    A Mare's Nest - B. G. Thomas

    1

    Dec

Declan couldn't help but think that being forced into seeing his very recent wife was the last possible thing he wanted. Mix that with the brutal, north Florida heat and the shrill shrieks of children in and around the perimeter of the pool, and he was in his very own version of overly chlorinated, humid hell.

If it weren't for his two girls and the fact that they had begged and pleaded for him to join their mother for swim lessons, he would more than likely already be day drunk in his shitty, post-divorce apartment, watching old reruns of Seinfeld and helplessly sitting in his own despair.

The younger kids were taking their lessons on one side of the massive country club pool, and the older kids were on the other side, near the deep end. Declan and his ex-wife, Alison, didn't have the money for the swim school, but there they were. When Alison had her mind set on something, she was sure to get her way, and it was no different in regard to the lessons. It's not like she was paying for them. Of course not.

Sera, Declan's eldest, shot him a squinty look from across the pool and waved at him excitedly before diving into the depths. A deafening cry of displeasure sounded from the shallow end, where their youngest, Kallie, who had just turned four, squirmed and kicked her way out of her swim coach's arms and received a mouthful of water because of it.

Kallie's coach grinned at the fiery girl and hoisted her back into his arms, kicking and screaming for her life as though she was running from a make-believe monster underneath her bed. Declan shook his head while grinning. That was his spunky girl, always fighting tooth and nail to get what she wanted. Right then, she wanted to be on dry land, somewhere far, far away from the pool.

Alison grunted in something between annoyance and humor at their youngest. It was an exhausting adventure being the mother and father to a set of hard-headed daughters, but it was more than worth it. If nothing else, Dec was thankful that he and Alison had gotten together, because no matter the pain and mess that their relationship had ended in, he had Sera and Kallie.

Not surprised she's giving the coach a hard time, Alison muttered from where she stood several feet away. It was the first thing she'd said to him since they'd arrived at the country club close to thirty minutes
