Love Made a Way - Stacey Borden
On Your Mark…
The alarm clock blared its discontent for the peacefulness. Cara peered over, catching a quick glance at the time before her fingers finally settled on the off button. It was four thirty in the morning, and if she hurried, there would be just enough time to take in a tall glass of freshly squeezed orange juice that would partner well with a bowl of her favorite fruit and grain cereal, a quick shower to follow and out the door before the rest of the world began to stir.
Cara knew she needed to be diligent, and today was no exception. A healthy diet, exercise, and a good night’s sleep would prove to be her ally, she reminded herself. Yet she longed to break free, just once, and take in one of those burgers that was smothered and covered in that greasy, gooey, yummy stuff that promised a five-pound increase to one’s waistline just from looking at it! To sleep in and deny that life existed outside of the cozy confines of her flannel sheets brought forth a sigh of contentment.
Why do you feel compelled to do this, Cara? All of this work and dedication…for what? Besides, who would care if you just threw in the towel?
Cara shrugged off the mockery her mind was striving to feed her. Refusing to allow this inner voice to contradict her heart’s longing, she pulled her laces taut, stood up, closed the door behind her, and left the safety of home.
This morning’s run would cover a five-mile stretch. Although she considered it a short sprint in comparison to the marathon she was training for, it was a route that had earned an unfavorable reputation among most runners. The path was narrow and led through the hillside where stamina was a must. Although some may choose a longer, more predictable route, not Cara. Goal-oriented, it was unlike her to take into consideration that there are times one may need to take the longer way around to reach a destination; and given the history in her book of life, she concluded that any challenge should be hit head on and never let it break your stride.
With the sun ascending in the distance, radiant beams poured forth their light, infiltrating the darkness that had blanketed the sky. Warmth began to embrace the atmosphere, extinguishing the coolness that had been held in the night air. Although Cara could now clearly see the condition and the direction of the route that was laid out before her, it didn’t make it any easier. As each footstep touched down, hardened nuggets of earth met the underside of her feet, conveying a message of dislike for the intrusion. The harassment wasn’t a deterrent for Cara as surrendering to adversity was not in her vocabulary; the journey would continue come what may.
Over the years, wind and rain had pounded upon the earth’s surface, scattering numerous large stones along the hillside’s winding path. It was almost as if nature had strategically placed them there to keep roamers on course. The lush greenery that framed the hardened earth swayed in the warmth of the early morning breeze. Adding to the beauty that surrounded the rugged terrain were petite wildflowers that had sprung up unannounced to share in the splendor of creation.
Even when the road is rough, there is still goodness to be found,
she reflected.
A quick glance at her watch provided the assurance she was making good time. With only a short distance left to go, she began softly humming one of her favorite tunes. Captivated by her melody, the birds of the air cheerfully accompanied her as they danced on the grand blue stage positioned above. Making their debut, white cotton-like clouds drifted in from the east to freely offer a cool covering of protection that her body welcomed.
"Someday I too, will soar. My wings will be of great strength, graceful
