I started working on my first book right after the 2008 presidential election.

I was in my mid-20s at the time and had just witnessed a bloodbath at the polls. Among my peers, voters ages 18-29, prehistoric John McCain got absolutely annihilated by Barack Hussein Obama, or as I called him…BHO.

BHO did what other modern-day politicians could not do with any type of consistency: energize the highly coveted youth vote. Up until that point, the conventional wisdom surrounding younger voters was that, while their numbers were large, they were too fickle and distracted to play any meaningful role in an election outcome.

So politicians of both parties generally ignored them or just paid them lip service every four years.

But then along came BHO, the first serious (half-)black presidential candidate who, according to Joe Biden, was both clean and articulate.

He not only energized young people, he mobilized them into an army of advocates, campaign volunteers, and most notably, first-time voters.

As a result, BHO notched impressive victories in key swing states, including Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana, among others. His margin of victory in those states, as I reported, was largely due to how brutally he beat down McCain among millennials.

Another way to put it in light of the book you’re about to read: By backing Barack, my generation helped accelerate America’s decline into fiscal insanity and cultural craziness.

More on that later.

Part of BHO’s appeal was that, if we’re being honest, McCain looked as though the Grim Reaper accompanied him at every campaign stop. Young people thought to themselves: Hmm, why should I vote for a guy who may croak at any moment?

Can’t say I blame them there.

But BHO’s main appeal was the messianic ways in which his presidential campaign was framed. His election wasn’t just a matter of policy differences with a Republican candidate; it was a matter of political salvation.

Thus, when BHO was declared the winner on Nov. 4, 2008, swarms of students at Maine’s Bowdoin College, to highlight but one example, huddled as a group to bow their heads and sing the redemptive hymn, Amazing Grace.

America was lost, but now was found; we were blind, but now see. Our chains are gone; Barack has set us free!

The act of redemption, in the eyes of millennials, came not through the Cross, but through the corridors of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The nation’s Great Awokening had begun.

Unstable college students finally found purpose for their empty, coddled lives.

Students like Sarah Phillips. She was attending a Florida school at the time and had this confession about the election: I seriously think I had an emotional seizure or something. My whole body seized up. I couldn’t breathe. It’s like I really mattered…I picked the president!

Now, I don’t mean to pick on Sarah.

Okay, maybe only slightly.

The truth is that her public Obamagasm embodied the mental mummification of my generation, a generation that got razzle-dazzled by vacuous sloganeering and cheesy iconography.

Hope and change, baby!

I chronicled this lobotomization in Obama Zombies: How the Liberal Machine Brainwashed My Generation.

The book resonated with a great number of people who were also troubled that our country had taken a turn for the worse…and the disturbing part millennials had played in it.

Young people were so immersed in how Obama made them feel that they failed to evaluate the problematic policies he proposed. This blind allegiance was obvious enough that the phrase Obama Zombie even became an entry in the Urban Dictionary.

With Barack at the helm, this army of young voters felt empowered to change everything that they had been indoctrinated to believe was wrong about America. Their hypersensitive narcissism was trumped by only that of BHO’s.

But here’s the thing: The Sarah Phillipses of the country are all grown up.

They’re pushing 40.

Perhaps they’ve matured out of their solipsistic tendencies? Maybe they’ve traveled abroad and have concluded that, in comparison to other countries, America is a pretty damn good place to live? That American history is actually more nuanced and complex than Howard Zinn’s take on things? That Obama’s infamous apology tour was overwrought and misguided? That Americans should celebrate their civil rights victories rather than seethe over a distant past? That becoming gooey eyed over politicians is foolish? That trusting the expert class is even more foolish? That utopian visions promised by leftists are delusional and dangerous and always harm the very groups they claim to help?

Ha! Had ya there for a moment.

Oh, the Sarah Phillipses are pushing 40 all right. But they have purple hair and nose rings, just like their gender studies professor. Some of them are the gender studies professors now.

They’re drowning in student debt because, as it turns out, proficiency in Lesbian Novels Since World War II doesn’t translate into a high-paying salary. So now they’re begging Bernie and Biden to have you, the taxpayer, pay off their worthless four-year college degree in grievance literature.

