About this ebook

Happy’s power is known. The Infinite Magic that exists within her allows her to access every element of magic, prophet magic and absolute healing, making her equally as valuable as the golden Steller Prince. She continues to attend class with the children of those who had her locked and experimented on, those who gambled for her potential through the inhumane cage. But the universe has finally given Happy the warmth of normality and a family at Rebel.

Will she be able to move past her history and debut as Lady Happy Acad of Acad House or remain the lost bastard, missing from history?

Wolf Sergeant has been abducted by the Rein group RedEye with two of the most powerful and magically-gifted children he has ever seen. But even with their affiliation to the murderous terrorist group, he cannot help but see them as the victims of a war the royals started. With an introduction to the ‘savage girl’, Ara of Ejie, they will set on a journey to save an innocent man’s life from execution and in doing so, become enemies of the state and lose everything.

But what is life without risk?

    Dedication

In 2019, my little sister, Yui (6 years old), gave this to me and said,

Look, I made Aniki! Thank you for drawing Aniki, Yui. I love you. And in the second picture, my mother and Yui drew a dragon after I told them dragons were in my book! Thank you so much, you two. And to everyone and anyone who reads my book.

    Magic History and Lesson #2

Magic is subjective and can show reluctance in some magic users. But Magic may also enjoy a magic user based on their pure and persistent hearts, offering them a bountiful amount of magic without risk of fatigue or fatality.

Magic may completely reject a magic user even if they have a strong bloodline to magic causing physical, mental and psychological afflictions if a magic user continues to try and draw their magic out. This is mostly seen in individuals who find enjoyment in inhumane activities that go against the human moral or are not worthy of the potential.

Teleportation is an individual magic ability and cannot be attained with practice. Teleportation falls under Defensive magic along with tracking, speed and defensive force fields/domes for which magic and/or weapons cannot penetrate. Red and Green ultar are used for teleportation to those who were not born with the ability and can be used depending on the journey and only by magic users.

There are three rankings of Kami: the Heavenly Kami who are blessed with heavenly magic. The Demi Kami who have been blessed or been offered a partial of a Kami’s magic; and an Earthy Kami who is able to use natural elements.

Spellstown and Sasugu obey only True Stellers with Light or Golden magic. They are called True Stellers and before the coronation of the new King, the Prince or Princess must expose the hue of their magic. Notable performances of light and/or golden magic were King Cain Steller, King Mage Steller, King Noah Steller and King Arian Steller.

Kamis are in a rank different to Levelled magic users. Magic users ranked 1-7 and Kamis cannot be compared as tiger and anaconda are not compared. Regardless, both have a larger magic store and are a lethal threat to those who come out as an enemy.

Prophetic magic has been lost after the reign of King Cain’s wife, Queen Diem. Hence, bearing prophetic magic officially puts a magic user at Level 7. It is said the last known Prophetic magic user was a soothsayer in the Ejie Tribe who cursed King Cain Steller with the unhappiness of his daughters for the massacre of her people. The curse is recited as so: Happiness from the Steller women will float out of their grasp. Like withered roses.

Thievery magic is the second rarest type of magic. It differs from Mimicking and Controlling and allows a magic user to read thoughts, manipulate the body’s function and steal an opponent’s magic ability. Thievery magic can also be used to suck the magic energy of another and render the magic user a non-magic user. This is classified as a magic rape and is forbidden on all fronts. A Thievery magic user is ranked 5 and above.

The rarest and most valuable ultar are the Thought Dream and the Great Lotus. The Great Lotus is the only Ultar in existence that is shaped as a natural organism. The Great Lotus is a pink Ultar with four green ultar around it shaped as leaves and a yellow core. The Great Lotus is rumoured to bear the ability of saving a person once from death. The last person known to have the Great Lotus was Charles Starlight who perished in a house fire in 581.

The Thought Dream is kept hidden as the responsibility of Blue Moon. The location of the Thought Dream is known only by the Blue Moon members from the year 578. The Thought Dream is a cerulean-shaded Ultar said to be the size of a 100-tonne boulder.

When magic users develop their stores and use it up, yet a threatening event occurs that the magic user feels strongly for, the magic user will reach Second State. Second State is when a magic user feels the need to be overly protective of land, themselves, a child or a valuable object. Second State allows a magic user to go into a trance in which they disregard their physical stamina and use mental stamina in order to commit an act.

Cain Steller was able to claim forces in Sasugu as a prisoner from going into Second State a month after his capture by the Sasugian Army (the Red Army). It is said that his magic as a True Steller began the moment Second State was awakened.

The Three State Logic is the last state a magic user can be in. When they no longer require magic from the air to conjure spells, illusions or any other magical form of art. Their stores replenish and are recycled inside the body, rather than using air from outside the body. Hence, the magic user will be able to use an unlimited supply of magic that will never run out in any climate, location or state of the magic user.

    1#The Blue Centipede-I’ll Erase You

    Year 580

    *8 years before present day

I assume she is ready? His tone was rough, a mixture of a command and a request; his royal and elegant demeanour was difficult to swallow. Lord Khaled, as they called him and as he liked to be called, was secretly still alive, working in the underground to keep it that way. They met in the Campian forest close to the Steller Manor where no guard was placed, where nothing but trees could hear them. The Campian forest was known as the garden of the Steller Manor and was too large to patrol. Teddy heard stories of the Steller princes playing games in the forest and from his own experience, his sister and her friends enjoyed the embraces of nature too while playing. It was Lord Khaled’s wish to always meet close to the palace and for obvious reasons, Teddy did not refuse. No matter how dangerous it was, he wanted to keep Lord Khaled happy. He must miss his home.

