Image 1Chapter 1
It was Humbertt's Day, the birthday of the Lord of Emoh, and it was a day of mass celebration. All the citizens were invited. They would all dance, eat, and drink away the day, and all work was forbidden. Even though the town of Emoh was not rich in the slightest, that would never stop them from throwing the biggest celebrations in all of Tenalp Htrae.
People of every race would come to celebrate the Lord's birthday from all over the world.
The townsfolk were setting up for the feast. The town’s carpenters had put extra tables and chairs together to make up for the growth in population. It was also because young Billy Barrott (the lord’s only son) had accidentally
set fire to a few tables last winter, but no one talked about it. Fifty pounds worth of meat had been imported from overseas as
well as plenty of drinks ranging from mead to the sweetest of wines, which had been stored deep in an underwater cave for the last two hundred years. It had been said that being in the deep sea for so long gave it a strange kick.
Everyone had been up since the crack of dawn, helping set up for what would be a day of a wonderful celebration.
Even the mischievous little children who were known for stealing the baker's buns were helping out as on this day, and this day only, they were permitted to drink with the adults and stay out as long as they wished. They were rushing around, climbing on top of barrels and tables, hanging banners from the buildings which read, 'Happy Humbertt's Day' in somewhat slanted and squashed handwriting.
No one was left without a job as there was so much to do and only a few hours before people from other towns and cities would be arriving. Because today was such an important day, it was frowned upon if you didn’t help out or if you were late helping out. Sometimes people would even be punished as one young lad was about to find out.
REVOLO! WHERE ARE YOU?
bellowed a
thunderous voice.
The deep voice shook through the house, vibrating the floorboards that a boy lay upon. With each heavy step towards getting closer, the boy, Revolo, became more and more scared about what would happen if he was found in his sleeping robes. Like a scared cat, he jumped out from his bedsheets and began getting dressed as fast as he could. He
threw his robes on to the splintered floorboards and had just begun pulling his tatty trousers up when the door burst open.
Whoa! You don’t burst into a teenager's room.
Revolo yanked his trousers up to cover himself, wincing slightly after realising he pulled them way too far.
A man was standing by the door with both his hand folded over his chest, giving Revolo a look with his sharp wrinkled eyes.
Hmm ... and what reason do you have for not being ready this time?
The man asked.
Revolo hated his stepfather. He wasn’t a bad guy, but as the lord’s righthand man, he was always getting his case about looking presentable and giving him constant lectures.
Well, my alarm clock was late bursting in and lecturing me. Must be growing slow.
Revolo replied as he rolled his eyes.
How funny. It’s your job to set the table with those degenerates you call friends.
The man said.
They’re not degenerates, Harvey. They’re the only people in this wreck of a town who don’t look down on me.
Revolo replied.
Maybe if you grew up, you wouldn’t have people look down on you.
The man mocked.
There was so much Revolo wanted to say to his stepfather, but there was little point. No one ever listened to him.
Harvey walked out of Revolo's room with a huff, leaving the door open. Revolo quickly slammed the door, the loud
thud covering up a deep sigh. He dropped back and pushed his forehead against the wall. This was a particularly smooth area of the room that had been rid of any splinters due to Revolo resting his head against it whenever he was in his room. He had no idea how long he had been standing against the wall, but he knew he couldn't keep his friends waiting.
Slowly, he pulled his head back up and shuffled towards a pile of dirty clothes that lay next to his bedsheet. He grabbed the shirt on the top of the pile and flicked it into the air. As soon as it reached Revolo’s eye level, his hand shot out and snatched it from the air’s grip.
Once he was fully clothed, he spun around to look at a little table that waited under the crooked window and picked up a ring that was rested on the edge of it.
He peered down and examined the dark blue gem that sat within the centre of the square-shaped ring and whispered,
Wish I knew you.
The ring rested in his rough palm before he gently placed it in his pocket and ran downstairs. As he reached the last two steps, he grabbed the rails to his left and jumped off. His body swung around the rails, the force of it pushing him towards the doorway. The wind blew at his head, slapping him in the face with his hair as he turned to the left and went over towards a rundown little stable. As he got closer to the stable, a pony's head emerged. Revolo stroked the pony's mane and smiled. He pulled an apple out that had been left for him and fed it to the rugged-looking creature before continuing on his way towards the centre of the town.
Where have you been, buddy?
Henry laughed as he greeted Revolo by putting his arm over his shoulder. Too busy daydreaming about Becca again?
Hey, no need to be jealous that she’d choose me over you.
Revolo smirked as Henry gave him a friendly push.
Revolo and Henry’s laughter was seemingly interrupted by a young girl who resembled that of a small looking teacher. Are you two going to help or is it still a woman’s job to set the table?
she mocked.
Both froze in fear at the deadly stare that came from behind the glasses. Even though he had known her for ages, Revolo could never stop admiring Becca's slender cheekbones and freckled cheeks. He didn't like to admit it, but over the past year since they had become friends, he had grown quite fond of her and her confidence at making her thoughts known.