If they are married with children—a big IF—they and their kids are double-masked at all times and all places, especially outside, even though they are vaccinated. It’s a sign of their unrivaled virtue…in contrast to those unwashed masses living in rural America.

If they’re married sans kids, well, they’re still pushing a stroller around…but there’s a fluffy dog inside instead. Not an actual human baby. Procreation is environmental terrorism, after all.

These misguided do-gooders are hip to all the fashionable buzzwords of today: white privilege, microaggressions, intersectionality, equity, inclusion, implicit bias, antiracism, social justice…and they can recite to you, by heart, the 58 different gender options once listed by Facebook.

What, you don’t know the difference between demisexual and pansexual?

Hate crime!

They also have bizarre examples of what constitutes white supremacy, including: showing up to work on time, linear thinking, delayed gratification, credit scores, meritocracy, basic English, basic math, standardized tests, Abraham Lincoln memorials, equality under the law, capitalism, property rights, and the Western Civilization staple of free speech.

They tell you that men can menstruate and that men can become pregnant.

They announce their pronouns on social media and scold you if you don’t do the same.

They demand that biological boys compete against biological girls, if the biological boy merely identifies as a girl.

Hey, Mom, why does that chick…have a stick?

Their yard signs are as obnoxious as they are, announcing to the neighborhood in all caps that BLACK LIVES MATTER, TRUST THE SCIENCE, and LOVE IS LOVE.

They call speech they don’t like violence, yet defend the violence they inflict as noble expressions of anti-fascism.

Their illustrations of rape culture include Pepé Le Pew of Looney Tunes and the Disney classic Snow White.

They categorize your level of oppression or culpability as an oppressor using the retrogressive standard of skin color.

They police the jokes of standup comedians for possible transgressions against progressive orthodoxy.

And they go on deplatforming jihads against anyone to the right of homosexual liberal commentator Andrew Sullivan, as homosexual liberal commentator Andrew Sullivan himself learned when he was abruptly ousted by New York Magazine.

In short, the Sarah Phillipses of the country are woke, and they are determined to render American life and culture as miserable and fractured as they are.

The Obama Zombies have returned…

…in the form of The Woking Dead.

Which brings us to A.J. Rice’s incisive book before you.

In this anthology of essays, he chronicles how this woke plague has contaminated large sectors of our society, including entertainment, the media, politics, the military, and sports.

Take his pieces on the military, as one example, in his section seven, The Great Awokening.

To ensure that America remains the dominant world superpower we need a superior military. It serves as a deterrent to other nations, which is important these days with Russian revanchism on the rise and with the imperialist ambitions of China.

Russia’s actively recruiting Ivan Dragos to populate its ranks while China is suspected of trying to form super soldiers who have biologically enhanced capabilities, as one report noted.¹

How does the Harris-Biden administration respond?

By appointing the very first chief of diversity and inclusion to micromanage our special forces, of course!

Now the guys in our special-ops divisions will have to explain themselves to a man named Richard Torres-Estrada as to why their combat units aren’t sparkling with rainbows.

Who is Richard Torres-Estrada, you ask? He’s a veteran of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority who served in the combat role as an equal opportunity officer.

In other words, he’s a bean-counting bureaucrat from D.C.

The U.S. Special Operations Command congratulated the new hire by posting on Twitter that they look forward to his contribution in enhancing the capabilities and effectiveness of [Special Operations Forces] through diversity of talent, helping us recruit the best of the best.

A.J. puts this pick into perspective in his essay The Few, the Proud, the ‘Woke’: Problem is, the special forces were already doing just that—recruiting the ‘best of the best.’ And rejecting those who weren’t—regardless of their skin color or equipment. Unless, of course, Torres-Estrada believes—as is implied—that current SEALs, Green Berets and Army Rangers are somehow less than ‘the best.’

Rice is right: The flawed assumption undergirding much of woke thought is that wherever racial or gender disparities exist, like they do in the military, society is to blame. And by society, I mean white men. And by white men, I mean heterosexual, Judeo-Christian white men.

Disparities, ipso facto, are considered proof of American’s systemic racism against minorities. No evidence required.

