    Dan’s sister, Roberta, lifted her gaze from her book. She was lying on the grass, basking in the tepid Saturday morning sun. She had been reading a romantic story and had just gotten to the point where the heroine reveals to her friend, who she’s in love with. Her annoyance at the interruption was considerable.

    Bobbie was twelve years old. She was graceful, though not beautiful, and with every day that passed, she reminded her father more of her mother. Bobbie and her brother had become very close since their mother’s death, less than a year before, and seldom quarreled, even under severe provocation. Four years her junior, Dan knew that Bobbie loved him and sometimes took advantage of her patience.

    Go away, ugly, said Bobbie, but didn’t go back to reading.

    Bobbie, come please. I’ve got something to show you.

    Not now, pest. Come back later.

    No, Bobbie. Really. You must see this. Dan was panting and was obviously worked up about something.
