About this ebook
The Players' League, formed in 1890, lasted just that one season, and was owned in part by the players themselves. Led by John Montgomery Ward, the league boasted 90% of the stars of the established National League, who bolted not only for better wages but also to share ownership of the teams. The players were underfunded and had to turn to wealthy capitalists for much of their startup costs, including the new ballparks, giving them 50% ownership. What went wrong?
