    Prologue

The stars are so far away people cannot tell much about them without excellent instruments. People didn’t realize that the stars were beings with awareness of and were responsive to their surroundings. These beings are known as Starlights.

For eons, these Starlights have inhabited the sky. A Starlight has many stages of life, but through the cycle of the supernova, they are reborn. The process is dangerous, and not all survive. Those that do are sent hurtling through space to experience new life on the planets below.

In a race against time, each Starlight has only twelve full moons to find true love. Each Starlight’s magic and life are blessed with unique gifts, dependent upon forming a loving bond with an inhabitant of the planet below. If they fail, their light will forever fade.

Unbeknownst to these fallen stars, sinister beings lurk in the shadows. Known as Umbras, these dark ones seek to claim the star’s radiance for their own.

Vega loved to look down on Earth. She hoped that when she had her supernova that she would crash there. She did not and could not count the passing of time: a week was only some days to her, and six years only many years; but she waited, watching the passage of time, vaguely but continuously, for the day when she would have her supernova.

The Northern Star, Vega, was first spotted in Egypt by vampires and wepwawets in 1200. Wepwawets were the first wolf shifters. Each species knew that the Starlight Vega would crash on Earth one day.

The Badru wepwawet pack elders studied the prophecy when the Northern Star was first noticed.

The star Vega will crash into our world when it reaches the time for the supernova. At this time, the star will be turned into a female searching for her mate. Whomever mates with Vega will gain powers over the universe, the elders declared.

The Khaldun vampire nest’s eldest sire had a different interpretation of the prophecy.

The Northern Star is a female being who will come to our planet during the supernova. Whoever finds her will be deemed worthy of mating with her and will receive powerful gifts for the entire nest. We must ensure that our nest is the one that finds Vega, the eldest sire declared. If we fail, the wepwawets will sacrifice her to the moon god.

When Vega left the north pole in 1259, it started a war between the Khaldun vampire nest and Badru wepwawets pack. Each was blamed the other for the star leaving.

Tarak Khaldun was born into the Egyptian nest in June 1506. His family followed the stars in hopes of finding Vega again. His family moved to Greece in 1560 in hopes of finding the Starlight. They joined the Chisisi nest for protection in the new country. The Khaldun nest lost a lot of vampires during the Egyptian war.

In 1569, Vega was spotted by vrykolakas (vampires) and lukánthrōpos (wolf shifters) in the sky over Greece. The Greek revolt of 1569–1572 was a series of conflicts between vrykolakas rebels and the lukánthrōpos in the region. Zeke Chisisi fought beside his older cousin, Tarak Khaldun, against the Badru lukánthrōpos pack. The vampires were able to force the wolf shifters out of Greece and into Germany.

In Germany, both the lycanthropes and nachzehrer realized that their Ancient Egyptian ancestors misinterpreted the prophecy. Sirius and Sterling Badru were the twin alphas born in Germany in 1590.

The alpha twins are the destined mates for the Northern Star, Vega. Together they will protect the Earth. The nachzehrer will destroy Vega when they try to mate with her. We must prevent that, or all will be lost, the Badru pack elders said.

Our Ancient Egyptian sires misinterpreted the prophecy. The lycanthropes will kill Vega when they try to mate with her. She will not survive the mating change. We must prevent that, or all will be lost, The Chisisi and Khaldun elder sires declared.

Vega was next spotted by lycanthropes (wolf shifters) and nachzehrer (vampires) over Germany in 1618, starting the Thirty Years’ War (1618–48). Many vampires and wolf shifters lost their lives.

Vega was spotted again in America at the end of the Revolutionary War. Sirius and Sterling Badru were spotted on a ship coming from Germany within months of the star being spotted. Zeke and Tarak had their own boat, which left a month before the wolf shifters.

Keeping their distance from Sirius and Sterling, Tarak and Zeke followed sightings of the Northern Star in Ohio in 1843, Pittsburg in 1859, Nebraska in 1886, and New York in 1897.

In 1913, the Summer Triangle was discovered. Vega forms the Summer Triangle with Deneb in Delphinus and Altair in Aquila.

Vega was spotted again in Michigan in 1927 and then in California in 1934.

The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California, opened in May 1935.

On the seventh day of the seventh month in 1942.

Vega, it’s time. Deneb and I can feel the pull to Earth. We will be joining a female on the planet to be her destined star-mates, Altair said excitedly.

That’s wonderful! I will miss you both terribly, Vega replied right before Deneb and Altair reached their supernova and crashed to Earth. Good luck!

Vega watched Deneb and Altair as they searched for their mate. War raged on the planet again. Vega could see and hear what was happening below, but she could not interfere in any way. The war made it difficult for her friends to find their destined star-mate.

As the end of the year approached, Vega began to worry for Deneb and Altair. If they couldn’t find their destined star-mate and complete the bond, they would turn into Umbra.

    July 7, 1943.

Vega looked down upon the Earth, searching for Deneb and Altair. She cried when she spotted them. They shouted to the heavens in grief as they began to transform. Their golden hair faded to black. Their eyes began to burn red and their skin turned ashen. Deneb and Altair failed to find their destined star-mate and transformed into Umber.

Vega was grief stricken and vowed to never look upon Earth again until it was time for her supernova.

Sirius and Sterling began working at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles in hopes of finding Vega again. Tarak and Zeke left the observatory in Philadelphia and headed to the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, where they would work the night shift.

Wolf shifters and vampires still battled each other throughout the planet. Sirius and Sterling still had fights with Tarak and Zeke, but they soon gave up trying to kill each other.

In 2020, Sirius and Sterling were surprised to be visited by their grandfather, who was one of the Badru pack elders. What was more surprising was that they arrived with Tarak, Zeke, and their elder sire.

