Proclivity Mistaken Path - K.A. Marson

    CHAPTER 1

T he torrential storm overshadowed the city of London as James dodged the pelting hail and rain in the town as he ran various errands. He scurried to the Post office to pick up his mail, only hoping for an eight by eleven envelope from the patent department.

While in college, James was lucky enough to meet Rebecca. They crossed paths frequently, they intermingled among their peers at study hall and the library. They became best friends and dated for years in college. Although, their studies did not overlap since Rebecca was dedicated to the pre-med program and James studies were Electrical and Bioengineer.

Frequently, both involved in different outside activities and professions, however circling back with the same group of friends. On cloud nine, James charmed Rebecca with his overachieving, cheerful disposition on life. Rebecca felt he was the right one for her to spend the rest of her life with him. She was the most liberal among her friends and wanted to ask James to marry her. She felt he was a fabulous catch, so she popped the question, Will you marry me, James? He laughed, for he was getting ready to ask her for her hand in marriage, with a rather exquisite diamond of three carats and embellish white sapphires platinum ring. Finally, both graduated from the Ivy League University. Next, they were planning their wedding elopement.

Anxiously awaiting his approval letter for the patent and trademark department, he decided to keep himself busy. He went into the city to pick up a few things and to have lunch with one of his friends from college. He thought he would have to win over her parents. He purchased a gift for Rebecca’s parents to persuade them not to hate him if they eloped together.

A decadent warm weather weekend, James went to the outdoor mall. As he walked down the cobblestone path, he arrived at an antique shop, finding a unique mantel clock. He stood staring at it as if he was in a hypnotic trance. Questioning himself, could this appease Rebecca’s parents as a negotiable token? He purchased it anyway. It was a rare occasion, as he walked through a familiar avenue from his childhood past. Although he was paranoid, that he was hearing whispers and rumors of lingering stories of the City of London burnt to the ground and his parent’s murder. Years surpass the horrific memories, but unfortunately for James, the whispers of the event rehashed in his head. As he mimicked the same route of his childhood. His aunt and uncle tried to protect him from the traumatic event by taking him to Ireland for years. After all this time, he needed closure and shut the painful memories behind closed-door forever. At noon, he met up with Oliver, his college buddy, for lunch at the local pub.

Hey Oliver, my team and I are doing fantastic. My life has been one endowment gift after another. I have been fortunate. We are moving into an innovative world. After all the hardships we had to go through and the sacrifice. James chuckled.

Yes, the immeasurable grueling work, with late nights till mornings studying and writing papers. The only spare time we had for parties were two hours at the most Saturday nights. Oliver interjected.

The professors never told us college was just a muse to exercise our brains to experience rigorous challenges, so they prepared us for the real world. I have no regrets. Both laughed.

The reason I asked you here, Oliver, is that Rebecca and I are engaged to be married, James exclaimed.

What, this is fantastic news, James! Oliver screeched out.

We are planning to elope, however, just in case the family ratifies our plans of elopement. Well, by chance, would you be my best man at the wedding? James was humble towards his best friend. James had episodes of depression during their college years, and his friend picked him up to get him back on track again.

Of course, my friend, this is great news! Maybe you can introduce me to one of her friends. I am now officially a practicing physician intern with sleepless nights. I would not trade this for the world. Oliver bragged.

As they consumed their black coffee and sandwiches, Well, keep in touch and let me know when if the big date will arrange or if you are leaving for a surprise, Oliver exclaimed. Then both parted separate ways.

The following weekend, Rebecca went home to share the news with her family. She wanted to share her engagement with her parents. She contemplated if she was going to wait for James to join her within a day or two to break the news to her parents.

In the living room sitting by the fireplace, Rebecca’s father confided news, "We have noticed that you and James are rather close. We do not know if marriage was ever a topic of discussion. We do not want you to think we are in prying in your affairs. On the other hand, we are not trying to dissuade your relationship, Rebecca. This conversation is to expose you further to his past. There’s chattel from James’s past that your mother and I thought you should know about his life. Although we think he is charming with an astounding aptitude in technological architect designs. The British Intelligence department provided information to us that an unexpected twist to this man’s childhood. Nothing illegal, of course, on his behalf. Graciously, his uncle and aunt took him in with their ten children to live in Ireland in his younger years.

Fortunately, he received scholarships and a trust endowment to support him for his entire life. These funds paid for his boarding school in Scotland and the prestigious Ivy League University in London. In exchange, he calls his aunt and uncle his parents, with whom he lived until college.

