    Improbable - Bojan George

    Summary

In an attempt to aid Commander Thalia, Captin Magneus launches a rescue mission. But in the middle of the frantic space battle, few things go as planned. Now marooned himself, he must fight to survive on the wrong side of the planet while the battle rages above without his leadership.

Set in the richly described Earth 50,000 BC universe, and during the exciting Abraxian Wars, this new quick read, Improbable, provides insights and suspense at a breakneck pace.

    Frying Pan

Magneus opened his eyes and saw the sky dance in yellow. He knew those flashes all too well. He could tell that thousands of lives were lost as the ships' debris spiraled through space. What annoyed him was that he couldn't tell which ones were his. Just as he had that thought, a violent, raucous explosion shuddered before his eyes, and yet he didn't blink. He could only wonder if she was safe.

Then, he remembered Thalia's crash after the Baytorian betrayal. Now he was in the same situation as her. Instead of saving her, he now was stuck on the same stupid hunk of space debris.

His mind settled. Of course, she was safe.

Only when he came to his senses did he notice that he was lying on a rock, badly hurting his back. The force of the impact would be deadly for most, but not for Magneus. Grunting, he rolled to the side and tried to push himself up. The hurt was great, his resolve even greater.

Even though he was away from the violence above, he'd give anything to be in the skies instead of being stranded on an alien planet. He hated not being in control, and among the clouds, Magneus felt the most in control. The planet was desolate, the likeness of which Magneus has rarely encountered.

He couldn't place where among the stars it sat.

    Maybe near Pawaan, he wondered.

The strangeness of his new playground was more pronounced as Magneus surveyed his surroundings. Dominated by rocks and sand in one place, thick forests strewn across vast surfaces in others. The biosphere was peculiar, the air pungent, slightly acidic.

He tried using a peer-to-peer connection to one of his crewmates, Cadraeus, but he knew it to be in vain. He was too far away. Besides, he had a hunch that Cadraeus shared the destiny of one of his officers in Magneus' sight.

The man lay spread beside a rock, brain splattered by the sheer force of impact after they all crashed on this planet. Magneus couldn't quite remember how he got here but knew who to blame.

    To hell with the Abraxians.
