    CHAPTER ONE

    THE EXCHANGE

The planet called Matereia was a beautiful sphere of blue orbiting a yellow sun. Under a fuzzy layer of clouds, the planet’s surface was splattered with colorful continents of green, brown, beige, and white. The world was abundant with natural life but was far from pristine.

A glittering array of gold starships encompassed the entire world, and they served an ominous purpose. Evenly spaced apart to form a massive net, the vessels floated over the planet in a geosynchronous orbit. They were there not to protect but imprison those that lived on the planet. Armed with some of the most powerful weapons in the galaxy, these starships were more than capable of doing their task.

The other thing that marred this beautiful planet was the presence of five cities. Each of these five cities was uniquely shaped, and each served a specific purpose. The capital city was located in the middle of gigantic farmlands and was constructed in the shape of a star. The second city surrounded a massive monolith in the middle of a desert and served as the world’s primary manufacturer. The third surrounded an active volcano amid a thick green jungle and generated a steady supply of energy to the other cities. The fourth was the shape of a cylinder, mostly underwater, and dedicated to medical research.

The fifth and last city was a true monstrosity. This metropolis towered over rolling hills of cyan grass. The world’s media, both news and entertainment, originated from there. Known as the Aerie, this city was a gigantic tower of five circular tiers held aloft by a single massive pillar. Each tier contained a city bustling with activity.

In the very middle, the third tier was where citizens of the Aerie converged. Being the heart of the Aerie, the third tier was home to towering skyscrapers and stout civic service buildings. Whether they were the wealthy from the top tier or the impoverished from the bottom tier, they all had business there.

Near the edge of the third tier, a throng of citizens sat enthralled on rows of benches in a sprawling park. While humans of all types dominated the crowd, a multitude of different beings from across the galaxy were also present. Most were life-forms that resembled humans. They differed from humans in many ways. Some had unusual skin tones like red or green. Others possessed horns, wings, or tails. Some appeared to have the heads of animals. Less represented were aliens of a completely nonhuman configuration. These walked on all fours or possessed more than five limbs. Some even slithered or wriggled across the ground.

A shining dais stood before the motley crowd. At the back of the dais, a looming gray wall displayed a gigantic seven-pointed golden star flanked by a pair of white wings. On both sides of the dais, Counselors of the light, gray-haired humans in flowing white robes, stood with a pious demeanor. At the very center of the dais, Peacekeeper Ensign Whitney stood. With an earnest face, she stared out into the crowd. She had a pixie haircut, and her face was soft and delicate. Her blue eyes gleamed with wide-eyed innocence.

Looking around at the sea of faces staring back at her, Whitney spoke, "Before we end this lesson, I want to tell you that I am truly grateful that you have come. It brings me great joy to know that so many of you wish to learn about the world of Archon and of my people’s faith in the Radiant Starlight. As always, there is so much to share with you. I am still learning as well and that we are all on the same journey toward peace and harmony in the Radiant Starlight.

"I will end today’s lesson with the tale of the Morningstar. When everything had just begun, there was naught but the Bright Creator, the Radiant Starlight. And from the Holy Brilliance came the innumerable stars. About the Greatest Star, the newborn suns revolved, and they rejoiced for life had just begun.

"The young stars were both great and small. Every star was loved and treasured by the First Sun. Around the Radiant Starlight, they flew. Together, their light glittered in harmony and was dazzling to behold. But one star burned brighter than the rest. This was the Morningstar, and only the Radiant Starlight burned with a greater light.

"Proud was the Morningstar. It burned brighter and brighter than its siblings but could not outshine the greatest light of them all. Sad became the Morningstar, who asked the Radiant Starlight why it could not burn any brighter. And the Bright Creator said, ‘None can bring light brighter than I. That is the law of all, and it cannot be broken. Were you to burn brighter than I, then all would be in ruins.’

"And the Morningstar fell into despair. The Morningstar became weak and began to fade into the darkness. The Radiant Starlight was moved to act and said, ‘Morningstar, do not falter, for there is a way for you to grow. Fly from my sight, and you will see your own light be as bright as mine. Go forth into the darkness. Go now, my child.’

"And the Morningstar fled from the Radiant Starlight. Into the vast darkness, it flew until the glory of the Bright Creator was no more. There in the darkness, the Morningstar did burn with a blinding light, and it was content. And for a time unknown did the Morningstar shine alone. But then about the Morningstar the others came. They imitated their wayward sibling, and the darkness was now lit with a multitude of stars burning as brightly as they could.

"And now the Morningstar grew angry, for its light was no longer the brightest. The Morningstar now burned with hate. With blinding light and searing flame, the Morningstar made war with its siblings. With every star slain, the Morningstar grew stronger. But there seemed to be no end to Morningstar’s rivals. Destruction and death now filled the heavens.

And the Radiant Starlight became sad, for its children now fought one another. The Bright Creator sent forth all his children into the darkness. For all the violence brought by the Morningstar, the children of the Radiant Starlight would strive for peace and harmony. Together, they unite to counter all the ills brought by the hatred of the Morningstar. To this day, the war is still waged in the heavens. To this day, we, the people of Archon, bring the Radiant Starlight to you.

After a moment of silence, the crowd erupted with applause and joyful cheers. Whitney blushed at the reaction and fidgeted while waiting for the applause to stop. When the crowd became calm, she announced, Thank you for your time. I am truly grateful that you are willing to listen to what we have to say to you. Through the Radiant Starlight, we wish peace and prosperity to each and every one of you. Go now with the Bright Creator.

As the crowd began to disperse, Whitney walked toward one side of the stage. The Counselors of the light stood and watched the crowd leave. As Whitney approached the end of the stage, a young human ran up to her and yelled, Whitney! I want to ask you a question!

Whitney stopped and asked, What is it?

That was a nice story, the young man said. The human wore worker’s clothes—a rugged gray jumpsuit with scuffed black boots. In earnest, he asked, If the Radiant Starlight made the stars and the Morningstar is one of the stars and the Morningstar is evil, does that mean the Radiant Starlight is evil?

Whitney jolted in shock. What? she asked with a grimace.

