INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the world of NFTs (non-fungible tokens)! It has been difficult, if not nearly impossible, to escape hearing about NFTs. They are the most talked about addition to the crypto and blockchain worlds. As with many new things, there is plenty of information and misinformation floating around, which can make it difficult to be sure about what is true and what is just noise. One thing we know for certain is that billions of dollars have entered the NFT market. This explosion of investment activity, and what it could mean, is what we will explore in detail. This exploration will also include us visiting, learning about, and connecting the sister worlds of NFTs; the metaverse and crypto gaming. In addition, I have also included my personal experience with creating NFTs near the end of the book.

The current opinions on NFTs are just as diverse as what we heard in the even earlier days of cryptocurrencies. Some believe NFTs are idiotic, a waste of money, and just horrible for the environment. No surprise, there are others who say NFTs are the future of the internet and that they should be included in your investment portfolio. These fans see NFTs as a way to own a part of Web3*, which according to them, is also the future of the online world. I can promise you we will explore this new world without hype, and by the end, you will clearly understand how NFTs may be of benefit to you and what traps to avoid.

* Web3 is the next or third generation of the internet, it is based on blockchain technology and token-based economics. It is still very new and the final definition of Web3 might change after this book is published.

Before we dive in

Before diving into NFTs, there is the assumption that you have some basic understanding of blockchains and smart contract concepts. While NFTs are new, the technology that is being used to create them is not. Therefore, it is important that you understand these underlying concepts. If you have read any of my other books on blockchain technology, then you will be fine. If you have not read my other books, or if you have and you need a refresher, please read the section, The blockchain & smart contract cheat sheet before beginning (it is only a couple pages). I did not want to place it at the front of the book to slow down those already familiar with these concepts.
