    Beyond the cracked sidewalk and the telephone pole with layers of flyers in a rainbow of colors, a ten-foot high concrete block wall caked with dozens of coats of paint provided the backdrop for a small shrine. It was almost hidden by a forest of soggy stuffed animals planted amongst melted candles, dead flowers and other objects meant to commemorate those who had passed on. One word covered the wall, written in red graffitied letters on a gold background— Rejoice!

    The shrine was as old as the district itself—a remnant from an era when Japanese immigrants resiliently declared their stake in the city, hoping that this new land would bring prosperity and opportunity. Those founders built the shrine to solidify their claim to their new home, a symbol caught between the old and the new. It reminded them where they came from. The district changed as the original homesteaders migrated to shinier neighborhoods, making room for waves of new hopeful
