However, after their neighbor's block of flats is bombed by a Russian missile, and Sveta makes a gruesome discovery, her tiny safe world suddenly gets turned upside down. Her father immediately decides that the time has come for Sveta, her mother and small brother to leave and travel by train, to a safer nearby country until the war is over. The story follows Sveta's adventures both literal and spiritual on their long journey, to eventually cross the border into Poland and start a new life.

FOREWORD

As a mum of two teenagers, I was delighted to discover the book Fleeing the Russians!. The story is raw, real and fast paced so should easily grab and keep the attention of its young readers. The characters were so real and I kept feeling all their emotions.

Because it deals factually with the present war in Ukraine, all at once the reader is often shocked, aching for the Ukrainian suffering, but also suddenly very appreciative of our safe and peaceful life in the West.

I also loved the fact that while Sveta was making all those challenging train journeys, she was also on a spiritual journey to find a powerful relationship with Jesus as her Lord and Savior, to guide her way.

My son Jayden, also loved the illustrations and how they told the story so clearly and then requested to listen to the book in audio. My other son Jesse, gained a clearer understanding of what’s really happening in Ukraine through this book. He commented It was far clearer and better than the news on TV.

Therefore, I see this book Fleeing the Russians! as a rich cross-curricular middle-school resource which kids will love reading at school or as a great homeschooling text.
