Ransom

A gentle rain had just begun to fall from the late November sky. Honey, get the triplets’ raincoats on, please.

It’s raining? Aspen asked with much angst in her tone.

No, I said then laughed. I just thought it might be fun to add to the chore of getting our six-year-olds dressed is all. Jogging to the bedroom across the hallway, I went to help my wife of six years. I caught her rolling her eyes as she pulled the kids’ raincoats out of their closet. It’s a light rain right now, but it’s going to get heavier.

Why, on their last day of school before they get out for the Thanksgiving holiday, does rain have to complicate things? Aspen wiped some beads of sweat from her brow.

Getting three wiggly, tired, grumpy kids ready for school seemed to be a real chore. And after I left with the triplets, my wife’s next task would be to get our two-year-old twins bathed and dressed then fed breakfast.

I thought she needed the holiday break more than the kids did. How about we forgo those Thanksgiving plans you’ve made and I’ll get the cook to make that feast. You’re doing way too much, Aspen. You need a break.

"But she’s coming, Ransom. She blew a chunk of curly dark hair out of her eyes. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen her, and I don’t want her to think that I’m some uppity rich bitch who has servants do all their dirty work."

Running my arms around her from behind, I kissed her neck as the triplets made faces at our display of affection then tore off out of the bedroom. Gross, Elijah shouted.

The impending appearance of my wife’s long-lost mother had Aspen’s nerves more frazzled than they usually were. It’s going to be okay, Honey. You’ll see.

It’s all just so hard, Ransom. She turned to face me, running her arms around my neck. I don’t remember her at all since she left when I was just a little baby. With Dad’s death, I never expected that she would ever be able to find me.

She knew your name, Baby. I kissed the tip of her nose as I swayed with her. Maybe it was your father she ran away from more so than you. I guess you’ll get your chance to ask her all the things you’ve wanted to know all these years.

The publicity is why she found me, Ransom. Aspen pulled herself out of my arms. That has me a bit worried about why she’s finally gotten in contact with me after all these years. She looked at the doorway then sighed, I’ve gotta get to the twins, and you’ve gotta get the others to school. Be careful driving in the rain.

With big oil being considered somewhat on the evil side, the board thought it might be a good idea to make a commercial using a family. And why not use mine? Aspen and I both actively worked for Whitaker Oil and were part owners of the company, it made perfect sense.

Nationwide commercials had my wife’s face all over the televisions in America. Her mother was bound to have seen her at some time. Putting two and two together came easy since Aspen hyphenated her last name. Aspen Dell-Whitaker had become a bigwig in our company. Her knowledge of the industry proved exceptional, and she rose to the top quickly once she had her Master’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering.

With her as my catalyst, I too delved into the company my grandfather had built from the ground up. That woman brought the best out in everyone she had anything to do with. I was confident that she’d bring the best out in her mother as well.

I’ll be careful. I kissed her on the cheek before following her out of the room. And you think about what I said. Letting someone else cook the Thanksgiving dinner wouldn’t be considered uppity at all.

With a heavy sigh, she walked down the hallway toward the twins’ bedroom. I want her to like me, Ransom. I don’t expect you to understand.

Good, because I didn’t understand her at all. Everyone likes you, Aspen. She will too.
