The Corporate Wars - R Thomas McPherson

    Chapter 1 Defection

It was a dark and stormy night on Anteagan. The night was much like Rick Thompson’s mood.

Anteagan, the homeworld of the Wilson Corporation. Rick remembered the history lesson; this world was a new beginning for the Wilson Corps. This was the first habitable planet that Jeb Wilson discovered. After leaving Earth, the Corporation roamed the galaxy for thirty years. Once they found this planet, it was the promised land—a place to put down roots and expand the population.

There were areas of fertile green land with enough water on the planet to make a new start. In the beginning, there was peace and plenty. Other worlds were found and colonized, but none were as lovely as Anteagan. That is why The Wilson Corporate based its headquarters here.

The problem was that man brought his hostile nature with him. After three hundred years, the grotesqueries of human nature started to show themselves again. That's where Rick came in.

The lights were off in his apartment, so he could see the rain wash over the city. It only rained sometimes in this part of Anteagan, but Rick felt it appropriate. The planet was crying for the children.

The rain was washing the scum away from the city. Just as he had done this very morning. Rick wondered why high-level executives would commit crimes like child abduction, abuse, and murder.

The verdict was handed down today. Director Harris was found guilty, and Rick was glad he would pay for his crimes.

Still, he couldn’t help but feel bad for the victims. He knew that he shouldn’t get emotionally involved.

As an investigator for the Wilson Corporation, he ensured the victims got justice.

The problem was that if Rick prosecuted a high-level executive and were wrong, he would have to suffer the fate of the crime. It was part of the Spacing Corporations charter before they even left Earth. It was meant to keep the high-level executives from being inundated by frivolous lawsuits. As a result, any corporate executive crime was only sometimes investigated and was mostly ignored. Some executives believed they could do anything; some even got away with murder.

Not Harris, not today. Rick was more determined to discover who was responsible with every child found. When it led to one of the members of the Board of Directors for the Wilson Corporation, Rick felt fear, but his anger was more substantial. From the first broken body found in a dumpster, Rick promised himself that he would find whoever did this and make them pay for their crimes. He was willing to gamble with his life to ensure that the victims' families got justice.

Rick won that bet today. Rick was flooded with relief and anger as soon as the verdict was handed down.

He wanted to be by himself, so he could grieve for the children before he could leave the Justice Building today. The Director of the Legal Division approached him.

Director Hobbs. Hobbs offered him a position as The Lead Investigator for the Wilson Corporation.

The Wilson Corporation was a spacing corporation that spanned 14-star systems and governed 23 planets. It was the largest Corporation in the known galaxy.

Rick said yes at once but was now regretting that decision. He would be doing investigations at the highest levels. That meant more danger for him. Now whatever move he made, whatever investigation he followed, he would be under intense scrutiny.

It was not just knowing who committed the crime. It was a matter of being able to prove it without a doubt. The problem was that Rick was not the type of man that would break the law to get the criminals.

The legal system was not perfect, but a good man ran it. Director Hobbs wanted justice. He is a fair and honest man.

Rick’s first encounter with Hobbs was when he presented evidence to Hobbs about Harris; his only question was, Are you sure about this? Rick went over the evidence with Hobbs. After they were done, Hobbs said, I'll have the paperwork drawn up and the indictment made.

Rick was a minor investigator then. He was given the job because no one else would take it. Those with more rank and seniority dumped it on him because it was beneath their dignity. Later, when they found out it led to a member of the Board, they left it in Rick’s hands for fear that it could get them killed.

His integrity sustained him through the trial. As a result, he became known in very high circles as someone that would do what was right, no matter the cost.

Rick found that funny that a kid from the slums could be respected by the most powerful men on the planet.

Hobbs supported Rick through the entire process. Working together brought mutual admiration and respect. That’s why Hobbs offered Rick the job. Hobbs was the only person Rick had to answer to now.

Rick saw a flashing light in the window's reflection with the last thought. He turned to look at his desk and saw the comm unit flashing to get his attention. Who in the hell is calling me at this hour?

Rick moved to his desk. The caller ID showed that it was Hobbs. He decided that he wouldn’t get any sleep tonight anyway, so he might as well answer it.

He hit the button, and Hobbs appeared on the screen. Yes, Sir, what can I do for you?

I’m sorry to call you so late. Hell, it’s not even your first day yet, but I was hoping you could come down to the Legal Administration Building. We have a situation developing. I need someone I can trust.

What kind of situation do we have? Rick needed clarification. What could be so urgent? Why did anyone want to put him to work after the day he just had? He planned to take some time off to let his mind settle down after the trial.

Not over an open line. I know I’m throwing you into the fire without letting you get dressed, but I need you.

The urgent sound of Hobbs's voice let Rick know that this was important. Because of Rick's intense feeling of loyalty, he said, It will take me an hour to get there.

I'll see you then, said Hobbs, and the screen blanked out.