After his brother Mage banished him for the use of ‘dark magic’, Lord Khaled built his empire and only in 580 (74 years after Mage was crowned King), was Lord Khaled making bolder moves for the throne. He was locating more pieces of important magic, gathering the most gifted magic users and recruiting members of the Honoured and Major families with the aim to one day reclaim his birth right; the Steller throne. and turn it into SKY throne—a birth right of Lord Khaled’s. Khaled Cepheus Steller would have been his title, the star of Cepheus meant ‘King’. Lord Khaled survived old age through magical and unknown means; nonetheless, the man was 104 this year from Teddy’s recollection. His powers were indeed a dark shade of silver, but it was blasphemous of Mage to ban dark-shaded magic. Bearing dark magic did not make a magic user evil and bearing light magic did not influence good or selfless magic users.

So, whilst Mage used his power and status to boycott dark magic users, many innocents were trampled over the political ideology fostered by Mage and his followers. Lord Khaled was in the right for going against his brother and creating the Reincarnations of the Black Sun (also known as Reins). Teddy would fight for Lord Khaled and kill for him; he would go to war for him in light of Acad House. But he was not yet heir and only a 15-year-old, seeking to do right by those who were oppressed.

Is that what you tell yourself before you sleep?

Lord Khaled was still a youthful and beautiful looking man; he stood as tall as Teddy who was of stagnant height, taking after his father. Lord Khaled’s hair was iridescent black that hung over his shoulder in a long silk-like wave, his skin was pale and his eye colour was strict silver like his magic. The rumours were wrong then, Lord Khaled doesn’t even have black magic. Does anyone? It’s too rare and only told in stories and rumours.

The man looked more like a snake than the Thorns, which surprised Teddy. But Teddy was not completely a man but closer to becoming one every day. Teddy was the only legitimate son of the Honoured family: Acad House. He inherited his stepmother Marie Kane’s position in the Blue Moon council (magic users protection unit) after her death, leaving behind not only that but one of two children. Her corpse and a crying pink baby with the Acad hair. When Marie Kane was killed by Teddy’s father and his mother, Marie left behind her twin daughters that she named Happy Acad and Wendy Acad.

Wendy perished and was offered an empty grave with Marie’s tattered body in the Acad House Arcadia Gardens. Whilst Happy was taken in by Acad House and raised as Lady Acad, the bastard daughter of Tomoe Acad. As much as people hated the bastard daughter of Acad, no one could compare to Teddy’s mother and grandfather, who detested Happy. Teddy himself did not seek out his sister but she had always been quiet when she needed to be and lively when in the gaze of people.

Even though she was young, she knew her place in the world, knew she was unwanted but refused to keep it that way. Annoyingly, she studied and trained hard to win the hearts of those around her, seeking admiration and attention for what she could perform with grit. She trained day and night to become a flexible and agile warrior—something her grandfather bore an obsession for. She beat many notable warriors in her young age but still it wasn’t enough for their grandfather to applaud her. Today, Teddy would be rid of his sister, the shame of Acad House, as her father was.

Yes, My Lord. The eldest Starlight child is bringing her. She injected Happy with a sleeping tonic and will not be trouble during the journey till she reaches the Edge of Rebel. Teddy lowered his head as he spoke; this was a potential King that Teddy must respect. But at the cost of his only sibling? With no reward? It was only done for the freedom of dark magic users who had been chastised, imprisoned and killed unfairly because Mage did not want to serve as a Prince.

Mage betrayed his people and followed a path of untamed gluttony of power with his heavenly-gifted talents in light magic with the Steller hue. Teddy’s magic itself was a dark blue that had been overlooked because he was of a high status and from a prosperous military-based home that aided the Steller Monarchy. Acad House housed 3,000 in their personal army and in saying that, the current King Elias could do nothing about Teddy’s dark-shaded magic. He can try; Acad has always been stronger than Steller in terms of strength.

The two men waited for 10-year-old Lucy Starlight to bring Teddy’s drugged sister and once they caught white-blonde hair approaching, they knew she had arrived. Happy was unconscious, her arm over Lucy’s as Lucy presented herself and her best friend to Lord Khaled and Lord Acad. She offered a bow and Teddy took his sister from Lucy, cradling the 9-year-old in his arms.

Lucy was wearing a white dress with a red ribbon at the waist, made into a bow. No matter what angle you looked at it, Lucy was a child. But she had a mind well astute Teddy, perhaps well over her parents. She was strategic, calculating and manipulative. But nothing could deny her strong love for Happy and her eagerness to have the girl near her at all times. Even agreeing to go into the trials with Happy so that she was not separated from her.

Teddy looked at his sleeping sister, wanting to throw her onto the ground out of habit but he held it in from Lord Khaled. It felt like Happy was already a corpse in his arms and he wanted no part in a reminder of what he hoped the trials would do to her. Take her away, let her be with her mother and twin; she is a nuisance on earth with no purpose.

Lord Khaled and Lucy were related from the SKY family, the shunned Stellers. Lord Khaled begot three children and one of them—Yona SKY’s eldest son—was Charles Starlight, Lucy’s father. Lucy and her great-grandfather looked nothing alike; if anything, she looked more like a Steller than he did. With the iconic blonde hair and magic, Lucy kept her magic shade from Happy as to not shame her but Teddy knew very well what shade it was. She exposed it when she saw Teddy’s mother abuse Happy when she was still alive. That day, Teddy’s mother was too scared to leave her room. The ferocity of love and light magic scarred her until her death.

Happy had been born without magic and was always seen as a disgrace and late boomer to their grandfather, Major General Joseph Acad. Because the man wanted an honourable set of heirs (his son was in jail for the murder of Marie Kane), Joseph Acad only had Teddy and Happy to carry the Acad House name and tradition.

