    M ayday. Mayday. Mayday.

    It was 2:00 on a hot afternoon over the desert just outside of Las Vegas. The mountains dotted with green trees to the left were in stark contrast to the brown desert.

    A puddle of water floated on the horizon, always out of reach.

    Jackson Smith braced himself for a crash landing.

    Shortly after taking off from Las Vegas, he’d began experiencing some type of engine problem.

    He’d dropped into turbulence, only for the plane to settle with blinking sensor lights.

    There was a small airport up ahead and he prepared to make an unscheduled landing. Long enough to figure out the problem.

    But with a few adjustments, all seemed to be under control again.

    He took a deep breath and got his heart rate back within normal limits.

    Seconds later, after he’d caught his breath, he saw the little lick of flame shooting out of the propeller.

    He flew a brand-new state of the art Cessna Skyhawk.

    This was not supposed to happen.

    Mayday. Mayday. Mayday, he said again, not bothering to hide the distress in his voice.