Rick grabbed his shirt and jacket and rushed out of his apartment. He put on his shirt while riding the lift to the parking lot on the roof. He didn't notice the old woman in the lift until she said, What, did he come home early?

Rick understood the implications but didn't want to explain himself. So instead, he smiled and said, Something like that. She just shook her head and got off at the next level.

Rick rode the lift, thinking that it moved too slowly. Once on the roof, he went to his car, got in, and said, Legal Administration Building, please. The vehicle lifted off the lot and jetted towards the destination.

Rick wondered what could be so crucial that Hobbs would call him out in the middle of the night. Why wasn't he called to the scene if it was a crime? There was nothing at the Legal Administration Building but paperwork and evidence. Most of the evidence was in holding, awaiting trial, or awaiting disposal. It must be important if Hobbs was out at this time of night.

He was starting to obsess over what it could be. Rick's mind wrapped in tight little circles during the forty-five-minute ride asking the same question. What was so important?

One of his co-workers said he was naturally obsessive, which was why he made such a good investigator. In this case, there were no details other than being called out in the middle of the night. This made his imagination run wild. There were many possibilities, each less likely than the one before.

His mind stopped when the car set down in front of the Legal Administration Building. It was time to find out what was going on.

Rick went in, but Hobbs joined him before he even got to the security desk and said, Come with me.

Rick followed Hobbs, and once the doors to the lift were closed, Hobbs started to tell him what was happening. Three hours ago, a defector from the Rossom Corporation came in and asked for political asylum. He has quite a story to tell. I think you should hear what he has to say.

A defector? What has that got to do with me?

The doors opened, Hobbs got out, and Rick followed in confusion. You'll understand once you hear his story. For right now, this is just between you and me. I want you to get the measure of the man and follow up on any leads he gives you. Hobbs opened the door to the interrogation rooms. He’s in room three.

Rick turned and started for that room, but Hobbs grabbed him by the shoulder and said, Remember, for right now, this is just between us.

Yes, Sir, said Rick, not even understanding what 'this' was. He went into room three. He automatically took note of the person's physical description in the room.

He was of medium build. Short brown hair with blue eyes. He had a pale skin tone, like a man who hardly spent any time in the sun. Rick guessed that he worked the night shift because the splotchy redness of his face suggested that he had been hidden from the light for years. While he wasn't standing, his arm length told Rick that he was about two meters tall or just under. His hands had no callouses, and the soft-formed body showed that this man was not used to hard labor.

Rick said, So, can you please tell me why I’m here?

Investigator Thompson, the man looked relieved at the sight of Rick. You are here because I asked for you.

    And who are you?

The name is Bannic, Shane Bannic. He half rose out of his seat and stuck out his hand. When he noticed Rick would not take it, he sat back down. Well, this is disappointing.

Rick was in no mood for games. What is it you want? He didn’t care if Bannic was disappointed or not.

I want protection. If I'm not on the list now, I soon will be. Bannic looked away as if he was thinking about something. Rick was unsure about what that was, but he looked worried.

What list? What are you talking about? Rick fell into interrogation mode. He pushed a little to see if he could get the information needed.

I'll get to that in a moment. First, you need to give me your word that you will put me into protective custody. His soft voice sounded undisturbed, but the worried look remained.

Rick thought he might get the information if he played on Bannic’s fears. To protect you would cost a lot of money. How do I know if your life is worth the price paid?

Bannic smiled as if he had just won the argument. That list I mentioned was a hit list from the assassin's guild.

The hair on the back of Rick’s neck prickled. Just like it did every time he felt danger in the air. Who’s on that list?

    Do we have a deal?

Rick realized that this was not an interrogation but a negotiation. I'll make you a counteroffer. If the names on that list are people of importance, you will have your protection.

Again, Bannic smiled. You got a deal. The first and foremost name on that list is Steve Collier. You know Director Collier. The Director in charge of Research and Technology.

Rick knew that when Collier's name was mentioned, Hobbs would send a security detail to protect him. It didn't matter if it was a hoax or not. The Wilson Corporation learned long ago not to disregard any death threats. Too many executives ended up dead because the dangers were not taken seriously.

What Rick needed to do now was to find out if the threat was real or not. So, tell me, how did you come by this information?

Well, I told you my name but not my title. I am the Under-Director of Finance and Economic Growth for the Rossom Corporation.

Rick needed to ensure Bannic knew he was in charge of this negotiation. I’m impressed, but not overly so. What has this got to do with you being in my interrogation room?

Well, in short, I'm a glorified bookkeeper. I saw some things that I shouldn't have. When I asked the Director about it, I was told to keep my nose out of his business. I just couldn't let it go, so I did some digging on my own. I got the answer I was looking for but also realized I had to get out of there. Knowing that Wilson was the target, I came here to exchange the information for my safety.

So far, all you have given me is one name. Give me the list and prove it's real, and I'll give you a new life.