A diminutive pink-skinned humanoid being ran up beside the human and asked, I have a question too. Why did the Radiant Starlight make evil in the first place? I mean, the Radiant Starlight made the Morningstar, so this means the Radiant Starlight made evil, right? More crowd members heard this and approached the stage again.

Whitney did not answer but looked to the Counselors who were hurrying to her side. What do I say? she asked with panic in her voice.

Don’t say anything! Heston barked. He was a tall, wizened, pale-skinned human that still possessed a muscular build. He stood next to Whitney and glared menacingly toward the members of the crowd.

Another member of the crowd shouted, In the beginning of the lesson, you said the Radiant Starlight is all-powerful and can do anything, right? So could the Radiant Starlight make a light brighter than itself?

Another screamed, What is the darkness? Where did it come from? Did the Radiant Starlight make the darkness? How does light make darkness?

This lesson is now over! yelled Ahlgren, another Counselor. Come along, Whitney. We have to go now. She grabbed Whitney’s hand and pulled her off stage. The rest of the Counselors were right behind them.

As they fled the stage, they heard one last member of the crowd yell, How far did the Morningstar go? Didn’t you once say that the Radiant Starlight is everywhere? How does that work? Wouldn’t the Radiant Starlight being everywhere destroy darkness?

Hurriedly they walked behind the stage toward an Archon shuttle. Ahlgren said, I don’t know what happened. Before, they simply watched and listened. Now they are asking questions. We will have to make better preparations next time.

Heston said, You did a wonderful job, Whitney, but you should not have mentioned the Morningstar.

But why? Whitney asked. That is the first story in the Holy Book of Archon.

True, Ahlgren said, but the people of Matereia do not need to hear everything in the Holy Book just yet. We will have to limit what you say in these lessons from now on. Only discuss the peaceful and constructive aspects of the Holy Book. You should avoid the stories of origin and the war in the heavens. You should especially avoid any tales of conflict.

Okay, Whitney complied. She had complete faith in the Counselors and never questioned them when they told her what to do.

Another Archon approached them with a serious demeanor. She was an Asian woman wearing the black uniform of the Monitors, Archon’s internal police force. She stated, "Peacekeeper Ensign Whitney, I am Monitor Captain Araki. As per Chief Monitor Kofi’s orders, you are hereby summoned to the Vigilant Eye. Come with me immediately."

Oh, Whitney said. The Monitors were respected and feared among Archons. A summons from them was a serious issue.

Go along, dear, Heston said. You better not keep the Chief Monitor waiting. He led the rest of the Counselors aboard the shuttle.

We must board the ship immediately, the Monitor Captain Araki insisted. Follow me.

Whitney put on her helmet, which had been affixed to her belt. Both she and Araki became enveloped by a glowing light, which was accompanied by a low rumbling hum. The light shined brighter, and the hum grew louder and deeper. This was the Radiant Starlight, a mysterious power held by all Archons.

Araki soared up into the air, leaving a light trail behind her. Creating her own light trail, Whitney followed her as close as she could. At high speed, they flew over squat buildings and between towering skyscrapers toward the rim of the third tier. Floating near the edge was a ship shaped like a dismembered eagle’s head. The large menacing ship was painted black with purple trim. Jagged dents, tears, and holes scarred the ship’s hull.

The two women entered the Eye’s large hangar bay. Walking past Archon ships parked within, Whitney followed Araki toward the main corridor. Araki spoke into the commlink on her wrist, "Peacekeeper Ensign Whitney is aboard the Vigilant Eye, Chief Monitor. She then turned to Whitney and ordered, Get to the bridge. Kofi and Flint are waiting for you there."

Whitney nodded in acknowledgment and began making her way to the bridge. As she walked down the main corridor, she felt the ship shudder as it launched into the air.

Several hundred miles away from the Aerie, glittering gold streaked across a clear blue sky. A flotilla of starships flew in tight formation over a broad valley of cyan grass. They were block-wedged shaped and painted a shiny metallic gold. A closer look revealed the ships were covered with advertisements. Images and words in bright neon colors flashed and pulsed with an aggressive hypnotic rhythm.

The flotilla halted and hovered. The leading ship, designated Golden Hammer Team Corvette 1-1-1-1, left formation and soared down to the earth. When the ship reached the ground, several sets of landing gear extended from hidden compartments in the hull. The grass fluttered around the ship as it landed. The ship’s engines ceased, but the advertisements continued their optical assault.

A section at the top of the ship’s slanted hull slid open, and a gilded man emerged. He strode toward the front edge of the ship, wearing thick ornate golden armor. Like the ship, his armor was adorned with blinking advertisements. He did not wear his helmet but held it at his side. His rich brown wavy hair fluttered with the breeze, and his face was etched with golden circuitry. Robust and middle-aged, the man’s blue eyes glittered and betrayed his devious intellect. His smile was broad but not warm. He was human, but more importantly, he was a Corsol, a corporate soldier. Most significantly, he was the chief executive officer of the Golden Hammer, a division of the Corporation of Sol.

He looked around at the landscape. Underneath a clear blue sky, his ship sat in the middle of a lush cyan field of grass that sprawled for miles. On one side, soft waves lapped against a white sandy beach. Beyond that, a peaceful ocean stretched into the horizon. On the other side, a majestic mountain range was seen in the distance. Absolutely perfect, he said, this is the ideal location for our city.

A female Corsol emerged from the ship behind him. Also human, she wore a much smaller and less ornate version of gold armor. A 1 was labeled on various parts of her armor. Plain and dignified, the woman had white skin and dark hair tied up into a bun. Unlike the man, her face was not etched with gold circuitry. Wearing a headset, she held a data pad in her hands. She said, I have a report ready for you, Chief Executive Officer Raux.

Raux turned to face her and exclaimed, Zhanine! Just look at this place. From orbit, the scans of the area were promising, but this exceeds my expectations. We needed nice level ground, lots of open air, but there is a coastline and a mountain range around to give people a pretty view. Of course, the citizenry will have more than enough to see within the city itself, but it always nice if you can get the complete package.

