Road to Nowhere
By Mags Hayward
The windscreen wipers swept back and forth, their efforts futile against the deluge. What started as spots of rain dotting the windscreen had developed into a full-blown meteorological onslaught, far more savage than the light to moderate April showers forecast on the radio. The rain hammered down and a violent wind battered the hedgerows, bending branches low over the road. Foliage was torn from the trees and tossed asunder. It caught in the wipers and scraped arcs across the windscreen, scratching the glass.

She scoured the roadside for landmarks but saw nothing beyond the overgrown hedgerows and wind ravaged trees.

The tarmac was patchy, grass growing where it had cracked and crumbled away. Crater-sized holes made driving a bone-shattering experience. Stella
