    Violet

Darkness had consumed the mountain and Violet knew she needed to get off Casper Mountain hours ago, but she’d been having so much fun with her friends on Thanksgiving she hadn’t left. So many had already planned to stay in the cabin, but she had work in the morning and couldn’t be stuck with the impending snowstorm. Well, it wasn’t impending any longer as large snowflakes fell in thick waves.

She slowed down even more, moving her gear shifter into drive two in order to let the engine slow her down instead of her brakes. It was a trick her father taught her, but that didn’t account for snow on the ground. She let out a slow breath as her heart rate picked up. She was approaching the steep loops. The final section before she was officially off the damn mountain and out of danger. Head lights approached from behind, but they didn’t get too close, giving her plenty of space to maneuver if she needed to hit the brakes.

Carefully, she turned down the first stretch. The best way she could describe this section was like a kid drawing a wavy line or a few s’s stacked and connected to each other. Thankfully, her side hugged the mountain face, which was a lot safer than coming up. Two down, a few more to go. She adjusted her hands on the steering wheel, hoping to release some of the tension in her shoulders, but it wasn’t working. With another turn, she saw the little section she’d been hoping for. At the end of this one, there was a tiny house buried off the road, signaling the last major turn before the long stretch of road that dipped into a growing neighborhood that rested at the base.

Casper was a high elevation city so when it snowed, it snowed hard, and by now a good layer was clinging to her hood and the ground. It was so thick she worried about the final turn; it was wide on her end but not on the other end and lots of almost crashes happened in this little section. Before she could control her heart beat it picked up. The music barely registering as she turned the wheel. Headlights flashed in her driver’s side window, and she jerked the wheel to the right and hit the brakes. Ice coated this section of road, sending her sliding. Instinct kicked in and she let off the brakes, then hit them again, hoping she was no longer on ice.

Her hopes were dashed as she headed right for the house. The other car coming up tapped her side, and the air left her lungs as the car groaned and started tipping to the right. Oh fuck! No, this can’t freaking be happening! She screamed as it completely rolled over onto the ledge next to the house. Her seatbelt bit at her skin, keeping her in place, and all her muscles were so tight she couldn’t move for a few moments.

Are you okay in there? a male voice called out, breaking her from her panic induced lock up. She blinked a few times as the song Naughty Children by Grace Potter filtered into her mind. Mentally she checked herself, her toes and fingers moved, and her neck didn’t hurt as she turned
