Euphoric Drift - Ashley Parker Owens

    Olive Hill

    July 15, 1981

    I take off my jacket

    throw it in the bushes

    pick up my clattering bike

    to ride to school.

    My little brother

    watches from the window

    cheeks soft & pure,

    rapid blinking.

    A cylinder flies past,

    a quarter-mile up,

    bolting right to left,

    angled at forty-five degrees.

    It traverses our view

    in four to five seconds,

    faster than white water rapids,

    with no breeze.

    Pungent sweet burgundy

    brushes my arm

    I jump, my chest tightens.

I glance back at my brother

but he isn’t at the window.

I thought the graze was an insect,

    but it was a force

    hundreds of feet wide,

    embedded in ice.

    Inside the flat image,

    the dark entity is possibly

    an optical illusion;

    a phenomenon;

    a deep crevasse

    & not an object protruding.

    No smell, no temperature

    No color, no sound

    unlike

    here on earth

    Fresh air & pine trees,

carbon dissipating in the atmosphere after firing a rifle,

the beach after a hard rain,

drinking hot chocolate at a January football game,

    moist puppy breath,

    I don’t know.

    Mayfield

    Highways 52 & 62, January 8, 2000

    Driving toward the bridge,

    the lonely passenger side

    lit up sharp orange,

    shimmery as sunlight

    bouncing off the side mirror

    interrupting my focus—

    as