There was a second bastard from their uncle Kace and his lover Shizuka, a boy named Hatori who was a year older than Happy. But their grandfather did not even want to see Hatori, the living reminder of his son’s dishonourable life. Even though Hatori could use air (the Acad house sigil and element), their grandfather’s pride was too high to accept bastards into his heart.

Acads had governed with magic, blue magic that was shared with Mirror’s Meadow. Within the four Honoured families, each represented an element. Acad was air, Sergeants were fire, Kane was earth and Kishin was water. The heirs made sure to embed the lessons and symbol into their sigil and into their daily lives, hoping to bear children with talents in those elements. Even the Kane bastard could move the earth but the Sergeant bastard was not a magic user and the Kishin twins did not manipulate water.

Happy excelled in what she could to please their grandfather in everything, from her studies to speed and single-handed combat. She was a driven and bold child who strived to please those around her but nonetheless, it was decided by Lord Khaled who watched from afar to offer her the once in a lifetime opportunity to gain magic. He invested his sources and time into a trial made to enhance magic in a young magic user’s body and for this treatment, Happy would have to spend 3-5 years in an institution hidden from the public eye. But Teddy did not believe in such a treatment; Happy would die in the trial and that would be good for everyone. If she just disappeared.

Why did you seek me out, little one? Lord Khaled did not crouch to the child like most would. He stood straight and firm, glaring down at his great-granddaughter, the light magic user. It felt like a black snake was addressing a white tiger, both fierce in their nature but didn’t have need to be enemies. Lucy glanced at Happy who was still in Teddy’s arms and sighed. She wants to be strong, and I want the same. She will not stop pushing her body to the limits so why not aid her? Magic will help her.

And you, Lord Acad? Why would you do this to your child sister?

Teddy swallowed hard, leaning his sister’s face closer to his chest. She is an Acad… Teddy uttered, lowering his head. She is useless to the army and an embarrassment to Acad House.

Pathetic peasant, Lucy spat, her eyes glowing white. You’re sick, a reminder of cruelty.

Lord Khaled did not regard her comment, but Lucy trudged to Teddy, giving him her arms. As if she had a right over Happy. Teddy’s heart began to race and he did not want to let go; Lucy’s eyebrow arched and Teddy swallowed, taking in a breath of air. Teddy relinquished his duties as a brother and handed his sister to Lucy, but the girl did not leave without parting words. You promised she would survive the trial, Lucy said to Lord Khaled almost insolently.

But Lord Khaled did not grow angry or offended and nodded. Depending on the research given to me, she will be able to.

Lucy nodded, bowing finally as she took Happy with her into a carriage provided by Lord Khaled. Teddy fell into a kneel as Lord Khaled followed into the carriage and nothing else was said. Teddy remained in that kneeling position until he was a thousand percent sure they were all gone and he was left alone in the Campian forest. As Lord Khaled would expect loyalty from Teddy by handing over his sister to the Black Star trials; he had earned a trusted spot in Lord Khaled’s army.

Teddy returned empty-handed to Acad House where he saw his grandfather sitting in his study with the Acad exemplar Tae-Woo standing at his side. His grandfather was smoking whilst Tae-Woo was reading. Teddy sat in front of his grandfather without bowing, he didn’t want to even speak. He reached for the display-sake bottle of rum on his grandfather’s desk and as his grandfather bellowed, Teddy poured himself a glass.

    What have you done?

Tae-Woo inhaled sharply, his complexion went pale. Lady Acad… Tae-Woo said horrifyingly. It was cruel, Tae-Woo promised himself to Marie’s child, not Tomoe’s first born.

Teddy scoffed, smirking as he took a sip of the disgusting devil’s drink. I erased her. You serve me now. Now I am the only heir of Acad House.

    2#The Uncrowned Prince-

    When Spring Vanishes

    Year 576

    *8 years before present day

Aniki Saiph Steller was pronounced an orphan along with his younger sister, Maria Aquila Bisha, in the year 576. Aniki was 6 years old at the time and his sister was 3 years old when their parents died at the dinner table from food poisoning. Aniki was on his mother’s lap when she slumped to the ground; it was only a second before she was spoon-feeding Aniki the soup in front of her and suddenly, Queen Kaia Bisha was gone.

As it happened, her husband, the King Arian, started choking on his food but his hands were reaching for his wife. Aniki heard the screams of those in the room as it happened, maids wailing and soldiers rushing to the King and Queen, trying to force them to vomit what they had consumed. Aniki watched in a daze as Captain Sergeant of the Guard, his father’s best friend, laid him on the ground and rubbed his back praying that Arian would vomit out the poison. But his face had turned white and green as he choked in comparison to Kaia, who had died instantly. CALL A MEDIC! SOMEONE HELP THEM! HELP YOUR KING! Captain Sergeant bellowed. The maid feeding Maria forced her fingers down her throat so that Maria would not be poisoned and as Aniki watched, his personal maid Mio did the same.

ZANDER! ZANDER! COME ON, BOY! Elias hugged his son from the back, forcing him to vomit as well and in all that chaos, Aniki was dizzy. He could only feel the thumping of his head and heart. He looked at the corpse of his mother in her purple gown, her chestnut hair splayed on the red carpet with no blood in sight. Like death tapped her shoulder and took her soul swiftly. His father wore his white imperial clothes; the crown was not on his head when he died.

The choking was at an end and Captain Sergeant was sobbing from the loss of his friend and the death of his duty. Maria was bawling and Elias in an outrage, Zander crying along with the maids. A part of Aniki felt like he had died too and he was just watching as a humming woman but he could move his fingers, unlike his parents. In all that darkness, he shut his eyes as the tears poured out and gave in to the voice inside of him, the voice that controlled him and would not leave. A disease, a sickness of a voice that he knew was not him, but a part of him.