Bannic reached up, pulled a button off his shirt, and set it on the table. You have a deal. That disk has all the information you need. You must understand I'm a bookkeeper. Meticulous attention to detail is what I do by my nature.

Rick reached over, picked up the disk, and then looked at Bannic for a reaction. You know we will have to verify this.

Take your time, but I wouldn’t take too much time if I were you. Some of the people on that list might have already met their fate.

Bannic looked like a man who had passed the burden onto another. It was almost a look of relief. Rick didn't want to seem overanxious as he slowly walked out.

He hurriedly went down the hall to the surveillance room and closed the door behind him. Rick knew that Hobbs would be watching the interview. He entered the room and saw Hobbs sitting behind the desk, watching the monitors. He came and stood behind him.

Hobbs looked over his shoulder and said, I’ve already sent a security unit to Collier’s house. He held out his hand as if to ask for the disk. Do you think he is telling the truth?

Rick dropped the disk in Hobbs's hand. Watching Bannic, he answered absently, Truth is for philosophers. I deal with facts. I'll know more when we check his facts. Still, I can tell you that he believes in what he is saying.

Not that I disagree with you, but why do you say that?

Because as I walked into the room, he looked worried. Once I made the deal, he already felt like we would protect him. So, he must believe the data is valid.

Right. Hobbs got up and started to head out the door as he said, I better get this to the boys in the tech lab.

Rick followed Hobbs out the door. Sir, I would like to join the security unit going to Collier’s house.

Why would you want to do that? said Hobbs.

Because perhaps I could see something others would miss.

If you think you could be of help, go. I'll have your vehicle unlocked for restricted destinations. Head for the Riverside sector. By the time you get there, you will be able to access Collier's house.

    What about Bannic?

As they arrived at the lifts, Rick pushed the button down as Hobbs pushed the one to go up. Let him sit. We'll know what to do with him soon enough.

The lateness of the hour caused both lifts to arrive simultaneously. Good luck, said Hobbs as he stepped into the lift and was gone.

Rick didn't have a chance to respond. He got into the lift and headed down. He thought something wasn't right; still, he had to act on the information.

Rick got into his car and said, Riverside Sector, please.

Access denied. Riverside Sector is accessed by invitation only.

Then would you please take me to Green Sector? The vehicle lifted off and started heading in that direction without further comment.

The Riverside Sector is where the rich and elite live. The CEO and all members of the Board of Directors resided in Riverside, along with the CEO and Directors of most subsidiary companies that made up the Wilson Corporation.

The Green Sector was a short distance from Riverside, but security was not as tight. Mid and lower-level executives populated this sector. It was not shabby like the worker's sectors, but it was crowded. Lovely homes had just the land they sat on. Streets were just a few paces away from the front door. There was little to no crime, so there was no real reason for security.

Rick was not in flight for more than two minutes when he got a call from Hobbs. He put the earpiece on and Tapped the answer button. Yes, Sir.

I’m sending you the information on the disk, said Hobbs.

    That was quick.

Yeah, it didn't have an encryption code or even a password.

    I guess he wasn’t joking.

No, he wasn't. I've been able to sift through some of the data. At this point, I need to determine whether it is factual. However, I did get the list of targets. We are getting them all into custody now. It looks like Rossom is trying to take out our key tech research personnel.

Rick thought about that, That has a logic to it. We are rivals in many R and D projects. Can you tell me what they were working on so I can discover why these particular people were targeted?

That's classified. I don't even have access to that information. Hobbs seemed like he couldn't understand it, either.

What? You are on the Board of Directors. How is it that you don't have access? This made Rick's anxiety grow.

Because CEO Nash classified it. His eyes only. He didn't sound happy about it, but it was how the game was played.

So, I’m going into this situation blind. No reason and no support.

Yes, you are. Here is the thing, I didn’t just tell you that. If Collier tells you what he is working on ...

If Collier gave Rick the information, then no one could be blamed. Yes, Sir, I got it. He had just gotten a small insight into Hobbs. He was a man that was interested in seeing justice done. It wasn't that he was willing to break the law, but he was ready to bend it just a little.

Go over the material from the disk and see if you can find any clues. Your vehicle should be unlocked to go to Collier's house. Contact me when you find something.

One of the things Rick liked about Hobbs is that he was not a wordy person. He was concise and to the point. You always knew where you stood with Hobbs. Yes, Sir.

    Hobbs out.

As soon as the call had ended, the car said, You have been given access to #4 Colony Drive Riverside Sector. Would you like to go there now?

Yes, please. Rick thought the car was polite and that he should return the favor for some reason. It was silly, he knew, but it was how he was brought up.

Changing course. Flight time will be fifty-three minutes. Would you like to hear some music?

No, thank you. Would you please show the computer screen? Display the information sent to me by Director Hobbs.