Additionally, we need to share rumors of his family trauma that affected all of London. Unfortunately, his parents were murdered, which he has been forever silent to share with anyone. The intelligence service believes the attack was because of an Argentina coup who wanted to launder gold where James’s father was employed at the bank. Consequences for negating their plans and refusal to support or comply with the coup, result in their execution.

In addition, half of the City of London was burnt to the ground. Apparently, James lived in his home for a year in ashes and the remains of his home, by himself as a ten-year-old boy until the family took him to Ireland. One final note, James does not know who did this to his parents, Rebecca." Her father took a breath.

Seriously, there are rumors about this Argentina coup does not rest. Her father was sincere for fear this could drum up the past.

Shocked and heart-struck at his loss, Rebecca felt his experiences from his childhood were a devastating ordeal, which will stay buried deep within his soul alone. A topic she would never discuss. She told her parents regardless, she wanted to marry him.

Rebecca’s father interjected with concern, This obscure conversation will go no further from this room. We cannot let him know who was behind this either, do you understand?

She agreed, I will never reveal it to him or anyone.

Upon clearing the air, turning the depressed situation to surprise, they were going to marry. Her parents were elated and gave her their blessing. In the future, Rebecca expected it was not going to be a fairytale life. Their passion for expanding innovative global technology was challenging with anticipated obstacles.

They were excited to be united, James and Rebecca mysterious plan to elope suddenly were intercepted by her family. The arrangement to an extravagant wedding event was hijacked by hiring wedding planners and various administrators to derail their elopement.

After several months’ past, the big wedding day arrived. In the living room, Rebecca’s mother placed a sentimental headpiece, crown of diamonds, and pearls on her head. The dress her mother, grandmother, and Rebecca preferred was unanimous. Rebecca’s gown was a divine flowing white satin with a sweetheart neckline. The dress’s silhouette cascaded like a satin ball gown with a trim of pearls. For the ceremony, she wore a matching satin detachable cathedral train of six feet, a satin embroidery of lace, pearls, and Swarovski gems. She glowed in her wedding attire like a princess from a fairy tale.

On their wedding day, there were over three hundred out of four hundred attendees. An enchanting event that sealed them together forever, as they recited their vows consummated by their love, an unforgettable moment for all.

Alternatively, with Rebecca as his partner, life was a gift of perfection and pure bliss. Most people would only wish for what they both had together. As for their careers, both were icons in their science and computer engineering professions. His career kept him in London for a short while. Both intertwined in a healthy relationship connecting their hopes and dreams, which was complimentary as a strong union together.

    CHAPTER 2

M onths passed as newlyweds engrossed in their daily routines. James was ecstatic about his scientific breakthrough before becoming one of London’s most recognized technology gurus, preparing to expand their venture to New York. His team received many awards within his field of study. The city hosted galas for them as the projects took flight.

In the lab, James’s team worked never-ending nights, changing the sensory cap with receptors on computerized electronic brain interface modification with an implant microchip. This microchip would be place in a subject’s brain’s cortex to send wireless electronic messages through electrodes to an artificial intelligence robotic computer to communicate with a digital voice. Eventually, Logan wanted to change the microchip to be placed by invasive surgery anywhere in the body. They were still working on the intricacies of neuroscience within the microchip’s communication capacity. This robotic system received signals from the brain to automatically download the person’s thoughts to a computer interface controlling the artificial intelligence robot. The robot mimics the person’s actions and thoughts. Their vision boards’ next step was to potentially unlock the XR8 with new capacities linked to deoxyribonucleic acid, (DNA) to human cloning with an artificial intelligence robot. They called it Project XR8dna.

The company’s board privatized investors, and the data research department required monthly demonstrations and tours by James and Logan. During the team showing off the three simulations, the members stood over them, examining and taking notes.

For the first simulation, one employee volunteered. Colby connected to the computerized electronic communications brain interface with an internalized microchip they placed in his cortex region days before the event. This invasive surgery inserted the microchip to demonstrate the XR8 mental telepathic system interface, which supported the microchip telekinesis transporter. The second part to the process was the wireless transmitted connection to computer to communicate by telepathic brain waves to a machine. The interface translating into a digital voice for the aligned robot to speak.

As they began the tour, the members stood behind the glass window for the simulation show to begin. James and Logan offered them chairs for their viewing. Behind the glass were the employee, Colby, and the artificial intelligence robot mirroring a human five foot, seven inches of metal head and torso with plastic appendages to cover the motorized wires in the shape of arms, legs, and wires.

