CHAPTER 1
38921.pngHOW THE PROBLEM STARTED
It all started at the famous prison on the moor of Dartmoor. The prison was notorious, filled with male criminals convicted for their terrible crimes and serving long sentences. When the prison was visited by a member of the royal family, the newspapers published a big report about it with her picture, and she was interviewed by the television reporters.
A group of men in the prison were determined to work out how to escape. When they were not being observed by authorities, such as one of the prison officers, they formed a gang and called themselves the Violent Pistols. The leader of the gang was called Jack, and he thought it was a big responsibility for him. He was probably right.
Anyway, when they had the opportunity, they met in private, where none of the prison officers could hear and came up with a cunning plan to escape at the right time. They figured the best time would be when they were taken out somewhere for the hard physical labour they were required to do.
Finally the day came for the Violent Pistols to put their plan in motion. Once outside the walls of the notorious prison, they struck and overcame the officers present. They all jumped into the vehicle they’d come in and drove away.
After their escape, the Violent Pistols became very active. As there was no way for them to get by with any law-abiding occupation, they began earning vast amounts of money by breaking the law. But they were such an incredibly greedy bunch of criminals, they wanted even more. So looked for another way to build their wealth.
CHAPTER 2
38921.pngTHE FIRST LOVE
Archibald Fiennes worked as a farmworker on a very desolate farm in the high and remote Dartmoor Highlands of Devon. It was a dark, cold, mysterious place, enshrouded in mist and bad weather. The locals believed the moors and a nearby vacant house were haunted by ghosts from the mine where some men had met a gruesome death. So the locals were reluctant to go up on the moors for any reason. The handsome young man called Archibald Fiennes came from his singular cottage on the moor near the mansion where Lord Welby lived.
A young, pretty woman called Kelsey worked at the mansion along with her friend Rachel, doing all the cleaning and tidying tasks. Kelsey was a good friend of Archibald, and they chatted with each other when they had a chance. Kelsey also had a boyfriend from the nearby village, whom she would see when she had the time.
One day Kelsey got hold of Archibald and said, Archibald, I have something important to tell you.
What is that then, sweetheart?
Archie, I am pregnant!
Wow, that is good news! Is it not?
Kelsey said, Yes, you idiot! I just wanted to tell you as you are my friend.
They were really happy about it and tried to make plans for the future for her and the father.
In the meantime, Archibald went to work on the farm as usual every day, bringing in the crops, as it was that time of year, September and harvest time.
Lord Welby’s daughter from his first marriage, Gloria Welby, was just going on her late-summer holiday to the Caribbean. Archibald would miss her for two weeks. He was madly in love with her but had not yet plucked up the courage to tell her. Gloria took a taxi and then a train to the airport and got the plane to the Caribbean. The woman Archibald was in love with had left him alone for a fortnight. All he could do was knuckle down and get on with the jobs around the farm.
Without Gloria at the farm, the two weeks went by slowly. But eventually Gloria returned, happy and tanned from a fortnight of sun. Archibald was ecstatic to see her again—until he found out that she had a new boyfriend, someone she had met on holiday. The young man lived near the village and occasionally came to the farm to see her.
Naturally Archibald was pissed about it. Oh, bollocks!
he said when he first heard the news. I thought I was in line for the role.
Perhaps a relationship with Gloria was impossible for him after all.
So he thought about it. Perhaps he could come up with a plan to get rid of the new boyfriend—get him accused of some shoplifting or something. Yeah, he thought, I’ll try that one for starters! So he followed him into town and slipped a valuable watch into his pocket when he didn’t notice. Then Archibald called the local police to tell them that he had seen a dodgy bastard
stealing something in the shop. The police quickly turned up, got hold of him, and said, You have been accused of theft.
They searched him, found the watch in his pocket, and arrested him. So that was that! Success for Archibald.
Archibald plucked up courage and told Gloria that he had seen what was happening and reported it to the police. He expected her to be upset, and sure enough, she was. The man she had fancied was just a common swine and a thief.
Gloria finally realised that she also fancied Archibald. But he was just a common farmworker. She thought he was thick because he couldn’t even read and write. That was very wrong, and quite sad really.
Archibald thought about things he had to do, things that would impress Gloria and make her fall for him like a good old tonne of bricks. He was a strong farmworker lad, so how about ball-tossing at the local carnival or knocking off coconuts at the shy? Surely she would be impressed by that! And when he knocked off a coconut, which split open, he shared the news with her.
The Violent Pistols, that group of experienced and very rich criminals, were in the village too. Jack was still the leader. But now there was a second-in-command, a woman named Vikki. Their post-prison criminal activities had netted them £120 billion, stashed in suitcases in the back of four, four-tonne lorries. They also had two getaway cars.
However, they were a very greedy bunch of people who wanted even more money at their disposal. Once they realised that Lord Welby was an extremely rich man, they thought he might be willing to pay a large ransom for the release of his kidnapped daughter. So they decided to kidnap Gloria as she was on her way home from college.
So they put their operation in action. First, they had to do some reconnaissance. They hung around outside the college for a few days to get an idea of her schedule, including when and how she would leave for home. After gathering the necessary information, they put their weapons into their vehicle and drove off to intercept the taxi she always took home.
Jack pulled the car alongside the taxi carrying their target, forcing it off the road. The gang got out of the vehicle, and one of them shot the driver dead as a doornail. Then they forced Gloria Welby out of the taxi and into their vehicle. They quickly drove off before other motorists or the police noticed the taxi—and the dead body.
During their planning, the Violent Pistols had discovered an empty, desolate house. It was even rumoured to be haunted. Vikki had suggested it might be a good place to hold Gloria hostage until Lord Welby paid the ransom. So that’s where they drove and locked up Gloria.
Jack then called the rich Lord Welby. Look, we have your daughter. Pay us £10 billion, and we’ll release her safe and sound. All right?
After some deliberation, the father agreed. But he sensibly called the National Police Force and informed them of the situation.
But the gang had