Between Rick and the windshield, a holographic screen appeared. On the screen, there were three folders. One was marked 'Hitlist,' another was marked 'Personal,' and the last was named 'Financials.' Hobbs had already seen the hit list, so it was not a top priority. So, he opened the financial folder first. At once, he was inundated with thousands of files. Would you please organize the files by date modified?

    Yes, said the car.

Thank you. While the files were being organized, Rick opened the personal folder. It had one file in it. It was named Rick Thompson. Rick couldn’t understand why the Rossom Corporation had a file on him. He felt that he was not truly important enough to have gotten the attention of other corporations. Yet here was a file on him. Reluctantly he opened the file.

He was stunned to find that Rossom had an in-depth record of his life where he went to school. The friends he had. His marriage and the reasons for the divorce. This file showed what he did and why he did the things he did. Everything. In an exact detail of his life. He didn’t want to relive things, so he jumped to the last page.

It read, 'Conclusion,' this is an honest man with personal integrity. Do whatever is necessary to recruit him.'

The only thought that came to mind was the one thing they left out; he was loyal.

Even though he was shocked, Rick set the folder aside. And he started looking at the financials, starting with the most current one. He was amazed that Bannic kept such highly detailed records. With that fact in mind, he found it very strange that he would discover blanks occasionally. A payment to an account number with no other information given. No name or reason for the payment. For these records, that was out of place.

Bannic was either ordered to do it or didn't know about it. In both cases, that pointed to the CEO of Rossom, Jeff Ridges.

Rick went through all the records looking for blank spots. Over the last four years, the only empty areas went to the same account. He was shocked to discover that over two billion credits were sent to that account in that time frame.

Whom did the money go to, and why? Rick's cynical mind went into overdrive. That amount of money could pay for a sizeable covert operation. If it was a clandestine operation, why the assassinations, and why now? Rick had the last thought as the car came in for a landing.

As Rick got out of his car, a man in a military uniform came up to him. Mr. Thompson. My name is Jim Brown. I was given orders from Director Hobbs. You are to take charge of this situation.

All right, is the perimeter secured?

Yes, Sir, Sentries are posted every thirty meters, and motion detectors surround the house.

Great, keep an eye out. It sounded good, but Rick wasn’t sure if it would keep out a guild assassin.

Yes, Sir. Brown turned and went back to his post.

Rick turned and got his first look at the house. Somehow the word house didn't fit the fortress he was now facing.

His car set down right in front of the marble steps leading to the front door. He went up the steps and rang the doorbell. Almost at once, the door was opened. Before Rick could say anything, the butler said, Mr. Collier is expecting you, sir. Hobbs must have let Collier know that he was coming.

If this was Collier's servant, he could be trusted up to a point. In a situation like this, Rick didn't trust anyone. You know what is going on?

    Yes, Sir, I do.

Good. Please protect the family. Get them as far away from the Director as possible. It’s for their protection.

Yes, Sir, and Mr. Collier? The butler seemed genuinely concerned for Collier’s safety.

I’ll protect him. Just make sure the family stays safe. Now go.

Very good, Sir. He is in the sitting room just beyond that door. He pointed to a door just off to Rick's right and headed off to do as he was told.

Rick knocked on the door and went in. As soon as he entered the room, he was amazed at how stupid; influential people could be. Half of the room had plate glass windows from floor to ceiling.

Collier was looking out the window with a glass in his hand. It was a beautiful view of the gardens and pool. However, with an assassin on the loose, it was extremely dangerous.

Director! Get away from those windows. Rick moved to close the curtains.

With the darkness outside and light in the room, Rick saw a reflection of someone coming into the room. Somehow, he felt danger. He turned and flung himself at Collier.

The bullet meant for Collier hit Rick's back as they tumbled to the ground. He heard laser fire from several directions as he protected Collier with his body.

Rick could do nothing. Yet he heard someone ask Collier if he was all right. The voices seemed more distant, and everything went black.

    Chapter 2 Revelation

Rick woke in a gray room, wondering how he got there. It took a few moments for his mind to climb out of the muck of sleepiness. That's right; he was shot. This must be a hospital.

He felt the pain in his back and remembered that he was trying to save Collier. It was a stupid thing to do, putting himself between Collier and the bullet. Yet it was his job to keep Collier alive.

He was on his side. A position that he felt was unnatural, but the pain in his back would not let him roll over. He reached out to touch his back, and a nurse came in and interrupted the process.

Well, Mr. Thompson, you are awake. The door was behind Rick; as the nurse spoke, she came around the bed to face him.

How long have I been out?

Only about twelve hours. It’s mid-afternoon. You were fortunate. The bullet didn't hit any vital organs. This was a beautiful nurse. Rick thought he was lucky in more ways than one.

So, it’s nothing more than a flesh wound? Rick meant it to be funny.

Well, I wouldn't say that. You need to take it easy for a few days. She reached over and took his wrist. She held it for a few moments as she looked at her watch.