In the beginning, the XR8 robot stood erect then sat beside Colby in a chair. Simultaneously, they both got up. The XR8 robot mimicked all of Colby’s actions and thoughts. Colby read a section of War and Peace, and the robot chimed in the same. He scratched his nose as the robot mimicked the same. The observers cheered, in awe by this magnificent discovery they viewed. Colby unconsciously thought as the robot spoke all his thoughts.

Hey, they love us. He did not say a word. They all snickered again. James and Logan escorted the group to the next floor to view another simulation.

Directing them to another classified quarantine area, Logan explained, This project, XZ25, is computerized mental telepathy that downloads one’s thoughts to a computer hard drive converting into a text message or voice text message. We created a simulation for everyone to view. Here we have a volunteer employee, Richard, hooked up to a helmet cap with sensory wires and pads jetting out of it.

Similarly, Logan motion gestures to them to look up at a seventy-five-inch television screen.

As you can see what Richard is doing looking at you, it is a mirror image of his mental thoughts. The observers view themselves on a screen in awe. It amazed them as they took notes.

Now, I will have you view on the screen the subject’s daily activity that happened in his past twenty-four hours routine. On the keyboard, Logan inputted the date and time to search his activity from his memory. He typed in several dates into an enlarged keyboard.

Watch as you will see as I program by keying in on the keyboard, yesterday’s date, at ten-thirty in the morning, ending in thirty minutes.

They viewed what he did on the screen, including the parties he interacted with and his thoughts. The tour went on for a half-hour based on the volunteer’s memory. Then they showed a tape of what he did. It was from a different point of view, a video versus his brain’s interpretation and then raw memory to compare on the split screen. It was astoundingly similar.

As Logan explained in ordinary language, This helmet device attached to his head will communicate by transferring his thoughts to a computer interface system, reading his brain waves or mind’s short or long-term memories from the past or in the current moment. It depends on what we retrieve as the date and time from his memory. Even if he forgot, the system could find the information deep within his brain’s storage systems.

Logan reiterated, it can read both long and short-term memory. We can transfer this information to the text of what he is thinking vs. a video screen. Ultimately, we are upgrading this from a sensory cap to a microchip. Anyone wants to try it out?

No one volunteered. So hopefully, none of you have ever robbed a bank, because now we will know it and the details. I am just kidding, fellas. Once again, the investors were very impressed with their designs in both projects.

Next, they led the investors to the lab on the fourth floor, the final project. Logan explained, It is called the chat box432 or CHT432. As they swapped positions, James took the lead.

James modeled and explained, the purpose of this medical device for aphasic people who cannot vocally communicate. It is a sophisticated micro pad that adheres to the person’s head to transmit only the vocals they want to speak. It transmits as a computerized vocal transmitter for an aphasic person. This transmitter attaches as a microchip in which the person could communicate with them by a computerized voice, or we can change the tone to a human voice. We call this CHT432 for chatting with family or friends regularly.

They took a break of fifteen minutes and offered their guest water and snacks of fruit and finger sandwiches before proceeding onward. Rotating the members to the fifth-floor conference room, they sat around the elongated table. Logan and James stood at the front to continue their presentation with slides and various paraphernalia exhibits during the show.

As they finished, questions flooded the room, when can we start cyborgs? Where can we sign up?

Another man stood in the back. Excuse me, we want all three projects’ expansion brought to New York! Another investor stood up. We want this to go global!"

Many bids came in globally for the devices, XR8 robot, XR8dna, XZ25, and CHT432 projects. James thought his dream came true, to the promised land of the United States to expand their market and vision. James’s passion was for his device utilized for mute people to use the microchip and adhesive pad to communicate with the computer voice activation or text message so they could relay their thoughts to others.

James’s intentions and motivation were to invent technological advancement for positive purposes for humankind.

Logan elated, let’s pop the cork for champagne! James sarcastically whipped in the comment, So, Logan, no speech for us? They all laughed. James and a colleague celebrated that they were moving forward to the United States.

Rebecca was flexible to James’ flamboyant technical technology and scientific discoveries during the marriage that led to late hours in the lab. She felt deep within her heart that his technological and scientific research designs would affect both of their lives forever. Their careers encountered controversy for both God and man. Their heart and intention were to help humanity in the way they felt needed change. Her faith was vital in providing a new way of thinking, a potential shift to modified technological advancement in the future. Their careers guided them both toward a liberalized avenue.

