About this ebook

From the Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator of Last Stop on Market Street, this bilingual board book is perfect for on-the-go storytime—rain or shine!

A rainy-day city comes to life when a boy in his green frog hat splashes in puddles—“Hoppy, hoppy, hoppy!”—while an old man curses the “dang puddles.” Can the boy's smile turn the grumpy man's frown upside down? With brilliant cut-paper art and bold colors, ¡Lluvia/Rain! —a bilingual board book featuring a diverse cast of characters—is an extraordinarily simple yet sophisticated journey from feeling sad and gloomy to radiating happiness and joy.

Two very different attitudes about a rainy day collide in this delightful story.

In my opinion, this is a very good book. I like the plot of the story. In the beginning, the older man isn’t happy about the rain. For example, he says “Nasty galoshes. Blasted overcoat. There goes my hair…” The little boy however, is really excited for the rain. He gets to wear his green raincoat and boots, and frog hat. When the door man greets him, he says “Ribbit!” As the story continues the older rain becomes more negative and the boy becomes more positive. At the end, the boy and man exchange hats and the man changes his attitude and decides to enjoy the rainy day. I also like the illustrations in the story. I like how the pictures are very basic, using ordinary shapes instead of abstract images. It also portrays the emotions of the characters. For example, when the little boy runs after the man to give him his hat, the man looks angry and says “You?” The boy pretends to be him, putting on his hat, making an angry face, and saying “You!” This causes the older man’s expression to change into surprise. Finally, I liked the language of the book. It is very elementary, using one word phrases. It also uses idioms that most, if not all, people will know such as “Is it raining cats and dogs?”
