About this ebook

This book is the first of a series that chronicles the adventures of a young lad named Derrick as he wades through life, struggling to understand his strangely bizarre reality from the backdrop of the secular world he knows. Like many of us, he is completely oblivious of the fact that he's been deliberately endowed with a gift by the commander in chief of the hosts of angel armies and superintendent of the heaven and earth that gives him an edge in the battlefield of life. The adversary, the ancient serpent or shrouded one, who always likes to be incognito, figures him out to be a threat to their enterprise before he could even comprehend the underlying significance of his rather unusual gift and how unique the experience is in terms of associating the conspiracy of suicides with the fallen ones as its advocate or agent provocateur in the denouement of life as revealed in the written Word. Deftly, they orchestrate his termination; but in a strange twist of events, it turns out to be part of a larger plan, a script within the script. His soul is given a tour of hell to see a selected few of its occupants post judgment. There he sees at least two peculiar people he once knew in the earthly realm who all died of suicide, and there couldn't have been a more graphic lesson on what the consequence tag for suicide is. Alas, now armed with this firsthand knowledge, it is time for him to be returned to his body to be the warrior he's chosen to be; hence, a certain sage of spiritual warfare and ambassador for Christ Jeremy is summoned to be the earthly key in unlocking heaven's portal for Derrick's return and ultimately activate him for the battles ahead.

    About the Author

    111 Coulby Street, evening

Derrick is sitting on a wooden chair with barely any of the leather left on it. He leans his left elbow on the plain wooden dining table, and with his right hand, he holds on to a seven-by-eleven-inch poster that has a black and white picture of one of the kids in the neighborhood. The kid's name is Sean. He was only sixteen when he committed suicide three days ago. Derrick is inundated with a sense of loss as he tries to stifle his crying. In a subdued outburst of frustration, he blurts out these words as though Sean is seated across him, Why? Why? Sean, I asked you a dozen times if all was well. He dips into his breast pocket and produces another slightly wrinkled three-by-five-inch black-and-white photo. It's a close shot of Sean and himself, and it was taken about six months ago. Tear drops fall on the picture, and he quickly dries it off. Apparently the picture evokes precious memories. Nonetheless, his eyes are riveted on the picture in a way that betrays his deep contention with accepting the reality that his friend is gone. He makes a fist and slams it on the table, and turning his head to the left slowly, he murmurs aloud, I told him to get rid of that pet of his. I just don't get it. Oh, Sean, Sean… You didn't have to take your life. Whatever it was, we could have gone through it together. This time, he let out a loud cry like a loose pressure valve, wailing for his friend indeed.

A week after the funeral had been done, Derrick is walking home along an unusual route when he hears the sound of singing waft into the street from a nearby church. Curiosity stirs up in him. He stops away from plain sight to see if his suspicion can be validated. Well, it turns out he is right; the singing is coming from a choir, and they were singing to a hallowed being they referred to as Abba Father the sovereign One. Suddenly, he remembers it's a song his late grandmother delightfully sang when she sat knitting on her rocking chair on the front porch of her home most evenings. From this day on, Derrick would come to this same spot and, in his usual manner, do everything within his power to stay hidden from the parishioners of this local assembly.

It's the eleventh day of February. Derrick has been having a long day, and the only thing on his mind is making it home. He is wearing a damaged blue jeans and a faded red T-shirt, both showing signs of overuse, and his footwear is a worn, dirt-stained sneaker. Soon his ears intercept the singing from the same small neighborhood church some 250 feet from his location on Hicks Street as the voices from the choir permeate into the streets again. This time, he gets more curious and decides to draw closer. A twin door leads into the church which they usually keep open during their services, and they are never bothered with who sees or hears them. The vim and verve with which the parishioners sing along with the choir has young Derrick taken in amazement. With all of this though, the privilege of watching and listening to them without being noticed provides some sort of escape from the vicissitudes that have been his lot in recent times, especially after the sudden death and funeral of his best friend since childhood Sean and the weird disturbing visions of seeing so many people going about with a serpent hanging on them. These visions are probably most bewildering to him because of how strangely the serpents look alike on the different people he saw having one; nonetheless, he assumes they are snake pets, pythons to be specific. Anyways, the singing eventually comes to an end, and the last few verses go like this,

All I need is You Lord, is You Lord

    All I need is You

    You hold the Universe

    You hold everyone on Earth.

Derrick continues his journey home but decides to take what he intends to be a brief detour to a park about half a mile eastward. He seats by himself on the side of the park, overlooking a public middle school on the other side. Just to his right in a court about two hundred feet away, a bunch of kids are playing basketball and calling out to each other. He is leaning forward with his hands locked between his legs. He notices an already opened green paper bag soiled with a smear of oil and an empty can of soda next to where he's seated. It doesn't interest him, so he looks away to stare into the cloudy blue skies seeking to clear his head. Suddenly his eyes see something uncanny but rather familiar to him. He sees a teenage boy standing aloof, watching his peers play a basketball game. Derrick's eyes are fixated on him, but the young lad is unaware. Almost subconsciously, he mutters his words, "Oh my goodness, what is going on? How come he has the same weird pet too? What's with this python thing nowadays?"

