the 1 train: Glimpses of New York City
By Joshua Ian

About this ebook
A duo of short stories about life in New York City: one a contemplative take on love and connection, one a wry and witty observation of a frugal night on the town.
Joshua Ian
Joshua Ian can easily be captured by a witty turn of phrase or a low-bottomed electronic bassline. If you manage to combine the two, then you have his heart forever. He lives in New York City and is a keen cinema lover and self-proclaimed Dark Chocolate Expert. When not staring at a blank screen and cursing the futility of life, he can be found watching cozy mystery shows, daydreaming of his future kaftan collection, or scouring used book vendors to accumulate more vintage romances and mysteries than his shelves are actually capable of handling. One day he plans to travel the world - to see what each country has to offer in the way of used books, movie theatres and dark chocolate, naturally.

THE 1 TRAIN
As the train came to a stop and the doors clanged open, Victor dove towards them. Grabbing the side of the door with one hand, he leaned out from inside the train and tried to force himself to vomit, but it only came out a painful sounding dry heave. He heard the warning ding and jerked back in. He moved as if caught in slow motion, pulling the bottom of his t-shirt up to wipe his mouth. I noticed how his jeans hung higher on one side, making the band of his exposed underwear seem lopsided, so that he looked even less sure on his feet.
You so nasty!
Neicey exclaimed, beside me.
Victor squeezed back in between us.
Shut the fuck up, Berenice,
he said, over-enunciating each syllable of her name.
She guffawed.
Drunk ass,
she countered and we both laughed. Victor grinned, but covered it with his hand and elbowed me in the side.
The train lunged to a sudden halt between stops and he threw himself over me, reaching for the metal grip that ran along the sides of the seats. I thought he might vomit again, as he hovered above me, his midsection contracting, but instead he just spat onto the floor of the train. He dropped back and leaned against me, pressing