The intensity of possibly leaving London stressed James. Nevertheless, he felt the move could provide him with a fresh start over in life. Unforeseen to the following route since James division would cultivate as an advanced branch or subsidiary in New York. They were elated at signing several contracts for the new expansion on their projects, leading them to globalize spin-off divisions. They did not know what to expect on the other side of the coin, except they would do this together. They were going to emerge together as a family.

Besides the topography change and enormous challenging adjustments, they supported each other through thick and thin. Although it was a stretch for Rebecca and her partner in New York with her ocular scan designs, they applied for a patent and trademark in the United States. She figured she might as well join James with the mindset to expand her division.

    CHAPTER 3

W hile the corporate comprehensive private jet carted twenty or more colleagues for approximately seven hours until they landed in New York. As the excitement filled the cabin on the airplane, Logan echoed one of his empirical speeches to boost morale. On arrival, darting in various directions, as they parted from the airport to their new homes. A fresh start for James and Rebecca, unsure of all the changes and challenges ahead.

The company’s infinite growth potential required them to outsource support with vested financial banks in the United States. In doing so, they reserved the rights to arrange James and his fellow employees with financial advisors and bankers for their project in the United States. This aligned the team with corporate and personal perks. Furthermore, a concierge organized their daily schedules, keeping their minds focused on their technological, scientific venture enterprise, which assessed value was worth billions. The expectations for this division were growth and prosperity globally.

The company indulged their employees, with living arrangement in cluster homes in Westchester County to cultivate together. They supported their families with doctors, decorators for their homes, vehicles to travel to and from work, psychologists for anxiety because of the transition to a new country. They provided family’s local agency contacts for au pairs for their children, local school information and after-school activities, gyms, and health and wellness classes. The three programmers were appreciative and thought all the genuine opportunism and plausible production on the four projects was overwhelmingly positive. Numerous contracts signed for the CHT432, XR8, XR8dna, and XZ25. They were expanding and fast. The three of them could barely breathe. Logan, Oliver, and James are responsible for the three monumental advancement projects.

The newest project, PZ1000, for telepathic movement with prosthetics, Oliver was managing as separate division. Their work seemed endless. The company thought they needed to employ more people to help advise them about their daily routines and organizational expansion compliances within laws and financial accounting, with procedures and the budget.

A financial advisor and banker assigned to James personally was Gabe Shames. As Gabe drooled at the profile of Mr. James and his fellow correspondences, they were primitive and new to the states. His company was eager to get his hands on the lucrative potential of James’s financing for his project. Gabe was in contact with James and his division before their move. Gabe figured he would arrange a smooth transition for the families and become their best friends, so he phoned James.

Hey James, how was your trip? Gabe was overly friendly, acting coy about when they expected to arrival.

Hey, old chap, I am managing well. I am here with my wife and daughter.

I prefer to greet you when you landed, my friend but waited a bit. Do you both want to have dinner in the city this evening or, better yet, there is a wonderful restaurant overlooking the Hudson? It has fabulous food and an amazing ambiance to relax.

Well, we have a bit of jet lag, and our daughter requires some attending to, you know, kids. We’ll have to take a rain check, but thanks. We are still working on the logistics mate, the movers, of course, our wonderful daughter. Well, we need to arrange a caretaker. James interjected concerns to Gabe. Gabe saved the day. Listen, I have a wife who needs to work, who is a great caretaker. Can we help you out?

James’s elated tone. Wow, you’re kidding, right? This is amazing. Rebecca would appreciate your significant gesture. I mean, let me check with her first. We will forward an invitation to you for dinner in our new home if it works out. Thanks, you are a lifesaver. I will get back to you and will see you next week.

It was a long drive in the limo from the airport. Their destination was to a new estate on a narrow path on a hill gated in with other homes.

The driver had the radio blasting, Princess Anne and someone carjacked her spouse, then there was an attempt on her life. INTERPOL and British national security report the criminals have been taken into custody.

The driver bursts out, Hey, you folks from England, I mean with your accent and all? Do you know the Princess? Like are you, neighbor?

James glanced at Rebecca, frustrated, Um, we are from London. However, we are not neighbors.

Katie interjected, What does kidnapping mean?

Rebecca just looked in the mirror at her daughter, who squatted in the back seat, with puzzlement. Well, dear, it is when a stranger takes you away.

Eventually, they arrived at their new stonewall, two-acre, Tudor-style house within a gated community. Driving up the driveway seemed like forever. As they
