Clockwork Wings - Lexi Ostrow
Prologue
Her wings flitted against the glass of the container surrounding her, clanking loudly against her prison. Her wings weren’t like those of other fairies. Not any longer. Formed of cogs and gears, her wings whirred and whizzed when she flew. Amerial had never minded her metal appendages. In fact, they’d been a source of hope after humans had plucked her birth wings from her back. Hope blossomed in Amerial’s heart like a spring flower at the words. Her wings beat faster, bashing against the glass over and over again. The female pulled back and was no longer just a giant eyeball, but a beautiful woman in a dusty, dirty cloak and men’s breeches.
Henry, do you think you could be less cynical? I was only trying to look at her wings. They’re exactly as we thought they were, tiny little clock parts! It’s splendid. A true work of art!
The human man shook his head, his long blond locks swishing into his face. Do not exclaim so much, Desiree. We have no idea if she will be the key, or if we are spinning our proverbial wheels.
Amerial watched as Henry put an arm over Desiree’s shoulder, dropping a chaste kiss on her cheek. Let’s go grab the device, this little fairy must be frightfully angry, and this will give her some time.
Desiree, nodded and bent down toward Amerial’s prison cage. We will return shortly, little fairy. Do not despair. You’re here to save the world!
Amerial’s face contorted with anger, as the