    You did well, Saiph.

Three days after Arian and Kaia were buried, Arian’s second brother, Elias, took the throne. Robin Steller, the third son, did not spend a moment out of his room. When Aniki asked why, his mother told him that Robin’s heart was sick and Aniki barely saw his second uncle.

King Elias Rigel Steller, the 5th King of Spellstown and Sasugu, in the year 576 took over Arian. His only son Zander Regulus was named the crowned Prince whilst Aniki and Maria soon dissolved into the forgotten royals. Captain Sergeant was discharged from his position in the Steller Manor and was requested to return to the Aqua Manse as a Colonel of the Blue Army. Elias also made it written that his wife Swara, who passed, would be known as Queen because of the love he bore for her. He honoured many temples and gardens for her and even built an orphanage in Nato City in honour of his kind-hearted wife.

In the shadows, Elias was an aggressive, insecure and envious King. Elias was copper in comparison to Arian and their father King Noah who were known for their successful and peaceful ruling. The economy was quickly declining and benefiting private armies and criminal organisations that worked in the slave and drug trade as well as human trafficking and the red-light districts. Instead of mending the problem, Elias used his nephew as a vent.

Aniki’s room was completely emptied with no furniture, bed or clothes. With sliding doors that locked him inside, Aniki was condemned to stay in his room until Elias said otherwise. Aniki laid on his tatami mats to sleep but regularly, Elias would pay visits to Aniki’s room in the middle of the night or as early as sunset to abuse Aniki into submission. To Elias it must have been a time where he could show his true colours rather than expose the Mad King that he was. A King who was so haunted by his brother and sister-in-law, or the death of his wife and their first born.

Elias told Aniki a great deal of things when Aniki was close to losing his consciousness or bleeding on the ground. Aniki studied Elias’ movements, his strikes and what made him most upset. His reason for abusing Aniki wasn’t always the same or logical; even if the King tripped, it could lead to Aniki being blamed and struck. But what made the strikes worse was if Aniki cried, made any sound or looked into his eye.

Easily seen as defiance, as rebellion, as hatred, from Aniki’s end. But 6-9-year-old Aniki didn’t hate his uncle or cousin for the abuse. He never learnt the art of hatred or the hope of vengeance. He never once thought of attacking his family members but rather believed he deserved to be punished.

When Aniki was submissive, quiet and took in Elias’ negative energy, his uncle would give a piece of himself to Aniki. Aniki would have been punched a couple of times, his face and limbs painted in bruises and his uncle would sit beside Aniki thinking Aniki had fallen asleep. Elias would pat Aniki’s chestnut brown hair, tapping his back as to mimic a mother trying to aid her babe’s sleep. But Aniki was awake and attentive to what the King needed to help him sleep.

Swara didn’t love me, she fell in love with a manservant of hers captured from Sparks and close to Ejie. That man was there for her when I was too occupied trying to gain Steller magic, trying to rival my perfect brother. Your father, Saiph, was divine in his right. No one could look at him and not fall in love; he made the sun feel shame. And I did not deserve Swara nor her love.

Elias would continue to tell Aniki his insecurities and pressures about the throne, about his nightmares. But he only did so when Aniki was unconscious or asleep. Aniki would have missed so much from his uncle when he was truly beaten half to death, that inevitably Aniki believed his Uncle apologised for the ongoing abuse and considered forgiving him.

Zander, like his father, could not produce the Steller magic, let alone magic in general. There were instances where the Major and Honoured families wanted to see Steller magic to prove Elias and his son were good enough for the crown. For prideful families like the Thorns, Markens and Acads who only obeyed strength, it was always an issue when Elias and his son were obviously not talented in single combat, weaponry, politics nor magic. It made the King and his son a joke when Aniki and Maria obviously were talented in all categories. But Elias did not dare let it show.

Elias was in his throne chair, three years after his coronation, with the heirs of Major and Honoured families gathered in the Steller Manor demanding to see Zander use magic. Zander was 8 years old and a meek boy, fragile and arrogant. But his father ordered him to expose his magic and gave him a stage to do it. Three years of gathering the best magic trainers and healers to aid Zander into bringing out his magic led close to nowhere. Even Elias was getting fed up at his son who he was sure bore Steller blood inside him.

Zander stood in the middle of the Steller Manor, taking short breaths as the heirs glared at him with their own children. Captain Sergeant with his only son, Wolf; Major General Acad with his grandchildren, Teddy and Happy; Lady Thorn with cousin Yukine and her niece Wilhelmina. The list went on until every Major and Honoured heir had presented their own child with their own talents, challenging Zander’s right to the throne.

Even Hikari Chu had been in the Steller Manor from her bloodline reaching to Lord Khaled and her talents in both magic and the military. Aniki and Maria stood almost hidden behind the golden curtains, Elias made it clear speaking about Aniki or Maria would lead to a terrible fate and thus they were faded with the background quickly.

Zander took in a deep breath, executing martial arts movements, kicking and punching the air in a routine. Trying to force the magic out of his fists or feet but every time he grunted for the magic to exit, only smoke left his skin. Not the sort of smoke that was dangerous, it felt like a mist exiting from the gaps of his fingers.

Titania Thorn clapped, in her extravagant pink dress and leopard-fur cloak. Her hands were singing with golden bracelets and her face filled with makeup that he could have been mistaken for a brothel madam. The woman was 26 years old, youthful and seductive in her aura but also a wealthy and frightening businesswoman who was growing the silk and vegetation harvest in Nato. Whilst her cousin Yukine aided with trade from the neighbouring country; Sasugu bringing in spices, rice and all that the rich Sasugian culture had to offer. Wilhelmina stood with Yukine, hiding behind her 25-year-old uncle. No matter what claim you have to the throne as the second brother of King Arian, we will not serve a man without light magic. That is how it has always been, the strong never obey the weak.

