Do you ever feel emotions you do not want to feel? You are jealous of a friends’ good fortune. You are angry but try to act as though you are not. You encounter someone who did you wrong years ago, and those ugly feelings come back. You are happy that someone who always seems to win finally loses. These are what I call messy emotions, and we all have them. As a Christian, you want to love the Lord with all your mind, but it keeps filling up with thoughts that do not reflect Christ’s love and purity. If you are like me, you try to muster up the strength to feel the right way, but it only gets worse. You confess and repent and think you are doing better only to find those emotions grow back like mold.
If a foul odor in your kitchen assaults your nostrils and you only spray perfume around, have you handled the problem? No. You must get rid of the source of the problem and then the smell will go away too. The same is true of your messy emotions. They do not exist in isolation. You may try to will your bad feelings away. You may ignore them. Maybe you deny they are there because you are ashamed of them. You may justify why those feelings have the right to be there. All this is just perfume, my friend. Again, your emotions do not exist in isolation. They are connected to beliefs and thoughts you may not even realize you have. Left unattended, these unpleasant or troubling feelings can affect relationships, hinder ministry, or become strongholds. Messy emotions provide an opportunity for growth in your relationship with God and with
