Władysław Reymont (1867-1925) is vooral bekend vanwege zijn grootse epos over het leven op het Poolse platteland, de vierdelige roman De boeren, waarvoor hem in 1924 de Nobelprijs voor literatuur werd toegekend. Kort voor zijn dood schreef hij als waarschuwing voor de gevolgen van de bolsjewistische revolutie de allegorische vertelling Opstand, over dieren die rebelleren tegen de tirannie van de mens. Dit werk, allang in de vergetelheid geraakt en nu aangeboden in een nieuwe Nederlandse vertaling, wordt wel beschouwd als een voorloper van George Orwells Animal Farm.
