signal to the hunting party to stop. He motioned for them to crouch low, and the group of some two dozen men behind him did so. He wasn't sure exactly what had caught his attention, but something…

His hand shot out and caught the venomous snake around the neck in mid-strike. It writhed angrily in his grasp, its body and tail whipping around hard, lashing the skin on his arm and chest. He slammed the creature's head into the trunk of the tree it had struck at him from and its writhing ceased.

He held up the dead animal for the others to see and they cheered. Abel smiled, but didn't let the accolades inflate his ego.