He bows his head in solemn reflection of his friend Sean cupping his hand over his face. He feels a whiff of wind that causes him to look up quickly. He sees the young boy walk past but without the snake. Rather, walking side by side with him is another bizarre personality. This is the first time he is seeing this personality; it seems to be shrouded in a black cloak and an extended hood over its face which makes it impossible to make out its face. It feels like seeing an animated silhouette in daylight, which is literarily gliding beside the young lad because Derrick noticed it had no feet on the ground, neither did it walk like men. They both sit on the wooden outdoor chair next to him. Derrick then notices he has his book bag with him, the sticker on it reads Colin Conray. He muses to himself, It just gets worse and worse. Who keeps a weird friend like this? What in the world is going on? His curiosity is deeply aroused now. He watches surreptitiously with the side of his eyes and prepares to eavesdrop on their conversation. Minutes pass, no word is said either by the kid or his strange companion. Suddenly, Derrick notices the strange friend lean toward the boy. Derrick's eyes dilate with a mixture of anxiety and curiosity but still hears not a sound. Careful not to be noticed, he tries to turn slightly away to the other side when, to his utter shock, he notices a similar entity seating right next to him, flanking him on the other side with what should have been its face turned toward him, but the scary thing is that Derrick couldn't see a face under the hood! Freaked out the more, he jumps up and screams, stumbling several times while running away. Amazed and embarrassed, Colin watches Derrick flee from him while trying to figure out what about him could have scared the living daylight out of the otherwise sane-looking fellow. Unfortunately, Colin never figured out the real reason why Derrick fled. He went home assuming it was because he's a white kid when, as a matter of fact, it actually had nothing to do with either of them but with a common enemy that's unlike any of them.

Monday (3 days later), 2:36 a.m., the vision

Derrick is standing at a street corner; the scene looks strange to him, but at the same time, it feels like he's been here before. The sun is high, and an assortment of passersby breeze past him in all directions. Suddenly everything else becomes insignificant, and his eyes are riveted on a boy. He is seating on a chair in front of a vast flowing river and seemingly lost in thoughts. There are two significant rows of wood, a cordon of sorts, that separates the occupants on the bridge from the river. The scene reverts in a flash. The sunlight gives way for the twilight. A familiar eerie stranger manifests and sits right next to the boy. Derrick flinches and thinks to himself, Haven't I seen this creepy figure before? Derrick then notices the stranger leans unto the side of the boy's face as though to say something to him and then withdraws to its original position. This goes on repeatedly, and the boy begins to get very distraught. Derrick is not sure why, but he is very curious to know. It feels like he is watching a movie. In a moment's time, a deliberate ray of light breaks out of the now dark skies and covers Derrick. Instantaneously he feels a sensation in his ears, and the light fades out.

Just then, to Derrick's amazement, he could now hear the boy talking mostly in expletives. To say the least, he is definitely very distraught over something. He gets up on his feet and begins to pace and the eerie companion moving in remarkable sync with the irate boy like it was his shadow. These words arouse Derrick's curiosity the more, How could Trayon embarrass you so badly when you were with Trish just because he's from a rich home and you're not? How could he? He knows she's been my friend even before he ever met her. Now she is not going to want to be with you anymore. You don't have what he has. This is not fair!

Derrick could see that the boy wasn't saying anything when he heard these words, only that the eerie stranger was leaning onto the boy's ears at that time. It still doesn't make sense yet to Derrick. As he ponders over this, he sees the boy's lips moving, and this is what he hears him saying, I was so mistaken/ I thought she wasn't like other girls. Heck, they all love the bling, bling. What will I do now? What can I do now? Oh, how I love her so much it hurts me so bad.

He stops talking and gets up like he wants to leave, but immediately, the eerie creep leans in again and Derrick hears these words, "You cannot let that repeat itself. You have become a laughingstock. Do you really think your friends are going to forget what happened? Don't be stupid! End it now, don't give Trish another opportunity to put you in this pathetic state."

Just then, an older man walks by and says to the boy, Are you all right, young man? Why are you out here by yourself?

By yourself? Derrick questions. Doesn't he see he has a creepy friend with him?

But the man walks away without waiting for a response; nonetheless, the boy responds, Thanks for your concern, sir. And for your information, I'm very comfortable being by myself out here.

Derrick is perplexed even more. But you are not by yourself. What is going on? Then the unexpected happens. The boy gets more ire and throws his hands violently into the air sideways. All this time, the eerie stranger has been on his right side just inches away from him, and his right hand literally went through the stranger like a swinging baseball bat tearing through the air without restraint! He doesn't even show any sign of hitting something or someone, and neither does the stranger react to the boy's hand! Derrick's jaw drops, and his eyes pop out as he realizes what's going on. It's some sort of evil spirit, and the boy doesn't even know it's there. Just then, the stranger leans in again, and Derrick knows it's the one talking now, You can end this misery you are in right now. Lots of people have saved themselves of unnecessary pain and despair by just leaving this crazy and unfair world. No one would be able to mock or bully you anymore. Jump into the river now. It's going to be quick and painless. All your pains and sorrows would go away instantly. Others have done it, and they are at peace now.

Things got clearer to Derrick. He thinks out loud, The creepy stranger is trying to convince the boy to commit suicide! That's what it is. It's evil! Oh my goodness, if only he knew an evil spirit is subtly projecting goading words into his mind that are mimicking and tainting his thoughts. In all this, Derrick realizes he can't interfere or help the boy in any way. He just watches with anxiety.

You know what, I think I'm going to do just that. I don't have to endure another day of being a loser. Besides, I'm never going to be with Trish anymore.

Exactly! You don't have to put yourself through that anymore. Go ahead, jump into the river now, and it would all be over. You would be free indeed, I promise you. As surreal as it looks to Derrick, the boy actually proceeds to climb over the railings. He seats on it momentarily, and the eerie evil leans in one more time.

"It's the right thing to do, Sean. No one will ever embarrass or intimidate you anymore. Jump now and bring it