Fascinating, sir, Zhanine said without a hint of emotion. She moved toward him and offered the data pad to him.

There are many avenues for profit, my dear, Raux said, and real estate is one of the most lucrative. You’d do best if you were to pay attention when I talk about these things. What’s this? He scanned the data pad. He saw several blocks of text on the screen and frowned. I am not going to read the whole thing.

Our fleet still remains in position about the planet, Zhanine explained. Our orbital blockade appears to be complete and efficient. Any ships attempting to leave should be repulsed or destroyed. There have been no attempts to escape, however.

That will soon change, Raux said as he skimmed through the data. What of the Archon renegades?

Our fleet is also tracking the movement of Archon renegades. They have broken up into several groups, and their movement is sporadic.

He continued scanning the pad and said, Any idea what they are doing?

They appear to be fighting with one another.

Good, Raux said with a nod. Very good. Anything else?

Zhanine said, We’ve noticed a number of tremors in this area and other parts of the planet. They seem unusual. The tremors do not resemble anything we’ve seen before. Our people are suggesting we wait and observe this phenomenon.

No. We move forward. Opportunity and profit wait for no one. He handed the data pad back to her. Any sign of our guests?

I personally contacted them and was told that they would attend, Zhanine reassured him. Our sensors last reported two ships moving toward our position. She looked behind Raux and pointed. There they are right now.

Raux turned to the sky and saw two ships flying side by side. Both were heading toward them. One was colored white and tan and appeared to be a leisure ship. Sleek and oblong-shaped, the ship was named Cloudbreaker and sported a pair of delicate curved wings flowing from the sides and another fan-like fin from the rear. The graceful ship glided down while the other ship, Vigilant Eye, lumbered through the air like a wounded beast.

Raux and Zhanine went back into Team Liner 1-1-1-1. Soon after, the golden ships floating in the sky broke formation. They positioned themselves in a wide circle then floated motionless again. Minutes later, the landing bay doors on the side of Raux’s ship slid opened. A flat and wide vehicle called an airskiff exited with Raux, Zhanine, and two other Corsols standing atop it. Flying through the air, the golden airskiff was a circular platform with an engine attached to bottom back. A sleek standing guard rail lined the edge. Crosshatched with small floor bumps, the platform was black with a golden block hammer emblazoned at the center. Raux and Zhanine stood at the front. The two others stood at the back. Wearing helmets, they were dressed in a similar fashion to Zhanine. Like Zhanine, their armor was labeled with a number. They were numbers 2 and 3. Number 2, a man, was operating the airskiff’s steering pedestal while Number 3, a woman, held a holovideo camera.

The newly arrived ships landed next to Raux’s. The Cloudbreaker was dwarfed by Team Liner 1-1-1-1 while Vigilant Eye towered over both. From the underside of the leisure craft, a passenger door swung down to the ground, revealing a staircase on the other side of the door. A woman with silky gray hair and pale skin appeared in the doorway. Wearing an elegant beige gown adorn with gold and silver jewelry, she walked down the steps in a graceful stately manner.

The skiff flew toward the leisure craft and landed in front of the woman just a she reached the bottom. Her green eyes stared daggers into Raux. Am I late? she said.

Of course not, Invidia, Raux said with a smile that stretched his face wide. In fact, you are just in time. Zhanine moved to open the skiff gateway, but Raux stepped ahead her. He swung the gateway open and held it while beckoning to Invidia like a welcoming host. I’m delighted to see that you’ve brought no guards. Such trust bodes well for our endeavors.

I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself, Invidia said. She stepped aboard the skiff, making sure the hem of her gown did not get snagged by the gateway. You’ve decided to build a city, Invidia said as she moved to stand by the rail guard. That will be quite an investment on your part.

What better way to show our goodwill than to prove a place of living, education, industry, commerce, and education? Raux asked as he motioned to the skiff driver to move the vehicle toward the black warship.

Matereia is more than capable of providing all of that, she answered. While the airskiff flew, Invidia looked around and said, It is a shame that you chose this location for construction. I specifically left this area alone because of its beauty. Now it will be spoiled.

We won’t spoil this area as much as we will enrich it further, Raux boasted. Invidia rolled her eyes in disgust.

A large section on the underside of the Cloudbreaker swung down. A skiff much smaller than the Corsols glided out. Two humans in purple jumpsuits were the sole occupants. One drove while the other held a holovid camera. Raux looked surprised when the small skiff flew alongside.

That is Plutocrat Strateus’s camera crew, Invidia explained. They are here per the agreement made between Strateus and Peacekeeper Ensign Whitney. He has the rights to capture footage of her in all official matters.

That’s right! Raux exclaimed. I had almost forgotten that I had requested the presence of Whitney. No offence, but I daresay she is the most important person on this planet. Number 2, take us to the Archons. The Corsol Airskiff glided toward the black warship with the smaller airskiff right behind it.

The Vigilant Eye stood upon several large landing gears. A large ramp extended from a sizable doorway on its side. Two columns of humans marched out of the doorway and down the ramp. At the bottom of the ramp, the columns split apart into two rows.

The smaller airskiff hovered in the air with the camera operator recording the scene. The Corsol skiff landed before the Archons, and at once, a large black man moved forward to greet them—a tall bald black man with a grim face. He wore a black armored harness over a dark purple skintight suit. A pair of large pauldrons protruded from his shoulders. A purple cape draped behind him from his pauldrons. His face was fraught with a grim earnestness. Clutching his helmet under his left arm, he slammed his right fist into left breast and declared, Monitors and Peacekeepers of Archon, stand ready!

Raux proclaimed, Thank you, Chief Monitor Kofi. Welcome, citizens of Archon. Raux looked toward another man who stood near Kofi. With graying-brown hair, he was white man with faint scars on his face. His garb was a gray harness of armor over a tight indigo bodysuit. His pauldrons were not as large as Kofi’s but were still quite pronounced. A long indigo cape draped behind him from the pauldrons. Like Kofi, he held his helmet under his left arm. Peacekeeper Commodore Flint. Raux bowed in his direction. His cold blue eyes peered at Raux with suspicion.

