The Man in the Yellow Hat takes George to a new playground in town that is specifically designed so that kids with disabilities can play alongside their able peers. While there, George has fun with his friend Tina, who is in a wheelchair, but they come across a group of kids playing basketball who aren't sure that Tina can join in their game...This book is a modern take on the classic Curious George character and story. It took me a while to figure out why I didn't enjoy it as much as the typical Curious George story, but I finally realized it's because the story doesn't fit the usual pattern of George accidentally causing a problem due to his curiosity before finding a way to fix everything. The book comes across as a little saccharine because the only problem (Tina being able to play basketball or not) is quickly solved with a solution that is arguably over the top. (Tina and George not only play basketball with the other kids and end up joining the team, but they end up being the best players on the team, for every single game.) Still, I appreciate a well-loved character being brought into the present and the use of that character to highlight the needs of children with disabilities.