Elias rose from his throne, his body shivering in wrath. My son is a late bloomer; he is only 9 years old! Watch your mouth, Lady Thorn.

My granddaughter is 9 years old and already she has proved herself an Acad with single-handed combat, speed and academics against other heirs. She was born without magic, yet still bears the Acad strength, Joseph Acad said the words and immediately a ray of light came across his granddaughter who stood strong next to her older brother. Aniki had never seen a smile so appreciative and pure.

Are you comparing my son to a bastard non-magic user! the King bellowed, smashing a fist on the chair hand. The Major family heirs stood quiet, there were no words from the graceful heirs who already knew that Elias was not fit for the seat his brother and father were born for. But Captain Sergeant did step up, his young son behind him. We question tradition when a better alternative arrives, my King. Does Zander have talents other than magic that would serve this country? If not, soon we will lose Sasugu as well.

Elias was breathing hardly as his son was crying in the presence of all the heirs and soldiers. Elias knew that his son was only a copy of himself and thus he would watch his fall twice. But an alternative had been offered by Reins he had arrested months ago who spoke about the mimicking and thievery of other magic users and transferring the magic into a selected magic user. The side effects would be cruel and harsh but Elias was cornered.

Elias glanced at Aniki and Maria whose eyes were on Zander, the little Maria rushed to Zander and handed him a napkin to conceal his tears. He snatched the napkin off his cousin and Maria ran back to her brother’s side holding his hand. Give my son a year and if he does not produce Steller magic, I will abdicate my throne to the strongest and noblest of the Major or Honoured family heirs. I swear it by the heavens. Elias hit his fist on the sigil at his breast, the golden crown on his head. The generals and heirs mimicked his action and all bowed. After which they left Steller Manor and Aniki remained below his King, knowing what was going to happen.

When the Steller Manor was rid of the guests, Elias demanded Maria be taken to her room. Aniki closed his eyes and Maria cried from being forced away from her brother but her cries became silent once Elias dragged Aniki to his room by his nape. Elias threw Aniki to the ground with Zander trailing after him, his tears halt and his eyes widened. You make a mockery out of my son!

Aniki shook his head as Elias punched Aniki’s head down, grasping his scalp he struck Aniki’s face again until Zander began to scream-cry for his father to stop. HE IS GOING TO TAKE YOUR PLACE AS KING REGULUS! Elias yelled, holding his son’s shoulders. YOU HAVE TO CONTROL HIM! KEEP HIM QUIET AND FORGOTTEN!

Never, Zander is my cousin! I won’t take anything from him— Elias backhanded Aniki and what became a breaking point for Elias turned into pain at Aniki’s expense. Zander stopped crying but watched the monster that was his father show his true self, his true anger, at a boy only a year older than Zander.

Aniki opened his eyes when his door slid open, his room was without Elias and Zander. Aniki could tell because their magic was nowhere close to his room, he couldn’t smell it nor could he feel it. No one with magic was anywhere around him. Although they had the magic inside him, the magic would not show. Aniki was trying to open his left eye but it refused to open. The numbness of it made Aniki not even bother touching it. The tatami mat was splattered lightly with Aniki’s blood and the 9-year-old boy sighed.

Wolf, we shouldn’t be in here! Aniki glanced up at the sliding door and caught the eyes of two boys who were a little taller than him. One with shepherd brown hair staring at him with widened eyes and a second boy who didn’t know what Wolf was looking at. Wolf entered the room, bringing in his friend as he slid the door closed. Wolf rushed to Aniki, his face flushed red. Are you okay? Do you want me to bring the maids to help you?

Aniki shook his head as the two boys spoke to him. Did they know who he was?

Why not! Did you fall or something? the second boy asked. Aniki nodded but Wolf did not seem convinced. I saw you and your sister hiding in the blind spot. My father told me you were King Arian and Queen Kaia’s son. My name is Wolf Sergeant of the Aqua Manse. This is my friend, Harrison Liece. Wolf offered his hand to Aniki and for the first time, Aniki wanted to break into tears like Elias did so often.

Aniki looked at Wolf’s hand and offered it, lowering his head as he shook it. My name is Aniki.

Don’t be scared, how old are you, Aniki?

Aniki swallowed, Harrison flashed a smile and Aniki couldn’t help but do the same. 9.

I’m 9 too! Harrison put a hand up for Aniki to hit but Aniki cringed his eyes shut, shielding his head.

Ah no, I wasn’t going to hit you. Harrison retracted his hand back, looking to Wolf for help.

I’m 10. We won’t hit you, friends don’t do that, Wolf vowed, putting a hand on Aniki’s shoulder. Aniki prayed it were true for even a moment. The two boys smiled at him and Aniki didn’t know what else to do or say. He had never seen anyone offer him friendship or speak to him. Mio only spoke to herself and Elias forbade Aniki and Maria from seeing each other unless they were in a soiree or another public event.

You two should go. The King will be angry if he finds you here.

Wolf stood up and Harrison followed. My father brings me and Harrison here a lot because we’re going to train to serve the King and the Prince. When we have free time, we will come and play with you, you can learn to protect yourself as well.

Yea! I’m going to be Captain of the Guard and Wolf is going to be a General like his father! Harrison cheered.

Aniki rubbed his hair, raising his head to Wolf and Harrison. Captain Sergeant is a Colonel.

Wolf grinned, giving a hand for Aniki to stand up. Aniki took it, his legs shaking as he rose. My father served your father as a General. And my father taught me the Sergeant words.

Steller words are ‘Blood, peace, purity.’ So lucky…Lieces don’t have words, Harrison pouted, crossing his arms.