The touch of her warm hands sent a chill down his spine. That chill stopped as it hit the pain in his back. Don’t the machines tell you what you need to know? said Rick to get away from the feeling of attraction.

Yes, the machines can tell me almost everything, but I still prefer the human touch.

So did Rick, but to get away from the subject, he asked, When do I get to go home?

I'm sure the doctor will want to keep you overnight for observation, but that's up to him. By the way, you have someone that has been waiting to see you. Do you feel up to company?

    Sure, why not.

The nurse went to the door and said, He's awake now; you can come in.

Regardless of the pain, Rick rolled over onto his back to see who was coming to visit him.

In walked Director Collier. Well, I’m glad to see you are doing better.

What happened, Sir? The last thing I remember was throwing myself at you. Rick was at a loss regarding the events that put him in the hospital.

To start with, you saved my life. Thank you for that.

You’re welcome, but how did that happen.

It seems like one of the guards saw someone slip into the front door. He followed them into the house and heard a gunshot. The guards got to him before the assassin could get to me.

I don’t understand, said Rick. How did the assassin get onto the property?

The evidence points to the fact that he showed up with you.

Me? That was so preposterous. Rick couldn't even see how they could even jump to that conclusion.

Calm down, said Collier. We don’t think you had anything to do with it. Hell, you saved my life. If you were involved, you wouldn’t have taken a bullet for me. No, we found straps under your car. It looks like he got under your car and strapped himself to the bottom. As your car had clearance to go through the barrier, it gave the assassin a free pass.

Rick was stunned. I’m sorry I didn’t know.

How could you? Sargent Brown confirms that you were the only one inside the car when it arrived. The barrier recorded access to two people as it allowed your car through.

The phone on the nightstand started to buzz. Rick looked at it and saw that it was Hobbs. That's my boss. Do you mind if I take this?

No, go ahead. I'm sure that Hobbs is just as concerned about you as the rest of us.

Rick reached over and put the earpiece in his ear. Hello.

Rick, listen to me carefully; I need you to give me yes or no answers.

Yes, Sir. Rick wasn't sure what this was about, but he was convinced it had to do with Bannic, and Hobbs wanted to keep a tight lid on the subject.

    Is Collier there?

    Yes, Sir.

Good. Now I want you to get a grip on your emotions when I tell you this.

    Yes, Sir.

Some hikers found Collier’s body in the forest this morning.

Yes, Sir, said Rick in even tones just like he had with every other answer.

Until we know what the imposter is after, we will let this play out. Do you understand?

    Yes, Sir.

Don't let him know we are on to him; there is no telling what he might do. Call me after he leaves.

Yes, Sir. Rick tapped the earpiece to end the call. He took it out of his ear and set it on the nightstand. So, where were we?

I was telling you that you couldn’t have known. Anything important from Hobbs?

No, he was just telling me the same things you told me.

I see. Well, I just wanted to come by and thank you for saving my life. I must be going; I have places to be and things to do. You take care of yourself. We need men like you.

Thank you, Sir. Rick watched Collier go. He wanted to reach for the phone but thought better of it. He wanted to make sure that Collier was gone before he called Hobbs.

As he got out of bed, he could feel where the bullet had entered his body. His back was sore in general but extremely painful in one spot. Rick had never known pain like this before. He stood and felt like he was going to pass out.

Totally disregarding his body, Rick went to the window. He was glad to see that Collier and his security attachment entered his car. Now he could call Hobbs without fear of being overheard.

Rick heard a voice behind him, watching the car take off and fly away. Just what do you think you are doing out of bed!?

Rick turned to see a man in a white lab coat and a clipboard in his hand. He already knew the answer, but he thought he would ask anyway. And you are?

I'm your doctor, now get back into bed, or I'll have an orderly put you there.

Stiffly Rick headed for the bed, refusing any help. As he sat down, he said, Well, Doc, what's the verdict?

The doctor looked at the clipboard and said, We removed the bullet from your back. He said, I'm surprised they still use the old lead throwers. He paused a moment reading the data. Well, I just got back the results. The stem cells and tissue regen cells we put into you last night have taken hold. The subcells ...

Rick interrupted something the doctor must believe was interesting, but Rick did not. Doc, simple language. What’s the bottom line?

If there are no complications, you can go home in the morning. You have lost a lot of blood, so you need to drink as much water as you can. The doctor looked up from the clipboard. Any questions?

    No.

Okay, I have rounds to make. I'll see you in a little while. With that, the doctor left.

Rick looked at the nightstand and saw all his personal possessions. He reached over, grabbed the phone earpiece, put it into his ear, and called Hobbs.

The phone rang once. Rick, good. I take it that Collier has left?

Yes, Sir. When I told him you called, I think he stayed to see what you told me.

What did you tell him about our call? Hobbs seemed a little nervous.