Chief Executive Officer Raux, Flint acknowledged with a stone face, thank you for your invitation.

You are welcome, said Raux with a smile. He looked at the others that stood behind the two men. Two rows of Archons stood next each other. The row of ten Monitors were identified by black harnesses over black suits. The row of ten Peacekeepers wore a gray armored harness over the same black suit. Between the two rows was a young blonde woman who wore a gray armored harness over a red suit. Like the others, she held her helmet under her left arm. Raux beamed at her and said, Whitney, how are you, my dear?

The coltish young woman fidgeted in place and said, I’m fine. How are you, Raux? I mean, Chief Executive Officer Raux.

I feel wonderful, Raux said. Today is going to be a wonderful day.

Raux, Kofi bellowed, why did you demand that Peacekeeper Ensign Whitney attend? She is a low-ranked Peacekeeper. She is incapable of participating in matters of this magnitude and should be excluded. Whitney stiffened and grew warmer under her collar.

Raux answered, Whitney is here because she is responsible for the creation of the alliance that now binds all three of our peoples. She is the one who ended the costly war that plagued Matereia. She also leads the Lesson of the Radiant Starlight to the citizens of Matereia. They hang on her every word, and her popularity is only growing. It is only right that she be present for this announcement I am about to make. I want to make sure everyone on this planet will hear my announcement and having her here will ensure that.

What announcement? Flint asked in a stately manner.

I am not about to make it right now, Raux said with a snide voice. He looked at the formation of Archons and asked, Is this the complement of this ship? How small. I expected there to be more.

Kofi coughed and explained, This is a . . . an honor guard . . . of sorts. The rest of the ship’s complement is on board.

Oh, Raux said, for a second, I thought you were suffering from a major shortage of crew. Say, that last battle was a big one, wasn’t it? Huge. Lots of fighting. Lots of killing and dying. Forgive me for saying, but you Archons seemed to suffer major casualties in that fight. I am glad to know that isn’t true. Raux smiled while Kofi bristled, and Flint clenched his jaw.

Most of the casualties were suffered by the traitorous renegades, Kofi said with anger.

And yet many escaped, Invidia stated. It is high time they were dealt with. My world is plagued by them. I am receiving reports that renegades are terrorizing my outposts and smaller settlements.

They will soon be apprehended or destroyed, Flint said. I thank you and Raux both for not taking the initiative. It is the duty of all loyalist Archons that we be the ones who will bring them to justice.

Then they should be brought to justice immediately, Invidia stated with venom. I have half a mind to send my own forces after them. Were it not for this alliance and the Corsols, I would have acted already, and the renegades would be no more.

Do no fear, High Plutocrat Invidia, Kofi proclaimed. We will destroy them very soon. While the Peacekeepers are Archon’s main battle forces, the Monitors are dedicated to policing and punishing those who would stray from the path of the Supreme Utopian.

And had you and your Monitors done your job, Invidia accused, my world would not be in such great peril. Nearly an entire fleet of Peacekeepers went renegade, and you did nothing until it was too late.

Grimacing with shame, Kofi insisted, That was a grievous mistake on my part, that I will admit. But I shall remedy the situation. We loyalist Archons simply need more time to recover.

I do not have any more time to give, Invidia retorted. I must act now.

Please, Raux interjected. Now is not the time. We all have great concerns but that must wait a moment. Come now. We are here to celebrate our alliance. Chief Monitor Kofi, Peacekeeper Commodore Flint, and Whitney, would you three please join us? He beckoned them to board the Corsol airskiff.

The . . . honor guard will stay behind, Kofi ordered. Stay in formation until we return. He turned to Flint and said, Let’s go.

Come along, Whitney, Flint said. The young woman bounded on to the airskiff. With an officious demeanor, Kofi and Flint followed her.

Raux asked, Invidia, darling, are you aware that this entire conversation was recorded by your own people? That wasn’t exactly something you want to keep for posterity.

Strateus is careful not to broadcast footage that would incite the public, Invidia said. You also have a camera crew, Raux.

But we haven’t started recording yet, Raux said as he looked at Number 3, who held her holovid camera at her hip.

Let’s get on with this, Invidia groaned.

As you wish, Raux acknowledged. Number 2, take us near the building site. The Corsol airskiff rose up into the air and glided to an open area of the fields. The other airskiff kept pace with the camera operator still recording. Both airskiffs stopped in the middle of a lush grassy field. Zhanine gestured to Number 3, who began recording with her holovid camera.

Raux strode to the front of the craft and faced the holovid camera. In a well-practiced voice, he announced, For the record, I am Chief Executive Raux of the Golden Hammer Corsol Division. I welcome you. This is going to be a great day. We are here on the planet Matereia. This division has become involved in an interstellar pact known as the alliance of Matereia. Present are representatives of our two allies. Representing Matereia is High Plutocrat Invidia. Representing Archon is Chief Monitor Kofi, Peacekeeper Commodore Flint, and Peacekeeper Ensign Whitney. They shall bear witness as I present a proposal for the alliance. We shall participate in an event that will serve as a gesture of peace and unity. We three, the Golden Hammer Corsol Division, the Monitors and Peacekeepers of Archon, and the citizens of Matereia, will go on a Grand Tour.

Grand Tour? Invidia asked. I was wondering what you had in store for the alliance.

The Chief Executive Officer explained, Each city will host a seven-day festival showcasing all that the Golden Hammer and the Archons have to offer. We Corsols will show samples of our wares. The full catalogue of technology and information will be made available. Meanwhile, the Archons will continue presenting their Lesson of the Radiant Starlight, which will undoubtedly share their glorious history with us. In return, Matereia will show us your culture by simply hosting the events.

How generous of us, Invidia said sarcastically.

Raux announced, The tour will continue through each city, lasting a week per stop. Then the tour will end here. He raised his arms aloft and gestured to the surrounding area.

Here? Kofi asked as he, Flint, and Whitney looked around at the empty field.

Get on with it, Raux, Invidia said impatiently.

Smiling hungrily, Raux proclaimed, Allow me to officially introduce you to the location of a brand-new city, the Exchange. Here, the Golden Hammer Corsol Division will construct and operate a whole city dedicated to our alliance. By working in unison and under Corsol supervision, the Exchange will be peaceful and prosperous.