Elias glanced at Aniki and Maria whose eyes were on Zander, the little Maria rushed to Zander and handed him a napkin to conceal his tears. Yet, Aniki said optimistically. There was an awkward silence between the three boys until Harrison chuckled.

I don’t know how the Liece words would go, we aren’t good at much. Harrison scratched his head but Aniki reached to his hand. We can come up with it together!

Utmost Loyalty are the Aqua Manse words, Wolf said; Aniki and Harrison glanced at the boy as he stood tall. Aniki could already feel Wolf mimicking his father’s loyal and stone-like aura. The Sergeants represent fire and no one can rid us of it, Aniki’s father had told him.

But don’t Stellers use gold magic? I can use fire too. Aniki held his palm out and his eyes didn’t have to glow for a small spark of fire to appear on his hands. He looked up at his father and expected to see surprise, but his father closed Aniki’s hand and pecked his forehead. Sergeants are a friend to the throne, to me and you, like Acad and Kane were to King Cain. You must protect and love them. I will show you Yori’s son soon, he is only a year older. Arian flashed a smile and Aniki became sensitive to Captain Sergeant’s presence. Maria relayed to Aniki that Captain Sergeant begged to keep Aniki and Maria in the Aqua Manse but his request was denied and that was why he was sent back to Sparks.

Aniki could see no difference between Wolf and his father, both were raised in an environment filled with hope, strength and loyalty. Even so, Aniki was frightened that Wolf’s fire would outshine him.

My father and I serve you before we serve King Elias and Prince Zander. Wolf fell into a kneel and looked up at Aniki. Harrison shifted his gaze from Wolf to Aniki and then fell into a kneel as well. We serve you, Aniki, as the Uncrowned Prince.

Aniki’s eyes began to glow vermillion, around him golden fireflies appeared as if to bestow a blessing on Wolf and Harrison. "And I will protect you as King of the Beasts."

    3#A Steller’s Trust

    Present Day, 587

Kill him now. Kill him now. Kill him and Rogue will be safe, his soul will be restored.

Happy raised the dagger overhead, until she could see a clear shot of King Zander’s nape. His guards were careless; the shot was so clear she could have even killed him with a slingshot and rock. The voice was loud, thumping with her every heartbeat, her eyes widened and she waited a second for the heavens to stop her from murdering the boy who stood yards away. He was the face of the Stellers, the King and heir with dirty blonde hair—not like Mage. Rogue, I promised to retrieve your soul. No matter what I have to do, before I die, before this illness kills me… Happy’s cyan magic played with the blade, sharpening it before she let it fly. And when she set it off, only then did she exhale.

Happy, Aniki rasped, grabbing her by the nape, she felt something cold and sharp placed at her neck, her eyes had been on the dagger and the speed of which it was going to reach the King. But a spray of light magic acted like a shield, swallowing the dagger until only a wisp of air flew past Zander’s hair. Happy grit her teeth—Ra!

I don’t think so— The words came out as blood began to spill. Happy’s eyes were on Ra in his ethereal form, beautiful green eyes, stared back at her; snow-white hair falling over his face with shame. Aniki sent him as a protector of his cousin whilst Aniki pointed a blade at her neck. Aniki brought the blade down, his hand slipping down to her waist as he held her closer to him.

"Rogue—" Happy choked out the words but Zander was already out of her sight. She could not beat Ra in a fight with Aniki as the end boss, she swallowed hard feeling the despair that rushed to her. Blood was slowly trickling down her neck, from her collar bone and chest. How easily did saving him slip away from her fingers?

Happy, killing Zander will not bring back Rogue’s soul. You’ve been fooled, Aniki’s grip on Happy loosened. Although he was only behind her, the small pleasure he had with such an intimate stance clouded his test. Happy was a danger to Zander but not as much as he thought, because Happy herself was hesitating. Happy’s knees buckled and she fell to the ground, only now noticing Aniki’s magic in an invisible sheen around her. He was protecting my movements so that no one could see.

Happy, let’s get out of here, Aniki ushered, giving his hand to her. She felt an upcoming aura rush to her, but was reluctant to share her embarrassment with anyone else and gave in to Aniki’s request.

Happy! Gray yelled, trying to reach her before Aniki and Happy teleported away. Once the light disappeared, Gray cursed, kicking the ground like a child. Seven hells! Did Aniki know his cousin would be here too?

Gray ruffled his hair, distraught. But then a more important notion crossed his mind. Aniki wasn’t holding an ultar when he teleported…

Once Happy took his hand, she felt the golden magic warm her up as they teleported from the water land back to Rebel Academy. Aniki teleported her effortlessly back to her room where she appeared on the cold floor. Aniki sat on the ground with Happy, his hands on her shoulders. This aura around her is confining, like she has finally let the pain enter her heart. Aniki rose from the ground, knowing himself that cuddling her like a child would not help. Happy was someone who turned her pain into rage and that was how she’d always coped. Get up.

Happy sniffled lightly; she peered up at Aniki and scowled as she rose. You! Happy raised a closed fist to Aniki but he did not dodge and nor did she attack. Was that a test? Did you know he would be there? He’s your cousin of course, you knew!

I needed to know what purpose you served, whether my cousin being a Steller automatically made him your enemy. It was more than that you were going to kill him without speaking to him. You’re only an assassin.

Happy was hit by the words, but she was very well aware what Aniki said except without the voice of Mage telling her so. ‘Experiment of the Rhingal,’ he called her.

Happy calmed herself, lowering her gaze. She could have been killed from her intention but Aniki stopped her. That accounted for something, maybe he could still trust in her true intentions.

I only want Mage, to know if he is alive and destroy him if he is. Zander is not my enemy…not yet.

