Summary of the three-volume novel series “A Strip of Water”
The three-novel series "A Strip of Water", through the story of the protagonist Yanyan, vividly describes the experience of Chinese self-funded students who went to Japan to study in the late 1980s, then kept working and living in Japan. From the perspective of everyday life, this series of novels delicately depicts all aspects of Japanese society, whether it is people's attitude to sex, the handling of corporate interpersonal relationships, or the emotional connection between family members, all of which are portrayed realistically.
Yanyan, like other young people who were eager to get the opportunity to study at that time, bravely went abroad to study in Japan as a self-funded student. She experienced the difficulties of studying abroad, the embarrassment of not having money, and the hardship of being unable to speak the language at all in the beginning. She struggled alone, but completed her studies; in fierce competition she managed to enter a Japanese company, worked hard with Japanese employees with the same wage, benefits and duties; later on, she married to a Japanese, living in harmony with family members and integrating into their lives.
Yanyan's generation of international students shone with the brilliance of the Chinese people, who are hard-working, humble and upward-looking. They inherited the excellent traditions of the Chinese nation, and at the same time, they also absorbed Japanese culture. Some of them married Japanese and continued to live happily in Japan. Their descendants carry both Chinese and Japanese heritage.
China and Japan are neighbours separated only a strip of water. The authors wish the Chinese students who once studied in Japan and their descendants will become the link that conveys the friendship between the two countries and a connecting bridge, contribute to peace between the two countries.
