Physician Assistant PANCE & PANRE - Kathryn Almquist

    Physicians Assistant

    Overview

The physician assistant (PA) is a key member of the medical team who works under the supervision of a physician and other providers.

The physician assistant student (PA-S) is preparing for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE). Upon completion of an accredited educational program, the PA-S is eligible to sit for the PANCE exam.

The certified physician assistant (PA-C) must be recertified every 6 or 10 years, depending on the year of your last certification. The PA-C is required to take the Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam (PANRE).

    Maintaining PA-C Certification (PANRE)

The six-year certification-maintenance cycle is divided into three two-year periods (five two-year periods for those now on the ten- year cycle)

During every two-year period, PA-C des- ignees must earn and log a minimum of 100 credits of continuing medical education (CME).

By the end of the sixth year (or tenth year) of the certification-maintenance cycle, PA-C designees must have also passed a recertification exam.

he PANRE is designed to assess gen- eral medical and surgical knowledge.

    Practice-Focused Component of the PANRE

There are choices when taking the PANRE. While 60% of the exam will cover the same general primary care content as PANCE, the remaining 40% can be directed toward more general questions focused on one of three areas:

    Adult medicine

    Surgery

    Primary care

This option gives the PA-C the opportunity to focus a portion of the exam on their specific area of practice, although primary care can still be chosen for a more general test.

No matter which option is chosen, the con- tent blueprint remains the same because it is still an exam based on general knowledge.

The score report and certification credentials received will not show focus on a specific area—all credentials are the same regardless of choice.