Well, he was telling about the events of last night when you called. After the call, I said that you told me basically the same thing he did.

    Did he seem suspicious?

I don't think so, as everyone is centering their attention around me. After we got off the phone, Collier went to his car and left the hospital.

Good, said Hobbs. We are keeping a tight lid on this one. Once the imposter finds out, we don’t know what he will do. On a different subject, do you know when they will release you?

Doc said that I should be good to go in the morning.

Really? Hobbs sounded surprised. Okay, this is what I want you to do. As soon as they let you go, I want you to start an investigation on Collier. You and I are the only ones that should have access for now. Find out what he has been doing for the last three months.

    Why the last three months?

Because that is how long the medical examiner believes the real Collier has been dead.

Do we know for a fact that the dead man is the real Collier?

Yeah, we are sure it was the real Collier. The DNA is a 100% match of what we have on file. We also recovered his location chip. It's the real Collier, all right.

That made Rick wonder. If he had a locational chip, why didn’t we know about this before now?

It was damaged in the fall. Look, I’ll send you all the information on the crime scene. Right now, you need to get some rest. You had a tough first day on the job.

What about Bannic and his information?

What about him? said Hobbs. He sounded like he was no longer interested in Bannic.

Somehow, my gut tells me that there is more to it than we know. I feel that there has to be a connection.

Well, go with whatever your gut tells you. Report to me as soon as you get out of the hospital.

    Yes, Sir.

    Hobbs out.

Rick took the phone out of his ear, and his mind started to race. Too many questions with no answers in sight. He began to organize his thoughts.

First off, The information from Bannic. Whom did that account number with the blank space belong to? More importantly, what was it used for? He was sure it would end up at the Assassins Guild on Tarsis if he followed the money trail. But whoever it was couldn't have spent that much on assassins. So, where did the rest of the money go?

If they had replaced Collier with a fake, why did they send an assassin after him? If they weren't aware that the real Collier was already dead, two groups were involved. Another question came to mind. How did the assassin know that Rick was going to Collier's house?

Rick heard a buzzing from his datapad on the nightstand. He pulled it out from his other possessions. On the screen was a note from Hobbs.

Here is the information on the crime scene. I'm sure your head is spinning with all the questions. I know you won’t but try to get some rest. There is nothing that can't wait until tomorrow. Let me know what you find. Hobbs.

Rick smiled. Hobbs was starting to know him too well. There was information on the crime scene and all the information on the data from Bannic. What surprised Rick was that Hobbs also sent him information on Collier for the last six months.

He opened the report on the body found in the woods. That, at least, was an actual crime. It was more like what he was used to investigating. As he read through the report, Rick felt something wasn't adding up.

According to the report, the body was badly mangled as it fell through the trees. The M.E. estimated that the fall was from a height of about two kilometers. The assumption was that he was pushed out of a moving car.

The weather, time of year, and state of decomposition pointed to the fact that the body had been there for three months, if not a little longer.

The body was positively identified as Collier by the DNA sample and the tracking chip put into all members of the Board of Directors. If that was the case, Rick wondered if the fake Collier had a chip. And how did he get one? The report brought to mind more questions than it answered.

Rick set that aside for the moment. There were too many questions that could not be answered right now.

He pulled up the report on Collier's activities for the last six months. It detailed his actions, business dealings, and movements until about three months ago. That was when he was assigned to the tech project under CEO Nash, known only as 'The Ghost Project.' No other information was given, and the name was only used once.

From that point forward, there was a lot of missing information. Days and even sometimes weeks were missing from Collier's daily activities timeline. There was no way to know when he got replaced. There was no way of knowing what Collier did or where he went.

Rick had no way of knowing, but his assumption was that the 'Ghost Project' was a black weapons project. There was no other explanation for that level of security. Of course, Rick could be wrong, but that theory fits the fact at hand.

A thought struck him. Rick asked the datapad, Do I have access to the network of the Wilson Corporation?

    Yes.

    Thank you, Hobbs.

I do not understand the request.

Rick was about to explain himself but gave himself a mental shake. Give me access to the tax records, please, for Director Collier for the last six months.

    Working.

Please display on-screen oldest first. Rick wasn't exactly sure what he was looking for, but he was confident he would find a clue in these records.

As he started going through the data, Collier's accounts looked normal. Expense accounts, business trips, and so forth. As Rick came forward in time, he came across a trip to Pacifica with Collier's family. That happened just after he was assigned to the 'Ghost Project.' Two and a half weeks later, he went back to Pacifica. And again, and again. He went to Pacifica about every ten days over the last three months. Every time he went, he would be there for one day, then he would come back to Anteagan.

A theory was developing in Rick’s mind. Collier was targeted because of the Black project. It was a guess that he was replaced while on Pacifica while on the family vacation. That was a working theory, but now the trick was being able to prove it.