Flint stated, There are plenty of cities on Matereia. Forgive me, but this does seem unnecessary.

I concur, Invidia said with a hint of indignation. Building a new city would be a wasteful effort.

The Exchange will neither be unnecessary nor wasteful, Raux explained. While the Golden Hammer builds this city, we do so for the benefit of all. This is a city for everyone. Archons, Matereians, and Corsols will call this city home, and it will lead us into a most profitable future.

Kofi looked around the empty field and said, I see nothing here. Did you bring us all the way out here to look at an empty field? Surely, you could have found a better way to make your announcement.

I was not finished, Raux stated. You are here to see a first glimpse of the Exchange. He turned to Zhanine and said, Number 1, give our ships the signal to begin projecting the hologram. Zhanine pressed a button on her data pad.

On the plains before the two airskiffs, flashing beams of light streamed down from the sky. Whitney looked up and saw that the light beams were made from projectors on the ships encircling the sky. She looked down at the plains again and now saw a dazzling metropolis materialize before her. The city was surrounded by a high wall of stone featuring ornate engraving. Beyond the wall, tall ornate skyscrapers jutted at the center. Whitney, Kofi, and Flint seemed taken aback by the sight before them.

Take us in, Number 2, Raux ordered. Swiftly, the skiff flew across the plains and entered the metropolis, avoiding the wall and buildings as if they were real. The airskiff glided several stories over the streets. The bustling city sprawled for miles. The illusory buildings included occupants who bustled about offices and worked at desks. Pedestrians representing humans and various aliens bustled along the sidewalks while clusters of citizens gathered together in conversation. Hover vehicles sped down avenues and obeyed street laws. The illusion was complete with every element somehow casting shadows from a consistent angle.

Stopping at an intersection, the vehicle turned so that it faced the skyscrapers at the center of the city. Raux stood at the front of the skiff so that the skyscrapers appeared behind him. Zhanine stood behind the skiff driver while the camera operator moved the center of the craft.

Raux said, Behold, the Exchange is a symbol of our alliance. The city is designed specifically to show our peoples working in harmony. Look around you. We are in the outer circle of the city. This circle represents the Matereians. This is where the citizens of this world will live and work. There will also be hotels for visitors. This circle will also include embassies representing Star City, Monolith City, the Vortex, the Furnace, and the Aerie.

Invidia and the Archons looked around. The outer ring of the city featured architecture that was nearly identical to the other cities on Matereia. The specific section they were in resembled Star City with its colored glass edifices. In the distance, other sections of metropolis resembled Monolith City with its geometric stone buildings.

The airskiffs glided toward the center until it reached a ring of the city that was white, silver, and gold. The Archons immediately recognized the architecture. The buildings were sleek and gleaming. Long and wide staircases led up to elegant buildings that were adorned with Archon iconography. The gray stone boulevards featured an ornate cobblestone design. Spires reached into the sky like beams of light. Archons of all ages and occupations milled about. Peacekeepers, engineers, and Monitors went about their business. Counselors of the light led white-and-gray-robed children to learning centers. Flint and Whitney felt pangs of homesickness.

Kofi was visibly upset. Raux, how did you learn of Archon architecture? he demanded.

Raux shrugged and said, I have no idea. My design team did this. I’ll have to ask them.

    Please do, Kofi growled.

This is beautiful. Whitney gasped with her eyes tearing. I feel like we are on Archon again.

That’s just wonderful, Raux said with a proud smile. Flint, what do you think.

Flint sighed then said, Your people did an excellent job. This is truly amazing.

How long has it been since you’ve seen Archon? Invidia asked.

    Decades, Flint said.

Whitney said, Just last year but still . . .

Thank you for the memories, Raux, Kofi snarled. Now tell us what this is all about.

Raux explained, This circle is home to the Archons. Here will stand temples to the Radiant Starlight and museums displaying the various wonders of Archon culture, society, and history. Obviously, this is where Archons shall live. Most importantly, this is where the Archon embassy will be located.

You expect Archons to live here? Kofi asked. And why would you expect that?

Because of the treaty, Raux stated. We are in agreement. The treaty specifically states that we are to make an exchange not only in trade but in other aspects as well. Is this a problem? The people of Matereia are embracing the faith of the Radiant Starlight. You have Whitney to thank for that. Are you to share your faith then depart, leaving nothing? Surely, it would be necessary to leave contingent of Peacekeepers here.

Peacekeepers are a space-born force, Flint explained. We do not hold planetary garrisons. Nor do the Monitors.

Then how do you hold planets? Raux asked.

Custodians, Flint said. When Peacekeepers retire, they become custodians acting as guards and caretakers of Archon worlds.

Not everyone becomes a Counselor? Invidia asked.

Not all Peacekeepers are qualified to become one, Whitney added.

That’s enough! Kofi warned. Speak no more of our ways.

Please, Kofi, Invidia implored. That was a bit of harmless information. We all want to know how you Archons live. It does make me wonder what happens to you Monitors when you retire.

We die in battle, Kofi intoned.

    Not surprised, Invidia muttered.

Raux said, Well, then you are going to have to send a contingent of custodians here. Problem solved. I am sure they will be a good addition. Retired Peacekeepers are probably brimming with experience. It’s settled then.

No, it is not, Kofi challenged.

Flint said, Please, Kofi. We will discuss that later. Let us hear what Raux has to say. Kofi glared at Flint but said nothing.

Raux announced, Let us move on to final part of this presentation.

The two skiffs glided toward the center of the hologram city. Tall gilded buildings stretched into the sky. They were plastered with blinking, flashing advertisements displaying a plethora of products. Clothes, shoes, vehicles, weapons, food, and other various goods were promoted nonstop. The wide streets were lined with shops. Hologram citizens scurried in and emerged with bags of products. Hover cars and trucks moved up and down the streets at steady pace. The vehicles entered and left the center through tunnels that lead them underneath the Archon circle to the Matereian section.