Happy held her head and saw the flash of a smile on Aniki. She swallowed, knowing he had taken vulnerability off her and now she owed him. I won’t attack you and Zander unless the people I care about are threatened.

Aniki rubbed the back of his head, almost frowning. I don’t care about Zander. But he is the King and you shouldn’t attack someone that could lead to your death and torture. I brought you to this school for your safety, do not forget it.

Happy nodded, clenching her fists. I am still a Rein and thus half a citizen. I could be arrested any minute regardless of my…actions… Happy felt exhaustion sway at her and held her head, Aniki approached her, holding her hands as he led her to the bed. I needed to suck in a little of the magic around you to stop you, you’ll sleep for a few hours, Aniki whispered laying her on the bed.

Happy was panicking but lacked the energy to do so; her hands tightened around Aniki as her eyes widened. B—But you had a knife at my throat.

Aniki scoffed, lightly lowering her head to the pillow. That isn’t enough to stop you, we both know that.

Happy’s exhaustion took over and she quickly fell asleep, like a baby she slept on her back breathing lightly and slow. Aniki watched Happy for a few more moments longer than he should have, paying attention to the young girl when she was quiet and not ready to bark. As she inhaled, Aniki could see the magic enter back into her body through her mouth. Microscopic cyanic particles were sucked into her every breath, fireflies in the moonlight.

Aniki covered her shoulder with her quilt and left her bedroom, sighing in relief. She had the same episode I did 11 years ago. Luckily for her, she didn’t act on it, lucky for her I was here. Aniki leaned on Happy’s bedroom door, crossing his arms. Even now he felt the evil inside him move, like he had swallowed a worm, which refused to leave. I wish there had been someone to stop me. But no one answered and Aniki treaded away from Happy’s room. Gold particles lightly danced around him as he left through the dark halls of Rebel Academy.

Happy was covered in her quilt, snuggled tight in her linen-scented room. Her lucid dream began to consume her in the comfort and quiet of her room. Happy had known years of sleeping on the ground, sand, mountain side and off the road but only recently had she been able to sleep on a bed without complaint. But still it felt wrong for her to have such a blessing when so many others were still on the wet ground. Happy opened her eyes before the dawn, grinning as she hugged her pillow. Kaya the Boar, I order you out.

Cyanic and brown magic mixed lightly under the darkness and Happy stuck her feet out of the bed, standing up in her nightrobe as the Zodiac spirit appeared in a kneel, her fist on the ground and her eyes lowered. Kaya was loyal, fierce and a woman without question. She was built beautifully with large muscles, her hair cut short and even above her shoulders. Her skin was warm toned, brown like those in Saniti Islands. Kaya was mostly known for her strength amongst the other Zodiacs.

I need you to help me hold this bed. I’ll pack the sheets, quilt and pillows in a larger bag. Happy searched in her closet for a bag but she heard rustling; peering back, Kaya had gone below the bed, placing her palms above her, she lifted the bed in one heave. Or we can do that; want to use the window or the door?

Kaya smirked, looking to the window. Happy smiled back licking her lips as she ran towards it, sliding the window seal up as she jumped off. She felt the gush of the summer air hit her face as she crashed to the grounds of Yui Garden. She looked up at the sky and witnessed the spread of the stars but a moment later, Kaya jumped out of the window still carrying the bed as she landed.

Happy and Kaya fist bumped, chuckling from the thrill until Happy started to lead Kaya out of Rebel Academy.

    Where are we taking this?

Happy peered back at Kaya and flashed a grin, her hair the exact tone of the night. We’re going to donate it to the orphanage.

Happy and Kaya offered the bed in donation to an orphanage not too far from Rebel Academy, the bed went to two little girls who thanked Happy and Kaya graciously with rosy cheeks and toys to their side. Happy wished she had the luxury of offering more than that to the kids but vowed to visit regular and volunteer when she was not training or in class. Happy also offered Kaya a large feast for breakfast but Kaya respectfully declined, disappearing back to where to Zodiac lived. Happy wasn’t allowed to ask where the Zodiac went when they weren’t called on for, nor could she ask why they came in the form they did. Most of the Zodiac choose human forms matching their personality and respective colours but some remained in their animal forms, including Kana the Dog and Ryu the Dragon.

Happy entered back into Rebel Academy catching the scowls from the guards, she tied her hair up ready to make breakfast before she began her morning drill but sensed a leering aura that forced her to sigh. What are you doing here? Why did you leave Hikari sensei and the rest?

Gray was half asleep in the empty cafeteria, the cooks had been given a break in the holidays and Happy could finally cook for herself without the cooks slamming her with taunts. Gray wore casual clothing, slapping his cheeks awake. Morning sunshine, I go where you go… Gray stretched as he yawned, rolling his shoulders. What happened with you?

Happy entered the kitchen wearing a spare apron as she searched for eggs and bread. You saw, didn’t you?

Gray avoided the question, pretending to play with the utensils. Where did you go after Black Star if you didn’t return to Acad House? Gray scoffed at the thought. You could have gone home and become rich, instead you wear shoes with holes and sleep on the ground.

    You saw my room?

Where did you think I went first! Where did you put your bed? Gray barked.

I didn’t go home because I’m a bastard, because I knew I’d be a danger to the men and my family. Happy broke open four eggs, stirring it after she washed one tomato and skinned an onion. Once she whisked the eggs, she began to dice the tomato and onions whilst Gray sat on the table playing with the kitchen knives.

You spent three years on the streets then. I doubt those fuckers— Happy shot Gray a scowl. I doubt those men taught you how to fight as well, and you’re only a girl. Where did you learn?