Yet, as A.J. asks, how does ‘diversity’ enhance talent, exactly? Is a soldier more—or less—capable on account of skin color, sex, or sexual orientation? Doesn’t the winnowing of training, the measuring up—or not—to standards that apply to everyone accomplish that purpose?

Bingo.

The Woking Dead are fixated on race, gender, and sexuality when what they should be fixated on is…excellence. Especially involving military affairs. Why are we running social engineering experiments with our armed forces? Who cares what they look like?

The only relevant question is…can they protect us from our enemies?

Not sure about you, but I don’t want to be forced to learn Mandarin one day. I barely got through Spanish class.

Torres-Estrada was eventually reassigned to a different position after word got out that he had compared Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler and had depicted the children’s story Goldilocks and the Three Bears as an example of racism. Which brings up another ugly truth about The Woking Dead: When they use the word diversity, they don’t actually connote diversity of thought or tolerance for other viewpoints. The plain understanding of diversity has been woke washed—stripped of its original intent and weaponized by the left to blunt dissent and create conformity.

But dissent must happen. Silence is not an option. Conformity must be rigorously opposed.

Because wokeness is a dangerous ideology.

It’s a noxious stew that combines the deconstructionist garbage of postmodernism with the cultural Marxism of social justice. It begins from the erroneous premise that America is a hostile and oppressive place, that our systems are systemically flawed, and that they must be torn down and built anew.

The Woking Dead do not simply seek to reform America’s institutions. They seek to destroy them.

We can’t let that happen.

We love our country and want her preserved for our kids and their kids.

We want it now. There is no acceptable alternative.

America is great because America is good. Most Americans believe this. Because it’s true.

Ronald Reagan hearkened back to our founding when he called America the shining city on a hill. He also called out the Soviet Union for what it was—the evil empire.

Donald Trump brought a similar clarity to the office of the presidency. He jettisoned the establishment belief that globalism would usher in a golden age, recognizing that its chief achievements were shipping American jobs overseas and making China into a powerful economic and military rival. Trump saw America as good.

Trump tapped into America’s true power like no president since Reagan. He had China on the run. He had foreign oil on the ropes. He had the border secured and America soaring. By taking the fight to America’s enemies and standing up for our country against the woke crybullies, Trump became a countercultural icon. He fought the Chinese virus, the Democrat-media complex’s Russia hoax, and lifted the Republican Party to new heights across the states—while battling the likes of Jeff Flake and Ben Sasse who wanted nothing more than to turn the GOP into genial losers again.

The most terrifying moment in Mary Shelley’s horror classic, Frankenstein , is not the moment the monster awakens for the first time. The most terrifying moment is not even when the monster escapes or when it kills for the first time.

The most terrifying moment is when the monster returns to wreak havoc on its creator on his wedding night.

There is a monster stalking the Democratic Party, which they claim they do not understand. In fact, they say they fear it. They’re in a panic,² like villagers fleeing in terror from a ghoul in the darkness.³

But why the long faces? Why the shock? Like Dr. Frankenstein, the Democrats could have prevented this terrifying scene by never creating the monster in the first place.

Longtime Democrat strategist James Carville called the monster a form of suicide for the Democratic Party.⁵ But Carville had a hand in the monster’s creation, as did every Democrat of the last several decades.

Small-town Mayor Pete Buttigieg sounded the alarm on his way to losing Nevada to the monster and eventually leaving the race entirely.⁶ But Mayor Pete calls for many of the same policies the monster wants because the monster is in control now. Even the so-called moderate Joe Biden wants to empower the state to command the economy from Washington. He’s doing the monster’s bidding, too. A win in South Carolina by Joe Biden cannot save you from the monster.

The Democrats as a party claim to be shocked at the monster’s rise. But their shock is feigned. It is disingenuous. Because the Democrats have been constructing this monster for decades.

More than 40 years ago, the Democrats went to the political science lab with a mad plan. Like Victor Frankenstein, they wanted to play God. They would shift the nation’s beliefs to the left toward socialism over time. They would be patient. They would march through America’s institutions and use them to cobble their monster together. They used the nicest words to describe their horror—words like fairness and equality. But what they meant was collectivism, envy, and lust for godlike power over the rest of us. They embedded socialist dogma, quietly, in our education system to raise generations of socialists. They went to work on our churches, shifting them to the left bit by bit, too.