With great pride, Raux proclaimed, This is the area representing the Golden Hammer Corsol Division. A hardworking core of Golden Hammer employees will live and work here. This part of the Exchange will include a holovideo studio, an entertainment district, an amusement park, a casino, a sports arena, and a massive shopping mall. Of course, there will also be five-star hotels to house those willing to pay for such luxuries. And there will be the corporate headquarters of the Golden Hammer.

What? Invidia gasped. You are making this planet your headquarters?

With uncharacteristic earnestness, Raux nodded and stated, It is time the Golden Hammer stopped wandering. We’ve spent the better part of a millennium wandering the stars. It is time for the Golden Hammer to make a home for itself. This planet is perfect.

Disgusted, Invidia laughed. She said, I don’t know what to say.

With sidelong glance, Raux said, Oh, yes, you do.

The High Plutocrat took a deep breath then said, I am against this city for a number of reasons. First, you are despoiling this area. I have taken great pains to protect the biomes of this world. Every city was built with this in mind. All cities produce waste and pollution. Given what I know about the Golden Hammer, this city will produce an astounding amount of filth.

You have me there, Raux admitted jokingly.

I am against the very design of this city, Kofi stated. It is made with the Golden Hammer at the center where you will hold the seat of authority. He narrowed his eyes and proclaimed, Archon serves no one but the Supreme Utopian. To suggest otherwise is blasphemy, heresy, and is a direct affront insult to the power and the glory of the Radiant Starlight.

Invidia said, You have Matereia on the outskirts. We do not possess any buildings that reach the height of the Archons or the Golden Hammer. Indeed, the Golden Hammer not only stands at the center but your buildings tower over all.

Raux said, That is one way to look at it. Here’s how I look at it. You Matereians are on the outside, but this means you are the ones that are holding this together. And by being on the outside, you possess the greatest amount of area. The Archon ring is smaller, and the Golden Hammer is but a dot to your big circle. Now, the Archons are between the two of us, but that is because they serve as a bridge between our two peoples. And the Golden Hammer buildings are taller, but that is because we are a beacon of service to the both Archon and Matereia. We loom over you two, but you both surround us. With that in mind, we are all equal.

I knew you’d dazzle us with some mental gymnastics, Invidia sneered.

I don’t care how this city is designed, Kofi bellowed. Archon will not bow to the Golden Hammer. He took threatening step forward and glared at Raux. Flint moved to stand beside him but seemed ready to hold the Chief Monitor back.

Raux held his hands up and said, All right, all right. Everyone is getting upset, and I don’t approve. I have worked very hard on this, so to say I am disappointed would be an understatement. Listen, please. With deadly earnest, he spoke, We need to get an understanding here. This Exchange is going to be built. The Golden Hammer is footing the bill here. All you have to do is have some of your people live here. The Golden Hammer Corsol Division is providing everything—the design, the resources, the workforce. All of that is coming from us. This is the Golden Hammer’s gift to you. This gift is a symbol of peace. We all want peace, don’t we? What do you say, Whitney? Pleadingly, he looked at the young woman. Kofi, Flint, and Invidia all turned slowly to look at her.

Whitney flinched. She mumbled, I don’t really know. The city is weird. I don’t know what to think about that. But I do think we need peace on Matereia. We need to move on. There is a lot we all have to do. We Archons need to fix our fleet. What’s left of it. Then Invidia and the Plutocrats need to go on taking care of their people. And the Golden Hammer? I guess you are doing what you do already.

That’s right, Whitney, Raux said. We all need to move on, and we’ll be able to move on by making this city work. Both Matereia and the Archons have lost a great deal. He sighed and looked up to the sky. Then Raux intoned, It would be a shame if you lost more. The Golden Hammer has traveled so far to this world. We have given this world so much, and we have even more to give. For a price, of course. And that’s the thing. There is a price for everything. All the Golden Hammer wants is a city built right here on this very spot. You know, the entire Golden Hammer fleet orbits this planet. That’s a million Corsols in thousands of starships great and small. For us to come this far and leave empty-handed would be a great shame. And for us to leave without giving Matereia something would be even worse. He glared at Invidia and almost whispered, Everyone would lose if that is the case.

Are you threatening us? Kofi demanded. His eyes bulged with madness.

Raux seemed disappointed. Yes, he said sheepishly. I am threatening to invade this planet and simply take it by force.

Then we will fight you! Kofi seethed. We will fight you to the death!

Chief Monitor Kofi, Flint said calmly. We have the lives of millions to think of. A war with the Golden Hammer would result in a catastrophic death count. Is that what you want?

Yes, Kofi said as he turned to face Flint. I will not allow Holy Archon to be brought low by this golden bastard even if it means razing this entire planet.

We have a greater mission at hand, Kofi, Flint snapped. Bolger, a High Peacekeeper, went renegade. Nearly an entire fleet of Peacekeepers followed him. We must return to Archon and give news of this. That will not happen if we all die in a war with the Golden Hammer.

Kofi glared at Flint with impotent rage. Swearing under his breath, he walked away with his head held low. Kofi paced maniacally as he wiped his mouth.

Invidia pursed her lips and nodded. She stated, "You are right, Raux. You are always right. This world could use another city. It could use another city right here. A city that provided more distractions than the ones I already provide. More is good. She walked up to him and stood right before him. She said, As you command, Chief Executive Officer Raux. Let it be done. As High Plutocrat of Matereia, I give my official approval of the Exchange. I welcome this new city, and I welcome the both the Golden Hammer Corsols and the Archons. You both will be excellent additions to our humble world."

Thank you, High Plutocrat Invidia, Raux said with a solemn expression. What say you, Chief Monitor Kofi?

Thinking quickly, Flint answered for Kofi, Your thinly veiled threat does not frighten me, Corsol. However, we are in no position to bargain. There are too many lives at risk. Not just ours but the lives of the Matereians as well. Truth to be told, you Corsols do offer a great deal. For the sake of this planet, I must agree to the building of this city. I, Peacekeeper Commodore Flint of Holy Archon, give my official approval of the Exchange. May the blessing of the Radiant Starlight shine upon us all.

