Chapter 1
October 9, 2014 was an ordinary day for most people. But not for me. I was in math class sitting next to my best friend, Keesha. One minute I was looking at an equation Mr. Ryan had written on the board.
130-___ = 80
I was about to raise my hand to answer the question; math was an easy subject for me, but the next thing I knew, I was laying on the floor.
I remembered looking up at the ceiling and noticing that one of the light bulbs was out. Funny, I thought, I hadn’t noticed that during class. Mr. Ryan was standing over me, asking if I was all right, and Keesha was holding my hand.
Keesha must have noticed that I wet my pants because she covered me with her sweatshirt. I knew she was my best friend because this was her favorite sweatshirt, the one she saved her allowance money from the chores she did in her house, helping out with her younger brother, and changing the cat litter. This sweatshirt never left her shoulders. It took her less than a second to lay it over me, to shield me from embarrassment.
They helped me sit up. I noticed the rest of the class staring, all twenty-two pairs of eyes on me.
What happened?
I asked.
Not sure. But you’ll be fine,
Mr. Ryan assured me.
