About this ebook

The Spears govern Burunga with an iron fist, recklessly murdering the Rungans. Colm Djandhi guides his siblings to the mountains of glory, where they hide the magic sword in a cave, before joining other Rungans displaced in remote forests.
The growing power of the Spears poses a major threat to the Lords, their long-time enemies. However, the Spears get a dose of their own medicine when Gustavo Payoyub, President of Dandy, threatens their increasing power with a force ten times stronger than the Spears.
The Spears also fear a coalition of the Lords and the Rungans. Together, they would be too powerful to ward off. To prevent the worst case scenario, the Spears force the Rungans to the front line to act as human shields against the President's army, hoping their single-handed defense would wipe the Rungans out, along with any possible alliance with the Lords.
The desperate Rungans must overcome fear and helplessness in this imposed role. They have to fight for survival. To do this, they task Colm with training the makeshift army on traditional weapons. Once at the battlefield, the Rungans are blessed with supernatural powers. They obliterate the Lords entirely and come looking for the Spears.

    EXT. WOODS - EVENING

COLM, 18, is sitting on a trunk of a tree, pondering the situation. RUDOLF, 16, and DELPHINE, 14, join him, sprawling out in the grass. They all look extremely tired.

    COLM

At least we made it to safety.

    RUDOLF

What are we going to do now?

After a moment, Colm finally comes to a decision.

    COLM

We will go to Auntie Peggy in Nyanza.

    Delphine shifts nervously.

    DELPHINE

    That’s a long walk...

Colm answers more sure than he feels.

    COLM

    We will make it.

Rudolf stands up and turns around, searching for something.

    DELPHINE

It will take us a week to get to Nyanza.

    COLM

We will figure out what to do next there.

Rudolf points his right index finger to the woods.

    RUDOLF

There is a path crossing the woods... but I do not know if we go left or right.

    COLM

And that path may lead to the Spears.

    Rudolf looks even more uncertain.

    RUDOLF

But we have to get out of here.

Colm looks up to the sky.

    COLM

    We will leave at daybreak.

    DELPHINE

We cannot spend the night here. Where are we going to sleep?

    COLM

If you can sleep, please, do so anywhere you wish. We will wait for daybreak to proceed with this adventure.

Delphine sighs and leans her head against an exposed root of the tree. Rudolf lies back down on the ground, trying to get comfortable, but unable to do so.

    RUDOLF

    I hate Crock.

    DELPHINE

    Robert organized the whole thing.

    RUDOLF

They are the same shit. They are murderers.

    COLM

I will not die at this age.

    (beat)

    That would be cowardice.

Rudolf and Delphine think about this a moment.

    RUDOLF

It would be a meaningless death, too.

    COLM

There would be no Djandhis left to pursue our father’s dream.

Delphine turns over to face him.

    DELPHINE

    What was our father’s dream?

    COLM

To keep the unity of Burunga and make the country strong, as it once was.

    DELPHINE

His dream did not come to fruition...

    COLM

But he died a noble death. He will be remembered as a hero. Now, we must pursue his dream. We must achieve his goals.

    DELPHINE

How? The Spears will not spare any of our family!

    COLM

We will cut off their dirty hands, before they can put them on us. We will avenge our parents.

    RUDOLF

The bastards think they got away with it.

    COLM

But they will pay a million times over. This I promise.

    DELPHINE

But how? We have nothing left.

    COLM

    We have the magic sword.

    Delphine still looks unconvinced.

    COLM

The Spears will not keep power for long. This I swear.

    EXT. ROAD - EVENING

Three Spears block the road in and out. ALEXANDER, NICOLAS, and RUSHIH place piles of objects across the road. Alexander tries to rile them up for the hard labor.

    ALEXANDER

Come on, build up the barriers! No Rungans enter or leave the city! We will kill them all!

    RUSHIH

Will we shut off the entire country? What if the Rungans try to run?

    ALEXANDER

We will shut off all entrances and exits. They will not run or receive support.

    NICOLAS

What is the point of killing runaways? We want them to leave the city...

Alexander stops working and turns to Nicolas and Rushih.

    ALEXANDER

If they run, they may reorganize and come back in by force. We must annihilate them. Completely.

    EXT. WOODS - MORNING

It is dawn, and the moon is shining. Colm, Rudolf, and Delphine brush their teeth with thin sticks from the tree. They wash their faces with morning dew. Cocks are crowing, and early birds are singing.

    RUDOLF

Do you think Agathon has been killed? The Spears hate him. I bet they cleansed the university.

    DELPHINE

The roads are still empty... Their attacks must be happening simultaneously.

Their thoughts are interrupted by birds warbling in the tree. They watch the birds jump from branch to branch.

    RUDOLF

    (to Delphine)

The bird songs seem to give you some comfort.

    She smiles.

    DELPHINE

    They’re so full of joy!

    (beat)

If I were a bird, I would fly to the mountain of glory.

    RUDOLF

If we were birds, we would be safe in the trees over the Ronza River.

    DELPHINE

Nothing is safe. God created man and gave him power to destroy His own creatures!

    RUDOLF

Man is not the most powerful living thing. He does not even control the environment around him.

    COLM

Man could use wings to fly to safety when skies turn gray. Paradoxically, God gave wings to birds when nobody seeks to harm them.

The flock of birds flies above them. The children tilt their heads up and watch the birds fly freely.

    DELPHINE

And they sing while humans cry.

    COLM

    Why shouldn’t they sing?

A fox comes slinking through the woods and crosses right in front of them. Colm clears his nose. The scared fox runs away.

    DELPHINE

Nothing trusts human beings. Our presence even disturbs the fox’s peace!

    COLM

Nothing is more dangerous to man than man himself.

    RUDOLF

We run from humans. Wildlife runs from us. Where is the world going from here?

    Rudolf looks toward the sunrise.

    RUDOLF

It’s daybreak, Colm. The Spears may follow us... The longer we stay, the more we expose ourselves to the enemy.

They pick up their luggage and start moving. Heavy shots sound through the woods. Thunderous sounds echo. The children stop and look around.

    RUDOLF

    What was that?

    COLM

That was over the shoreline of the river.

    Realization dawns.

    COLM

They are shooting the people running away.

    DELPHINE

    We should hurry.

They start running cautiously through the woods.

    RUDOLF

Is this the right way to Nyanza?

    COLM

    We