Thank you for your endorsement, Peacekeeper Commodore, Raux said. He looked at Kofi and asked, I take it that the Peacekeeper commodore is speaking on behalf of all Archons? Grudgingly, Kofi nodded and grunted. Raux said, Well then. This puts me at ease. I was glad you all have seen things my way. It would have been a great shame if any of you had said otherwise.

Excuse me, Whitney said tentatively. I wish to speak. Her eyes darted around nervously as they turned to face her again.

What is it you wish to say, Whitney? Raux asked.

Archon renegades still wander this world, Whitney stated. I feel it is the responsibility of the Peacekeepers to bring them to justice.

    And we shall, Flint intoned.

Both Monitors and the Peacekeepers shall do our duty, Kofi stated. Monitors specialize in this very threat. We are dedicated renegade hunters. With the help of the rest of the loyalist Peacekeepers, we should be able to eradicate them in no time.

But this world belongs to the Matereians, Whitney said. They must also feel like they should do something about the renegades.

You are correct, Invidia said. While you may feel it is your duty, the real responsibility falls in the hands of Matereia. She looked at Kofi and defiantly said, We will be the ones to bring them to justice, and we shall do so immediately.

They are traitors, Kofi said with a snarl. We must punish them according to Archon law.

They are invaders, Invidia stated as she glared back at him. As long as they are on our world, we will deal with them. The last thing I want is more Archons running rampant across this planet. Kofi’s clenched his jaw, and his body stiffened. Flint moved forward as if to speak.

I think we all should deal with them, Whitney blurted. All of us.

What? Raux said with smirk. "What do you mean by all, Whitney?"

We have an alliance, Whitney said. I think we should all work together. It would be a great showing if we went after the renegades as a united force.

I like it, Raux said impishly. Just yesterday we were at each other’s throats, and now we fight as one? That is a great idea. He nodded and folded his arms in satisfaction.

That is a preposterous idea, Kofi growled.

    Why, sir? Whitney asked innocently.

Flint stated, We also have our differences. Only recently, we were fighting one another. That would take even more time to resolve.

Kofi declared, Time is something we do not have. We must deal with the renegades quickly.

Which is why Matereia will deal with them, Invidia said. You hardly have the strength or numbers to deal with the renegades.

Which is why I think it would be a good idea to work together, Whitney said. We Archons should hunt the renegades down, but we need all the help we can get. This means the Golden Hammer as well.

Of course, Raux said with a smirk. I would not let my Corsols miss an opportunity to stand alongside such powerful fighters.

This will make sure the people of Matereia see the alliance as a good thing, Whitney said. It will show everyone that we can work together and live in peace. Kofi scoffed while Invidia and Flint stared at Whitney with incredulity.

Raux announced, I’m with Whitney on this. We should form a . . . coalition. This will be an example of our future together. You all must admit that this is the only solution. The Archons are not going to sit while Matereians hunt down the renegades, and the Matereians are not going to let Archons run loose. And we Golden Hammers, well, we aren’t just going to sit and watch either. Raux raised one hand and moved it as if he were revealing an advertisement and said, The Coalition for the alliance of Matereia. That isn’t very notable or catchy, but it will have to do.

With a piercing glare, Invidia said, Raux . . .

This is not up for debate, Raux said. The renegades need to be brought to justice as soon as possible. We also need to show everyone that this alliance is for real. The hunt for the renegades begins now. All I need to hear is a verbal agreement from the leaders of Matereia and the Archons. He looked at them and stated, I would be ashamed if you did not comply. If that is the case, then the Corsols alone will act. This means the entire Golden Hammer fleet would be put into action. This world will be swarming with my Corsols.

Invidia, Kofi, and Flint stared blankly at Raux while Whitney looked at their faces. Seething, Invidia spoke first, As you wish, Chief Executive Officer Raux. Matereia willingly participates in this coalition you speak of. As soon as the renegades are eliminated from this planet, a new discussion shall be brought to the fore, I promise you that.

Of course, Raux said nonchalantly. Chief Monitor, it’s all up to you now. Remember, this is for the benefit of all, but this is specifically for the benefit of you few Archons that are left. He smiled at Kofi, daring the Chief Monitor to disagree.

Brooding, Kofi spoke softly, We who represent Archon . . . agree to the creation of this coalition. The hunt for the renegades is our paramount concern. We hereby dedicate our entire effort to helping rid this planet of that traitorous scourge. Flint closed his eyes and palmed his face.

And there we have it! Raux said with the clap of his hands. The Grand Tour of the Matereian alliance shall begin, and it will end with the opening ceremony of the Exchange. And in between, the Coalition for the alliance of Matereia will hunt down the Archon renegades. What a momentous occasion this has been. Thank you all for coming. I promise you all that the Grand Tour and the Exchange will be a boon to everyone. This city will stand for a thousand years, and each one of those years will be more profitable than the next. This conference is adjourned. Zhanine made a slashing motion at her neck, and Number 3 stopped recording. Raux said, I want multiple copies of that footage to be made immediately. We will send a copy to the Corporation of Sol headquarters when we are able.

May we leave now? Invidia asked impatiently.

Yes, Raux answered, but if you want to stay, you are welcome. I plan on making a survey of this city. Seeing the design in full scale is much different than seeing it as a blue print or a miniature. You could always give your input.

Invidia crinkled her nose and said, No thanks. I have important matters to attend to.

As do we, Kofi announced. The issue of the Archon renegades must be addressed.

Yes, it does, Invidia said without looking at the Chief Monitor.

Very well, Raux said. We’ll take you back then.

That won’t be necessary, Invidia said while she gestured to the camera crew to approach. The small airskiff pulled alongside the Corsol airskiff. Invidia boarded the small craft.

We three will fly back on our own power, Raux, Flint announced.

As you wish, Raux said. Thank you all for coming. And special thanks to you, Invidia. Farewell, and may your days be filled with profit!

You are welcome, Raux, Invidia said coldly. Flint, would you three please accompany me to my ship? I could use an escort.

Of course, Lady Invidia, Flint said. The small airskiff pull away and made a beeline back to the Cloudbreaker. The three Archons became aglow with light and flew off the Corsol airskiff. In seconds, they caught up to Invidia.

