About this ebook
David Greenberg may own an antiquities gallery in St. Louis, but he’s no stranger to the sketchier side of the tracks filled with scam artists and gamblers. His sophisticated worldview comes in handy when he hears from an old love for the first time in twenty years.
Miriam Solomon had run off to Israel with Greenberg’s best friend, but now she needs the antiquities dealer’s help. Said best friend, her husband, committed suicide, but beforehand, instructed her to recover an artifact: the last surviving nail from Jesus’s cross. The quest piques Greenberg’s curiosity as rumors of Jesus’s return to Earth have started to spread.
With nothing much to lose, Greenberg agrees to help—and is immediately thrust into a world of kidnapping, assassination, and smarmy televangelists. With a burly bodyguard known as God’s Left Tackle at his side, Greenberg heads to Israel and uncovers an international conspiracy—a toxic cocktail of cutting-edge science, human achievement, and greed.
The Second Coming just may be Greenberg’s last hurrah.
“History, science and mystery-lovers alike will devour Ed Protzel’s The Antiquities Dealer. It’s a globetrotting thrill ride with a unique cast of characters who navigate intense action sequences, confounding puzzles and supremely high stakes.” —Rob Samborn, author of The Prisoner of Paradise
“[A] deep story of religion, evolution, and sci-fi. There is no gentle lead-in, we dive straight into the story at the start and we’re off and running on a journey to find what seems to be impossible.” —Anne-Marie Reynolds, Readers’ Favorite (5 Stars)
Ed Protzel
Ed Protzel grew up in St. Louis, the son of a Jewish father and a part-Cherokee mother. For a time he lived in an orphanage when his parents divorced, and left home after high school to live in St. Louis’s bohemian Gaslight Square entertainment district. These experiences gave Protzel a unique perspective, which is reflected in the traits of many of his fictional characters: outsiders and gamesters—male or female—on lonely quests, seeking justice, love, and fulfillment against society’s blindness. Protzel began writing both novels and screenplays while in college, working on them in his spare time while employed in securities management. He kept writing as he moved around the United States. He did some freelance work for 20th Century Studios and completed several original screenplays, one of which was optioned by a producer. But Protzel couldn’t abide what he calls Hollywood’s “hyper-Darwinism,” so he enrolled in grad school at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he earned his master’s in English and creative writing.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I couldn't finish it. I can finish almost anything, and particularly given that I had committed to review the book for the Early Reviewer program I had planned to slog through, but I just couldn't do it. I had expected to really like this book, as it sounded to be in the same vein as Tom Robbins...absurd and nerdy, bringing in esoteric history and travel linked with a crazy adventure. It even started off at a fast pace, with a shooting and risky escape within the first 10 pages. But despite the action in the content, it moved slowly, with sluggish writing and uninteresting characters, and despite the theoretically intriguing plot line, I had no interest in seeing how it turned out. I read exceptionally fast, yet after only getting three quarters of the way through after a year, I finally had to throw in the towel.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I liked the premise well enough - underground research to clone famous people from history. David Greenberg, however, is a rather unlikely action hero and seems awfully reliant on dumb luck to stay alive than an innate talent for heroism. He is also oddly ambivalent about his fate - maybe it's a Jewish thing, but I found it to be an interesting part of his persona. This appears to be the first book in a series - it'll be interesting to see if the author expands on the premise mentioned above or whether something altogether different.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Antiquities dealer David Greenberg is drawn into an international conspiracy by an his first love. The sect she belongs to plans to take the world by storm using bleeding-edge technology, but need an ancient artifact to move forward with the plot. Murders abound as many different parties try to locate it.I had a real hard time with this book. The protagonist is unlikeable and some of the Dan Brown-esque twists are hard to follow. If one is a hard-core Dan Brown fan, then you'll probably enjoy the math and other bits to this story, but it is not a fast read and can drag at times.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The Antiquities Dealer by Ed Protzel has a real slow start. There were a number of times I was about to give up on it. I persevered through it, and by the end, it was decently paced. The protagonist wasn't really likable, so that didn't help with the story. If you like chess and number puzzles, it might be for you. Personally, math is not my favorite subject.
