The Racer - Rock Forsberg
One
White sand blew up from the ground as Zane pushed hard on the accelerator, sending his antigravity Litec racecraft shuddering across the finish line.
Cheering his victory, a little kid held his mother’s hand and waved a chequered flag in the old stand, among a crowd of less than a hundred people.
The Litec Series was a local racing league that fed to the planetwide Amera League, and this was the most remote race of the season, out back in the small desert town of Katherine.
For Zane, it was a necessary step to galactic stardom. Ever since his father—a racing legend in his own right—had died four years earlier, antigravity racing had consumed the now sixteen-year-old phenom’s life.
Parking parallel to the side of the track, he hopped off the craft, removed his helmet, and tidied his messy hair.
‘Good work, Zane,’ said Renny, ‘blasting the records again.’
Renny Rona, a chunky human fellow with weather-kissed skin, ran the Rona race team with the help of his technical assistant, Ant, and Zane’s racing coach, Hermes.
His competitors sputtered to a stop beside them, churning up more dust, which tickled Zane’s throat and made him cough.
‘I’m just counting the days until the end of the season so that I can take it to the Amera League . . . at least they have proper pits.’
Renny pursed his lips. ‘Where do I get another racer like you?’
‘There’s no-one like me.’
‘Know that I support you moving ahead, but I need you until the end of the season—unless you can find me someone as good.’
‘You know I can’t do that. I’ll do this season, but once it’s over . . . then it’s Amera, and then the ARL.’
‘Patience,’ said Hermes. ‘You’re an exceptional racer for your age, but don’t get ahead of yourself.’
Hermes had once worked with Zane’s father, and had long since retired from the business. Now he coached Zane as a hobby. With his grey beard and his long grey coat, he would easily have passed for the wizard from the Lore of the Reigns.
‘I have to,’ Zane said. ‘I don’t want to be like Mr Shakespoke there, racing these buckets with kids half his age.’
‘Listen to me, young lad,’ said Renny, ‘I am fifty-five, and I enjoy working with these buckets. Ant, you understand me, right?’
A stocky young Yoonan guy, who was tinkering with the flaps of the craft, raised his bald, grey-skinned head.
