The first book I wrote received an imprimatur from the Archdiocese of New Orleans to be advertised in its newspaper, Clarion Herald . I tried to bring the message about my first book to the Sunshine state. The eight-diocese (Church district) state has a statewide publication called the Florida Catholic . This publication requires a three-quarter majority to receive the statewide imprimatur.

My complexion was darker than most people’s, and even in Miami, I was confused with being Hispanic but especially up north. My ethnicity and race were frequently questioned by bigots. I was too Catholic, independent thinking, tolerant, indifferent, casual, and ethnic-looking. Although I fit in fairly well with the class of 1975, this community was not a good match. I was too much
