    Playthings - Kate Roth

    Chapter One

    Chase

She isn’t wearing any panties. God, if only that were the sexiest thing about her this evening. My hand creeps up her thigh under the table, and she doesn’t even flinch. The room is full of important people, most of whom are looking at her or already have looked at her for longer than their spouses would appreciate. Christine Benjamin is stunning to the point where I’ve seen people literally stunned by her—like they see her coming and stop dead in their tracks. I swear if she sneezed, all five hundred some guests at this shindig would say, bless you, in unison. And she’d sweetly give a thank-you and act demure as though she isn’t a tomcat in a black dress with no fucking panties on underneath.

Christine meets my eyes as my hand boldly slides higher, closer to the heat I’m certain brews between her legs. Her stare makes me weak. Eyes the color of whiskey rimmed with an irregular band of deep mahogany, she says more with a look than most people can with an oral dissertation. She painted her lips red tonight, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want my whole body covered in that shade. I’d be a fool if I didn’t beg her for it. I likely will before dawn. Those cherry red lips split to reveal a brilliant white smile on her gorgeous face, and I remind myself where we are and who I am. Who I am to her.

Keep moving that hand and I’ll miss my big moment, Mr. Wilson.

I squeeze her knee and acquiesce to stall my advances within the crowded room, especially since, like she said, her big moment is approaching. She sweeps her gaze across the table, and I watch her as she effortlessly engages with anyone and everyone, ever the social butterfly. Her profile hypnotizes me, her smooth brown skin calls to me, and her laugh echoes in my head like a catchy commercial jingle I’ll never be able to shake. As I look past her, my chest pulses with a combination of fear and excitement. I lock eyes with the man who just sat down in the chair beside her. His salt-and-pepper hair and matching stubble along his strong jaw complete his look of superior sophistication. They go perfectly together. She’s beautiful, and he’s her debonair husband, Ross.

While my hand still rests on his wife’s thigh, he pins me with blue eyes and winks. I smirk at him in return. These two will be the death of me. He leans in, behind Christine, and I inch forward to hear whatever it is he’s going to say with that devilish look in his eye.

I’m glad you came tonight, he says. You look so fucking hot in a tux.

A breath stammers in my chest, and though my head nods, I don’t have words. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin—Ross and Christine—have been a complicated part of my life for two years.

It started with Christine. It’s always been about her. But then I met Ross, and I realized I’d been denying a part of myself for way too long. Between these two, my head is always spinning and my cock is always hard. It’s complex. They’re married, and I’m just their…boy toy. I’m their adventure, their plaything. They decided years ago to indulge each other by exploring mutual fantasies, one of which included bringing another man into their bed. Lucky for me, I’m their type and was at the right place at the right time.

They took me on vacations, they wined and dined me, and while I continued to be the embodiment of a tab of Ecstasy for them, they became more than that for me.

Ross’s pale blue eyes drift to his wife’s back, exposed from the intricately cut lace of her dress. She looks beautiful, doesn’t she?

I sigh and keep my eyes on him. He’s just as gorgeous. And the way he looks at the woman he loves makes him that much more attractive. She always does, I reply.

Christine leans back in her chair, and we both move to accommodate her. She bounces her gaze between the two of us with a coy smile. I can hear you, you know.

Ross plants a kiss on her cheek, and I remember my hand is still latched to her thigh. My thumb sweeps tenderly over her leg, and she glances at me with caring eyes. I can’t kiss her here like I want to, but I know that’s why they ask me to come to things like this. The forbidden nature of it turns them on. Being in a room with their friends and colleagues while we share secret touches under tables or stolen moments in darkened hallways is part of the experience. Everything feels like a game, which has made me start to fear that nothing is real.

Ross glances at his watch. Almost time for your speech. You ready? he asks Christine.

She blows out a breath, and her eyes go wide I guess. I’ll never get used to these things. You know I hate public speaking.

I laugh. For someone who hates it, you sure wind up doing it a lot. Too good at your job, Mrs. Benjamin.

Her eyes roll, but she quirks a little smile. Silence falls within our bubble, and I take my hand from her thigh to reach for my glass of champagne. As I tilt it back, my eyes scan the room full of tuxes and diamonds and fake laughs. When I look at Christine, she’s staring off in the distance, but it’s not an absent look—she’s looking at someone. I follow her gaze and know exactly what she sees. I breathe a laugh at her side, and she elbows me without taking her eyes off the catering waitress clearing dishes from the next table over. More specifically, without taking her eyes off said woman’s ass in tight-fitting black pants. Ross and I aren’t the only ones who choose from all columns.

I can’t blame Christine for staring—the ass in question grabs my attention too. Round and tight under a slender waist, with a long, whimsical braid of brunette hair tickling the top of her pants. I’ve always been an ass man, and this one is among the very best. A rogue thought runs through my mind of having this
