Marta sat near the metal rail, her back to the French Riviera. The small, three-legged stool scraped against the ground like the screech of some gull. She tapped her foot impatiently against the small beret left on the ground. The faint jingle told her the day’s take wasn’t a very impressive haul.
Behind her, she heard the sound of approaching footsteps, tapping against the boulevard, drawing nearer.
She didn’t even bother to look this time.
Another disinterested tourist, most likely.
Bah,
she spat beneath her breath. People just didn’t appreciate art. Didn’t get her.
Her eyes moved from the meager collections in the crumpled black hat up to her easel. She tilted her head, studying the caricature rendition of her favorite movie star—the man’s chin was perfectly elongated. His ears a bit too large, but that was her style, after all.
The bright pink and green polka dots implied the distance between the human heart and the forests around them. The tinsel she’d used, sticking it with glue, helped to establish the ethereal nature of human consciousness.
It took a practiced eye to truly comprehend her work...
Marta shook her head in disgust and stood up, sending the three-legged stool toppling. She didn’t have time to train the masses in the benefit of a critical eye. She hastily began packing her paint supplies. A few brushes were tapped against the side of a glass jar full of water from the Riviera itself.
That was part of her process, using the local provisions to properly create. Once the brushes were dried, wiped off, and tucked away, she torn down the easel. The painting, which she considered one of best caricatures to date, was the last to go. She dragged her stool and the painting toward where she’d locked her bike. The large cloth zip-up bag wasn’t the best for stowing or transporting such a priceless work as it sometimes smudged.
But then again...
Perhaps her work wasn’t so priceless. Wasn’t so good.
She felt her heart fall and she went still on the boulevard, closing her eyes and trying not to descend into these dark thoughts. She could remember the accusations of her father.
"Paris? You think you’ll survive in Paris! You’re not even good. You’re bad, Marta! Horrible!"
She bit her lip as the memory taunted her. She could still picture the sweat droplets on her father’s upper lip. She could remember years in that household. Her father often told her there was no meaning to the world. Art was just the human brain’s way of responding to pattern recognition.
Her father had told her that her concepts of true love and the magic of creativity were the result of chemical firings. There was no art. There was no beauty. There was no meaning. Creativity, in his mind, was the result of weak minds searching desperately for made-up meaning.
But even as she considered the accusations, her eyes narrowed. She wanted to scream at the night sky. She raised her painting above her head as if shielding herself from the moon. Briefly, she considered dashing it against the ground.
But no...no...
She hesitated briefly, realizing how silly she must have looked to any passersby. Perhaps her father was right. She was too dramatic. And maybe she wasn’t a very good artist.
She sniffed, shaking her head.
But at least she tried.
Some people, like him, failed by default—they didn’t try at all.
That’s something, isn’t it,
a voice said.
She turned sharply, startled, lowering the painting quickly. She hadn’t realized the footsteps she’d heard earlier had stopped.
But now, she found herself looking at a man. He clicked his fingers. Let me see.
She paused but then realized he was gesturing toward the painting. She hesitated, chewing on her bottom lip. Umm...It’s...It’s for sale.
She said, hopeful. She shifted her foot, hiding the beret of donations behind her bike wheel.
Let me see,
he repeated, hand extended imperiously.
She stood there for a moment, in the dark, by her bike. Most pedestrians were gone now, unwilling to be out this late. The man, though, was looking with some interest at her caricature. She sighed through her nose, deciding that while she didn’t normally sell her paintings, she needed the money.
The last thing she wanted was to ever have to run home, beginning for food and shelter.
Her father would never let her hear the end of it.
The figure was no longer speaking, and his hand was still extended. It was still dark, and she stood under a safety light which had fizzled. For a moment, she considered. Umm...You know, I’m actually leaving. Sorry. Maybe tomorrow night?
she said, her voice shaking with nervousness and fear.
The fear was rising now. She didn’t know this strange man. She didn’t see anyone else on the boulevard within shouting distance. And the man’s extended hand kept flapping like the wounded wing of some bird.
A motion demanding, not requesting. Give it here. His hand said.
When she didn’t, the figure leaned in, staring at her painting. Strong lines,
he said.
She paused. Was he complimenting her work? When was the last time someone had complimented her work?
But then, as he peered at the painting still in her hand, and as she leaned back uneasily, one hand against her bike, the man suddenly snorted. Oh, gross.
He made a disgusted noise in his throat. That’s what I thought.
Suddenly, his hand darted to his pocket.
Another roller-coaster of emotions: at first offended at the noise, then startled by his sudden motion.
Then terror.
The man had pulled a knife. He was walking toward her. Five paces away. Four. Three. He murmured calmly as he approached. We’ll see if the DGSI is faster this time, hmm?
Hey! Hey!
she yelled. She raised her painting defensively.
The knife punctured through it, ripping down. She glimpsed a flash of the silver blade. She dropped her painting, stumbling back. Her bike was still locked. No time to unlock it. She turned, trying to run.
Too late.
He was on her, trampling her painting as he lunged.
CHAPTER ONE
Adele took the creaking wooden steps as if in a daze.
She could hear Claudia, John’s daughter, sobbing, her head pressed to her father’s chest. Adele’s gaze moved like a searchlight, slow and sweeping, past where John knelt at the base of the porch, his large, muscled arms wrapped gently around his daughter’s form. He didn’t speak, his lips now pressed in a thin, grim line.
Adele spotted a streak of red in Claudia’s dark hair, some crimson stain trailing down the side of her face, washed by a tear and carried to the tip of her wobbling chin.
Adele blinked, her eyes shuttering like the lens of an old camera.
Only a