We have news. Come, commanded the elders.

The four men followed their elders to the Griffith Park Observatory Trails Peak. The sun had recently set. The night sky was always a welcome sight, the stars appearing like magic at each sunset, promising to return as the moon faded in dawn’s first light.

    Sit.

The men looked around, then at each other, confusion evident on their faces before sitting. The elders then sat.

Alpha Badru speaks for the vampires as well. It’s best to listen, Tarak and Zeke, the elder sire said as he too sat.

Thank you, Cygnus, Alpha Badru replied. Tarak and Zeke, my name is Arcturus.

    Tarak and Zeke nodded.

I know that you four know of the ancient prophecy. There had been misinterpretations over the centuries. Things are beginning to happen, signaling the supernova of Vega is fast approaching, Arcturus began. Cygnus and I came together for the good of our people when we discovered that the prophecy is not as it had been explained back in Germany in the 1600s.

What do you mean, Grandfather? Sirius interrupted.

Hush, Sirius. You may be the eldest alpha twin, but I will still take a belt to your behind if you don’t watch your manners, Arcturus chastised.

I’m sorry, Grandfather, Sirius said as he bowed his head.

As I was saying, there are some misunderstandings. The prophecy will unite the wolf shifters and vampires and end the centuries of bloodshed because the four of you are Vega’s destined star-mates, Arcturus explained.

What? That can’t be true. How is this possible? Zeke turned to his sire, Cygnus.

In Egypt, when the prophecy was discovered, the elders of both races chose to ignore the facts that we would all benefit from the mating of the Northern Star. Each side wanted the powers for their own, Cygnus explained.

Are you telling us that wolf shifters and vampires have been killing each other for 761 years for nothing but greed? Tarak asked.

I’m afraid so, Cygnus replied sadly.

    There is more, Arcturus said.

What more could there possibly be? Sterling asked.

During World War II, Deneb and Altair from the Summer Triangle had their supernova and fell to Earth. They never found their destined star-mate in the years’ time frame and turned into Umbra. We are afraid that they will be after Vega’s light force when she crashes. Her life will be in danger until she completes the mating with the four of you. Arcturus explained.

Vega must fall in love with all four of you. You can’t force the mating. If she does not fall in love of her own free will, she will become an Umbra. We believe she knows that Deneb and Altair were turned into Umbra, and that is why no one has seen her since 1943, Cygnus added.

Do you know when she will supernova? Tarak asked.

Do you know where she will land? Sirius asked.

No, I’m afraid we do not know either of those answers, Arcturus answered.

The signs indicate that she will crash sometime within this decade, Cygnus added.

We suggest that the four of you work in shifts monitoring the stars. In the summer months, Vega is closest to the Earth, so we assume that would likely be when she would have her supernova, Arcturus said.

You need to put your fighting and sabotaging each other aside to find her. She has witnessed enough war and killing. Remember, you will have twelve moons from the time Vega crashes to make her fall in love with all four of you and complete the mating. If not, she will turn into an Umbra, and the world of shifters and vampires will be lost, Cygnus said.

Cygnus and Arcturus rose and left without another word. Neither glanced back at the men they left behind.

I can’t believe this, Sirius said.

What can’t you believe? Do you doubt our sire? Zeke growled.

No, no. That’s not it. It’s just that it’s so much to absorb, Sirius explained.

All of our lives, we have been told that the other side was dangerous to Vega. We’ve been at war for centuries, and they expect us to stop at the drop of a hat? Tarak said.

Let’s take some time to think on it and then meet up to talk things out and come up with a plan. They said Vega will supernova this decade. That doesn’t leave us a lot of room to plan, Sterling said.

Agreed, the voices of everyone echoed around them.

One week. We will meet here again at sunset in one week, Tarak said, then, he rose and gestured for Zeke to follow him.

Sirius and Sterling watched the vampires leave.

This is going to be a long week, Sterling said as he rose to head back to their home.

It sure is, Sirius replied as he too stood and headed home.

    June 2022

Through the inky black came a blaze of brilliant blue, moving through the sky as the North Star, Vega, reached her supernova. Tarak watched it, eyes wide and mouth agape.

Zeke, call the shifters; Vega is crashing, Tarak called out as he watched the direction the supernova was headed.

Tarak heard Zeke run to his desk and pick up his cell phone.

Sterling, Vega has reached her supernova. Yes, I’m sure. Tarak is watching to see where she lands. Hurry.

    Chapter 1

The sun had not risen when Vega woke and sat upright. The moon shone clear and bright through a canopy of trees. She looked down at her body, noticing a pretty pair of thin pale legs and small feet, but she had no clothes. She had long blonde hair that hung down her front, landing on her lap.

It was night; Vega was naked, alone, and hungry; yet she was not afraid. She was glad it was warm wherever here was. It might take her some time to find clothing. She last saw the planet Earth during World War II. She learned that people wore clothing.

Vega trembled and gazed around her as if she had awoken from a frightful dream. She noticed that she was entirely surrounded by foliage. She must be in a forest. She stood up, staggered on her new legs, and promptly fell on her ass. Damn, that hurt! She had never felt pain before.

Vega stood again and tried to walk. She took a few tentative steps, staggered a little, but she didn’t fall this time. She smiled to herself. The dense ceiling of the leaves and branches of trees formed the canopy all around her. Surrounding her was a variety of shrubby plants, tree saplings, vines, and tree seedlings. The forest was alive with the sounds of many nocturnal animals. She looked down often as she walked, hoping not to hurt her feet.

Vega thought about using some leaves and vines to make something to cover her body, but she didn’t know what plants were poisonous, like poison oak and poison ivy. She didn’t want to risk it. Hopefully, there