Driver, Invidia said, I want you to take us to the Archon ship first. The driver nodded, and the skiff veered toward the black ship. When they arrived, the two rows of Archons still stood in the exact same place as before. Invidia’s airskiff hovered near them while Kofi, Flint, and Whitney landed.

At ease, and prepare the ship for departure, Kofi ordered. The two rows of Archons relaxed with a gasp of relief then scrambled up the boarding ramp.

Goodbye, High Plutocrat Invidia, Whitney said.

Goodbye, my dear Archons, Invidia said as the skiff began to leave.

Just as the three were about to enter their ship, several tremendous roars followed by multiple explosions thundered in the distance. Flint was the first to turn around. He looked toward the hologram city and saw bolts of light streaking down from the sky.

No, Invidia screamed from atop the skiff as it pulled away. Not yet, damn you!

    CHAPTER TWO

    ATTACK OF THE RENEGADES

In the distance, the massive holographic city rumbled with the sound of violence. With their bodies shining a coruscating light, a swarm of Archon renegades streaked between faux skyscrapers. Dazzling white bolts flew from their hands and streaked toward the ground. The explosions sent chunks of earth flying through the city’s phantom buildings. A massive Archon warship hovered over the illusionary city. Painted purple with silver markings, the ship bore battle scars and was much larger than the Vigilant Eye.

Staring in disbelief, Flint, Whitney, and Kofi stood at the top of the Vigilant Eye’s ramp. "That’s the Vehement Denial!" Kofi exclaimed.

They’re here, Flint swore. The traitors are here!

Archons, get out here! Kofi screamed into the doorway of the black starship. Monitors, Peacekeepers, assemble at once!

Flint took a few steps down the ramp. He stopped, and his body began to glow with a bright energy the Archons called the Radiant Starlight. The light was accompanied by a low throbbing hum. His body floated upward as the light grew brighter. Prepare for battle, he ordered. Donning his helmet, he floated upward and away from the ship while staring at the raging battle.

Whitney and Kofi’s bodies both began to glow and hum as well. Putting on their helmets, they floated upward to join Flint. The other Archons piled out of the ship and followed suit. Twenty-three Archons now floated in the air, surrounded by a humming glow.

Peacekeepers, follow my lead, Flint said. Despite the roar their power emanated, Flint’s voice was heard thanks to the mic in his helmet.

Monitors, do as I say, Kofi barked into his own mic.

As one, the Archons flew toward the city, leaving streaks of light behind them. Flint led the Peacekeepers who flew in a disorganized mass behind him. Whitney positioned herself behind and to the right of Flint. Likewise, Kofi flew with his Monitors looming behind him in a line formation.

Whitney studied the Archon renegades ahead of them. They appeared to be attacking the hologram city. Glowing balls of energy called photon bolts erupted from the renegades’ hands and slammed the ground below. Puzzled, Whitney wondered where Raux and his Corsols were. She became worried for the three Corsols who did not seem equipped to handle such an onslaught.

Pair up, Peacekeepers, Flint ordered. Whitney, you are with me.

Yes, sir, Whitney complied. She noticed movement in the corner of her eye. Turning her head, she saw ten Corsol officers in heavy armor flying toward the city, followed by a fleet of skiffs carrying more Corsols. They had emerged from the Raux’s ship. The armored Corsols were executive officers and could fly due to the rocket packs on their backs. The Corsols on the skiffs were called the Numbered. They wore light armor and were equipped with assault rifles, heavy machine guns, and missile launchers. Knowing the ranks were bolstered, Whitney felt somewhat more confident.

The renegades did not seem to notice the Archons and Corsols approaching them. They continued their onslaught of the hologram city. As the loyalist Archons and Corsols drew closer, the renegades turned their attention to them. Without hesitation, the renegades launched a blistering salvo at them. A wall of photon bolts flew with glittering tails streaking behind them.

Evasive action! Flint bellowed, but the Archons were already veering out of the way. Bolts of lights chase them as the Archons flew in every direction. One Peacekeeper was struck dead center. His body exploded into a shower of sparks and gore. Another Peacekeeper was hit by a glancing shot. He spiraled out of control and struck the ground at full speed. The impact sent an explosion of soil and sparks high into the air. Flint, Kofi, and the Monitors escaped the frontal assault with swift and precise maneuvering.

The Corsols suffered catastrophic losses. Several executive officers were killed before they could react. All the airskiffs were destroyed by multiple photon bolts. Weapons and bodies flew in every direction. The Numbered that weren’t killed by the exploding airskiffs plummeted to the ground. Their bodies tumbled and bounced for several yards before coming to rest.

Attack! Kofi screamed. Kill them all! He resumed his flight path toward the renegades. He flew up close to one renegade and held a single outstretched hand. An explosion of light erupted from Kofi’s hand. Rather than fire a single photon bolt, the Chief Monitor executed an attack called Shooting Stars, firing several small bolts at once. The small bolts spread out in a cone-like path and struck the renegade full-on. Bloody and broken, the traitorous Archon tumbled as he fell to the earth. Kofi looked around for another target. He spied several renegades flying toward him. With both hands stretched out before him, he fired photon bolts in rapid succession. His ferocious attack was dodged by the renegades who then attempted to return fire.

Flint soared over the battle. From his vantage point, he targeted several renegades. Hovering, he gathered energy in his right hand, which grew brighter with each second that passed. He unleashed the energy and launched several photon bolts in rapid succession. His attack took the renegades by surprise. Three were struck down by his well-aimed shots before the others realized that attack was coming from above. Firing their own photon bolts, they flew up to meet him.

Flint saw cannon fire streak by him and head toward the ground. He looked up and saw the Vehement Denial firing its cannons at him. Cursing, he fled toward the earth.

The remaining Corsols rallied and attacked. From launchers located on their armored forearms, the executive officers fired garish green blasts at the renegades. The green energy sizzled as it passed through the air. The Monitors held their own. They avoided the renegades attack but could not connect with their own. The Peacekeepers fought a desperate battle of survival. They attacked sporadically