Rick promised himself at the beginning of his career that he would follow where the evidence led. Never hold onto a theory if the evidence points in a different direction. At this moment, Rick had reason to suspect Collier and reasonable evidence to investigate him.

His thoughts were interrupted as he heard a voice at the door. What are you doing?

The nurse was just coming into the doorway with a tray of food.

    Honestly, Rick answered, Working.

In a stern tone, she said, You are supposed to be resting.

Rick smiled at her attitude. I haven't moved from this spot, so technically, I am resting.

The nurse gave a disapproving look as she set the food down on a table. She rolled the table in front of him and took the datapad out of his hands. You need to eat, she said as she put the pad on the nightstand within Rick's reach. Then she added, You can have that back when you are done.

Once Rick started eating, he found he was hungrier than he thought. Yet the nurse stood over him like a mother making a child eat their vegetables.

Wow, this is great, said Rick between bites. I always heard hospital food was bland and tasteless.

It is, but that is not hospital food. There was a smile on her face.

What? Rick couldn’t understand why a nurse would bring him food from the outside.

That’s from Genos, one of the best restaurants in the area.

    I don’t understand?

Well, the head administrator is Dr. Weller. He had an eight-year-old son that was abducted.

Rick put two and two together. There was a child named Weller on the list of victims. He seemed to recall that child's father was a doctor. I see.

The staff has been given orders that you be given the best care available. She paused a moment, I'm not supposed to tell you this, but Dr. Weller is paying for your care out of his own pocket.

We’ll see about that. Corporate law provides for my care if I’m hurt in the line of duty.

I really wish you wouldn’t do that. Dr. Weller is a proud man. I think it is the only way he can repay you for all you have done.

It was a matter of exchange. Rick's medical bills could easily come to a hundred thousand credits. For the Corporation, that was a small amount. For a private citizen, that was a hefty sum.

The fact that Weller was willing to pay this showed Rick just how much he appreciated what Rick had done for Weller's son. Would you please tell Dr. Weller, thank you?

I don’t think that would be a good idea. He is kind of like one of those candies. You know, crunchy shell on the outside and soft in the middle.

Rick smiled, Yeah, I know the type. By the way, what is your name?

Nancy Weller. But you can call me Nurse Nancy.

    Rick was stunned, "You...?

He is my dad. And I want to personally thank you for what you did for my little brother. I know he can now rest in peace.

Rick didn't know what to say to that. So, he said the only thing he could think of was, Your welcome. He finished eating, and Nancy took the table away. She handed him the datapad and said, Do try to get some sleep. I know you won’t but try anyway. Then she turned and left the room.

Why did everyone keep saying that? Thought Rick as he watched her go. The encounter left him with a strange feeling. He did what he did for the victims and their families. Rick did it because it was the right thing to do. He didn't do it for gratitude. To be rewarded for doing his job somehow didn't feel right.

Putting the thought out of his mind, Rick opened the files from Bannic. Starting with the mysterious account number. It showed up in accounts payable, but nowhere did it show up as anyone receiving the money. He thought about that. If it didn't show up in the Rossom records, that meant that the receiver had to be in some other corporation. That would have left a trail in the exchange rate. However, the only Corporation he had access to was Wilson.

Please access the money exchange with the Rossom Corporation for the last six months.

The data started downloading. Rick put the account number into the search engine. He was surprised that there was only one entry for that account. A total of 700,000 credits were exchanged with Rossom and were moved into an account that belonged to Director Collier. Something about the date of the transaction stuck in Rick’s mind.

Going back into Collier's expense records, the date of the transaction coincided with Collier's second trip to Pacifica. Where did the money go? He was sure that there was no way to track the personal spending accounts of a member of the Board without a 'writ of search.' And that would mean that Collier would know he was under investigation.

So, now the question was, how did the fake Collier take over Collier's life? How did he get a tracking chip that proved he was Collier? All the evidence pointed out that he was replaced just after the family vacation. Yet how was it that no one noticed?

It all came down to this. What was the project Collier was working on, and why was Rossom willing to kill to get it?

The one question that stuck out in Rick’s mind was if the fake Collier was an agent for Rossom, then why would they send an assassin to kill him? Too many pieces of the puzzle just didn’t fit into place. He had missing information. He was hoping that the missing data would link things together.

Rick was tired and could no longer think. He set everything aside and fell into a restless sleep.

    Chapter 3 Outpoint

Rick awoke as the nurse came into the room to check his vitals. Well, good morning.

She turned, and Rick saw that it was Nancy. I didn't wake you, did I? It seems that Nancy had taken a personal interest in his care.

Yes, but that’s all right. I didn’t sleep very well last night.

    Really? What is the problem?

Just restless, I guess. This seemed like Nancy had more than polite interest.

Do you usually have a restless sleep?

Rick thought that was a strange question. I guess that depends on how much I’ve had to drink. He thought it was a funny way to avoid the question.