Happy smiled at the thought of it, how her life had been for three years as a nomad and learning the various cultures of Spellstown. I escaped in 584 when I was 11 in 583. I crossed paths with the Ejie Tribe in Sparks and learnt their method of defence, cooking and their faith. I stayed for less than a year and— Happy stopped cutting, feeling the stab in her heart.

    And?

It was the greatest moment of my life. I felt like I belonged there and they accepted me so warmly; I didn’t think I deserved it. I ran away after learning the language and never thanked them for anything. Happy swallowed as she began to fry the onions and tomatoes. Gray only watched her, even he couldn’t say something to hurt her at a point like this. At the point where she remembered being happy. I found the Omnibus Library the year after that—584. I had no idea what it was, I was starved, fatigued and almost dying. There was a note I could read on the ground saying my name and once I said it, they accepted my refuge in exchange for a test.

Wait wait, the Omnibus Library? The one that no one knows about? The one that has the Black Brother’s Collection of Spells and practically every single book in record? The one that only accepts Owls!

Happy nodded, flashing a smile. You know about it?

They would have the best comics! Take me there!

Happy wanted to smack Gray but sighed in response. I’m sworn to secrecy; they place a spell on you so you can’t tell others of the location. And either way, they don’t let just anyone into the Library; you need to pass the test.

Gray shrugged, showing disinterest. Happy stirred the caramelized vegetables and added the stirred eggs to the pan, stirring it so the eggs, tomatoes and onions became scrambled. I stayed there for a year as service required and got the status of an Owl. Afterwards, I learnt about the Zodiac and spirits so I travelled back to Rebel and climbed Yuki Mountain to meet a mountain Spirit named Kova. The year after that I started travelling again on foot, meeting Rein Groups around Sparks mostly and eventually I spent the summer and spring of 585 in Saniti Islands. The language is similar to that of Ejie but more rasp. It was easier for me to communicate in nods than in their tongue.

Gray’s mouth soured as Happy placed the scrambled eggs on a plate where she laid two pieces of bread. When I went to Saniti Islands they speared me back into the ocean… Gray said as if to keep himself in the conversation.

They keep their own mostly. A moody folk, I was lucky to catch them on a good day. But the training is rough, they’d make me run a 10-mile hike up a mountain as warm up before starting initial practices.

Morning. Aniki glided into the room holding a plate out as Happy spread the eggs in front of her and Gray. Happy hadn’t made enough for a third person and handed him half of her toast. So, weapons from Ejie, academics from the Omnibus, martial arts from Saniti. Where did you learn to cook?

Happy and Gray stared at Aniki and felt the awkwardness of a Steller trying to bond over Rein discussion. No matter how much Happy hated to discriminate, it came out naturally when she was with Aniki. Ejie.

I would have loved to be taught by the Three Ancient Cities, it’s a shame you missed out on Descendai.

Happy nodded, sliding into her seat as she began to eat her toast. Are you feeling uncomfortable because my great-great-grandfather killed—

Massacred, Gray coughed, Aniki shot a glare at Gray and then glanced back at Happy.

—the Ejie and Saniti people? Yes, thank you, Gray.

Happy forced a grin, shaking her head. They are forgiving deep down. In Ejie there’s a prophecy that a Steller monarch will bring them justice, prosperity and fortune. But Saniti are more close-minded, they don’t just discriminate against Stellers but anyone who is not one of them.

Speaking of more important things, aren’t you going to return to Acad House? It’s been a year and we have all kept your identity secret but your brother and grandfather—

Happy picked up her plate and crashed it on the table. Mind your own.

    Happy—

The Golden Prince is very talkative today, Gray said in a low tone.

Aniki and Gray stared at each other threateningly but Happy went to Gray’s side, putting a hand on his shoulder. Let’s go, Gray.

I’m only trying to help. Don’t you want to return to your family? You spent all these years away from them out of shame—

Happy strutted to Aniki, grasping his collar. She pushed him to the kitchen bench, sneering at the sight of him. Don’t tempt me, Aniki. Keep away from our business and we will do the same with yours. Don’t breathe a word about Acad House, the others still don’t know and I want to keep it that way.

Aniki swallowed hard, his brown eyes lingering on her blue ones. He lightly pushed Happy off him and left the kitchen, thanking her for breakfast. Gray walked over to Happy as she stared at the door he left from, she hated to be challenged and more so hated to be in the wrong. But there was too much context, her half-brother’s mother beating Happy relentlessly just for breathing. Her grandfather demanded the best out of her, more than Teddy because Happy was a love child. One born of lust and scandal. No one wanted her, no one needed her and as much as she loved them; it ached her heart to love people so evil and cruel to a child that was not theirs. And they were her father’s family; the closest Happy had to a maternal parentage were the Three Ancient Cities and the Kanes. But her stepmother was a Kane and Happy did not want any part of that woman inside her heart.

Zander’s coronation is this week. He’s going to return to the Steller Manor, Gray announced like it was a report.

Happy glanced at him and scowled. What are you going to do? Spy on him and sell information? I may hate him but you will not hurt him.

Gray ruffled Happy’s hair, making a mess of the long blue-black curls. Relax, your boyfriend is safe. But what we can do is find out why Elias has abdicated the throne after ruling for such a short time.

Happy was also dying of curiosity at why a King would leave his throne, although he was incapable and ill-prepared for the role. The saying goes: the best way to know a man—

    "—Is to enter his den."

Oh, I was going to say sleep with—,

Happy scowled and Gray cocked his head. Enter his den it is.

    4#The Roe Deer-Playing at Authority

Yukio had packed a small bag of clothes and weapons when returning home for the holidays. A carriage came for her with four guards, two riders and two horses. With wordless greetings, she entered the carriage reading a collection of reports from her men, letters about their progress, training and things they wished would improve on. Yukio had longed to see her people at
