Mental and Emotional Health in Children - Kathleen A. Gallagher
Chapter 1
Mini Dialogues to Impart Life Truths
The following speech patterns between adults and children are casually dropped off in a non-lecturing way as opportunities present themselves. For example, at home, they can be passed along when getting ready for school, eating, driving in the car, watching TV, shopping, etc. In school, it works well to engage in a dialogue just before starting whole-class or small-group lessons. In the beginning, the adult does the talking for several weeks until children become familiar with the language. Within a short time, the pattern switches between a question and free-response answer, meaning children just call out a reply. The dialogues are meant to be ongoing as they usually only click
with children when they face circumstances where the words offer a solution to a current life