It didn’t seem like Nancy was going to have any of that at the moment; she was all business. The reason I asked is that you were given a prototype treatment. I was asked to check and see if there were any side effects.

To answer your question. No, no side effects. I usually only have a restless sleep when I'm on a case.

Nancy smiled, I’m guessing that’s most of the time.

Yeah, I guess it is, he said with a smile.

The Doctor will be in shortly to check you out. Nancy turned and left the room.

Rick felt attracted to Nancy. Yet he wondered if it was because she was taking care of him or if it was a genuine feeling. At the moment, he wasn't sure, so he let the matter pass.

Within minutes the Doctor entered the room. Good morning. How are you feeling?

Rick honestly felt his body. He was surprised that he felt no pain or discomfort. I feel good.

Well, stand up and face the wall. I need to take a look at my handy work.

Rick got out of bed and was happy with the ease with which he did so. He did as he was told, and the Doctor unstrapped his gown. So, I need to check something. I'm going to touch your back, and I want you to tell me when you feel my finger.

As the Doctor poked in different spots, Rick acknowledged that he felt it. There seemed to be a long pause. The Doctor said, Can you feel that?

No, said Rick, not knowing what he was supposed to be feeling.

    I was afraid of that.

Afraid of what? Rick was growing alarmed.

Well, the process we used on you is highly experimental. In short, the nerves didn’t grow into the stem cell regen pack we put into your wound. Let me ask you this, do you feel any pain in or near the wound?

No. None at all. Can you tell me what you did? And please use simple words.

I’m going to assume you know what stem cells are. We put nondifferentiated stem cells into a regen gel. Of course, that’s an oversimplification, but the stem cells latch onto your DNA and accelerate the healing process. The concept was designed for soldiers on a battlefield. You are the first civilian to receive this treatment. As I see it, you will have a numb spot on your back, but you are perfectly healthy.

Am I good to go back to work?

The Doctor laughed and said, You are good to go to war.

Rick smiled. With my job, that might not be too far from the truth. They both laughed.

Get dressed. Go sign your paperwork and get out of here. We got sick people that need your bed.

Yes, Sir. And the Doctor left the room.

As Rick dressed, he thought about all the information he had learned over the night just passed. As an investigator, he didn't like it when things didn't add up. He knew early on who committed the crime; in most cases, he worked. The trick was to build a case and prove it. He was wrong every once in a while, but he always followed the evidence.

With this incident, Rick wasn't even sure what crime had been committed. All he had was some speculation and a few facts. He also had the gnawing feeling that time was against him.

After getting dressed, Rick went to the nurse's station and signed the release forms. He noticed the name of the attending physician was Dr. Weller. Now he understood his treatment and why a civilian was given military treatment. Nancy said that he was to be given the best care available.

As Rick finished the paperwork, a young man came up and said, Are you Rick Thompson?

    Yeah, who are you?

The name Jensen sir, Director Hobbs told me to come to pick you up.

    Where are we going?

To the Legal Administration Building. Your car has already been brought there.

Thank you. They walked in silence as they made their way to the car. Jenson stopped and opened the door to one of the enormous limousines. This was the type of car reserved for Directors and very wealthy businessmen. It dawned on Rick that Jenson must be Hobbs's personal driver.

Rick climbed into the back seat and pulled out his datapad. There was still a lot of data to review. Hopefully, the missing pieces were in there somewhere.

Before Rick knew it, the car had stopped. Jenson said, We are here, sir.

Jenson got out and opened the door for Rick. He started to go into the building and was followed by Jenson. Rick stopped and looked at the young man to ask why you are following me. Before he could say anything, Jenson said, With respect, sir, I was ordered by Director Hobbs to escort you into the building.

Well, then lead the way. As Rick followed Jenson in, he noticed extreme security measures. Yet it was odd that no one stopped him. They bypassed all the security without anyone saying a word.

In the center of the main lobby was the information and reception desk. Hobbs was standing by the desk, talking to the receptionist. She nodded in Rick's direction, and Hobbs turned to see Rick.

Hobbs came over and shook Rick’s hand, and said, Good to see you up and around. Let me show you to your new office.

Rick followed Hobbs to the lift. Sir, there is something I don’t understand.

Not here; we'll talk in your office.

There was nothing said on the lift. The doors opened, and Hobbs walked a short way down the hall, opened a door with a card key, and handed it to Rick. This is your new office.

Hobbs went to the desk and pulled a small object out of his pocket. He pressed a button, and a flashing red light showed that the device was in operation. Now we can talk.

    What is that thing?

It's a jammer. It handles any device that is trying to spy on you. As we are dealing with a Director, you can't be too careful.

Rick nodded; he understood why such precautions were necessary. What I don't understand is, if Rossom planted Collier, why did they send an assassin to kill him?

That is one of the things you will have to figure out. Do you have any leads?

Rick found it frustrating that Hobbs put it back on him. Still, Hobbs probably didn't have