They embedded socialists into the deep state. The assembled monster stirred a little.

They captured the big media. They captured big Hollywood. They captured big academia. They pushed leftist dogma from every part of the cultural high ground.

When the time was right, the young hearts and minds they insidiously captured would push and pull the nation farther and farther to the left, toward collectivist thinking and socialist governance. Lighting would strike. The monster would fully awaken. That was the plan.

They can’t say they did not know what the monster was and what it would do. They lived through the Cold War. They knew what socialism inevitably leads to. Matthews knows it’s a murderous beast. He said as much last month, as the monster’s power surged.

I have my own views of the word ‘socialist’ and I’d be glad to share them with you in private. They go back to the early 1950s. I have an attitude about them. I remember the Cold War, he said.⁷

Matthews continued, I have an attitude towards [Fidel] Castro. I believe if Castro and the Reds had won the Cold War there would have been executions in Central Park and I might have been one of the ones getting executed. And certain other people would be there cheering, okay? This is the Truman-Kennedy brand of anti-Communism talking and unfortunately, it’s mostly dead.

Four years ago, the monster got a taste of life, followed quickly by rejection leading to rage. The party that created it cheated it. The socialist monster should have held the presidential nomination in its hands but the Democrats played superdelegate games and usurped it in favor of a corrupt and unlikable, passionless substitute, Hillary Clinton. And so the monster the Democrats created seethed with rage against them.

That monster escaped years ago and it has now returned to wreak vengeance on its creators. Bernie Sanders and his socialist base are loose and using the chains that the Democrats thought held it in place to jerk the party around. And it’s entirely the Democrats’ fault.

At any point during the decades that Sen. Bernie Sanders sat in the Senate, the Democrats could have chosen not to accept him. He openly rejected them. He refused to wear the party label and called himself an Independent. He even called the Democratic Party corrupt. But the Democrats wanted power so badly they took the democratic socialist in, knowing full well what a monstrous ideology he believes.⁸ Knowing that he partied with the Soviets and admires communist dictators Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. They wanted him for the single seat he gave them toward a majority. They thought they could control him.

Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) believes that nominating Sanders puts the Democrats’ House majority in peril.⁹ He’s right. And it’s as much his fault as it is that of any other Democrat who failed to denounce the left’s insidious march through our institutions. Clyburn endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden in the South Carolina primary, but Sanders hauled Biden to the far left like the monster pulling its creator around by the chains that once held it in the lab. The monster’s rise is Clyburn’s and every other Democrat’s fault for failing to deal with it before it got too strong.

Socialism is a ghastly ideology. It substitutes faith in God and the family for fealty to the state. It crushes dissent. It institutionalizes terror. It divides families and makes secret police of subjects who were once called citizens. It purposely destroys personal and economic freedom to foster dependency. It corrodes the soul and destroys personal responsibility.

Returning to Chris Matthews, the socialist Occupy left his party has fostered for decades now wants to deprive him of his job because he said things they disapprove of.¹⁰ So he apologized. The monster is stronger than its creators now. Speech codes. Political correctness. Othering and cancel culture. All of it. If Sanders were to somehow become president of the United States, the violent Bernie Bros¹¹ will come for the likes of Chris Matthews first.

The monster comes to haunt its creator first. Sanders’ conditions are what every socialist really wants: absolute power, first over the Democrats, next over the whole country.

Joe Biden promised to give lots of stuff to seniors if they voted for him and some probably did.¹² Now it’s time to deliver the stolen goods.

What did Uncle Joe—who is already 78 years old and thus America’s most senior president to date—offer seniors in return for their political support?

One of the biggest promises was to increase the Social Security benefits paid out to retired seniors by asking—he means forcing—not-retired people to pay more of their earning in taxes to finance them, at the cost of their own retirement nest egg, ever-diminishing.¹³

These higher earners already pay the most in Social Security (FICA) taxes—which take 15 percent right off the top, before federal/state and other taxes take more—while deriving the least benefit when they retire because their benefits are subject to higher (again) taxes on the same progressive basis that applies higher income taxes to those with higher incomes.
