How To Spend Time With God

When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.—Jesus

    (Matthew 6:6)

I love devotional books. I really do. One of the first devotional books I read was Charles Swindoll’s, Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life. It was a fantastic devotional guide for me that I still quote from frequently. It shaped my thinking and praying in powerful, positive ways.

We are made to influence each other. In the Christian life we need other Christians to share their wisdom, their knowledge and point of view with us. That makes us stronger and better.

Devotional books are a way for mature Christians to share themselves with us—even though we don’t have the advantage of sharing that time with them directly. Devotionals can be a tool through which God can strengthen and mature us in Jesus Christ.

Nothing, however, can substitute for your direct, daily, one on one time with Jesus. I’ll say it again—nothing.

Jesus assumed that we would spend daily time with the Father (see Matthew 6:6). Don’t cheat yourself of that blessing!

So, I’m glad you’re reading this devotional book—but I want you to use it as an addendum, not a substitute for your daily quiet time.

If you don’t know how to have a daily Quiet Time, take the next five days, and follow the guide that starts on the following pages. (And please also feel free to start the devotional portion of this book that starts with Day 1, Week 1 in addition to your Quiet Time).

DAY 1: START TODAY WITH JESUS!

    READ: John 1:1-18

When We Honor God, He Honors Us!

As soon as possible, take time TODAY to have a Quiet Time with God. A Quiet Time is when you spend a time of dedicated, undistracted prayer and Bible reading. If you've never done this before, get to a place where you won't be disturbed and begin by dedicating 5 minutes to prayer and 5 minutes in Bible reading.

A good place to start is John 1:1-18.

DAY 2: INVESTING IN THE WORD

    READ: John 1:19-34

Why We Need the Bible In Our Daily Quiet Times

By ourselves, we can't find God—we are far too prone to self-deception. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?"

We need to hear God's daily direction to help us self-correct, to see our world accurately and to sensitize us to God's