After another dial, they had all finished setting up the food whilst another group of young teens had begun to bring the drinks out. Henry chuckled to himself as he witnessed one of the kids getting smacked around the back of the head for sipping at the foam on one of the pints. It was noon already, and they were just finishing up since the guests had begun to arrive already, some coming from as far away as the kingdoms to the west.
As soon as they were welcomed, the band started up, playing merry tunes using turned over barrels and makeshift lutes. Like there was some unwritten rule, everyone who arrived could already be seen drinking and dancing, shouts
of happiness and the occasional slurred statement could be heard.
The instant the townsfolk saw the guests beginning to celebrate, all work was ceased, and they rushed over to the tables. No one let loose and partied like the folk in Emoh.
The lord was sitting on his throne and watching everyone celebrate him. After a little while, he himself thrust his particularly round arse out of his large chair, its comfort clearly shown by the very clear indent that was left on its red cushion and began performing a jig amongst all the others who were dancing.
Everyone was having so much fun partying that they didn't notice one person wasn't enjoying it as much as the rest, at the bottom of the incredibly long table. Despite the number of stories his tutor had told him about people falling that way, Revolo was leaning back in his chair, and he was gently sipping at an ale.
While he sat in his chair, a hand rubbed his back. Come on, have some fun ... or at least get blind drunk with me and Henry.
It was Becca. She was standing next to him with a great, beautiful smile on her face.
What’s the point though? We get one day of limitless partying and then it’s back to normal boring life.
Revolo and Becca’s eyes locked. The blue and green becoming lost in one another.
She said, I know. Why do you think me and Henry are getting drunk? One day of shameless drunkenness to make up for every other day.
She sat next to Revolo, and after staring deeply into her eyes, Revolo realised Becca was staring back just as deeply.
Together they began to giggle, and Becca extended a hand.
Shall we?
she asked.
Revolo downed the rest of his ale and took her hand. It would be my honour miss.
he replied, and they both giggled.
Becca linked arms with him, and the two grabbed two more ales before making their way towards Henry. Together they formed a circle and began to dance. They spun, stepped, and shimmied as they moved around the town, picking up more drinks along the way.
The more drunk they all got, the more dangerous their dancing became. They fell into tables and grazed their knees.
Henry attempted a backflip. However, after his left foot connected with Harvey's face, Becca thought it would be best if they left the scene. As they ran out of the centre of the town, the only clear sound they could hear was that of Harvey making his disappointment in Revolo's choice of friends clear.
As day turned to night, the tables were cleared. However, the party still continued. Only in such remote parties could you see lords and ladies dancing with the common folks.
Lord Humbertt was dancing and drinking with the public as if he himself was just like them. While everyone was
dancing, Revolo, Henry, and Becca sat atop a few empty barrels, watching everyone.
How can they be so happy? Every year is the exact same as the last. Is there something I’m missing?
Revolo asked.
Becca harrumphed. Who says they’re happy? Under that smile, every single one of us is tired of the same thing.
Well, I’m not gonna spend the rest of my night watching unhappy happy people dancing. What do you say we take some drinks for the road and leave?
Revolo’s eyes bulged with desperation at this. Please!
All as one, the trio rose to their feet, stumbling as they began to feel the effects of the alcohol on their bodies again.
Henry's body slumped against the wall in an attempt to stop himself from toppling over as he rested, looking as if he was going to spew vomit when his eyes caught something in the distance. Hey ... guys ... who's that sneaking away?
Becca and Revolo turned to look into the alley Henry was trying to point at. His eyesight going in and out of focus, Revolo managed to perceive a figure stepping away from lanterns, their entire body becoming encompassed in shadow. He couldn’t be sure, but he thought he could make out a red handkerchief hanging loosely from a waistcoat. Is that Billy Barrott? He’s been acting shady for the last couple of weeks. Probably sneaking off to go read books. Doesn’t want his friends to know.
Henry said in his half-drunk voice.
As they watched the entrance to the alleyway, three more boys entered, their bodies fading out of sight. The trio
stumbled towards the entrance to the alleyway but got cut off by a group of drinks, one of which was Lord Humbertt. As they stumbled around, the lord took hold of Henry and began spinning him around, attempting a duet.
Revolo and Becca began to dance around with the lord’s entourage, drunken smiles adorned each and every face.
Henry squeezed out from between Lord Humbertt’s flabby arms, dropping down to his knees and jumping backwards.
Once he was free, Revolo and Becca wobbled after him as they all drew closer to the shadow that was the alleyway.
They hid behind walls and ducked behind empty wine barrels as they gradually followed Billy and his friends, making sure to stay at least two yards behind.
In their drunken state, neither of them could be described as skilled when it came to stalking their prey. Revolo got caught up in his pursuit, and in an attempt to leap over one of the barrels, he hit his behind, tripped, and fell, knocking over two of the barrels whilst causing a third to gentle spin.
The group of kids froze halfway across the cobblestone bridge. All spinning on their heels to inspect where the sound came from. All three froze where they stood. Revolo only had one foot firmly planted on the floor while Becca and Henry tried to pick him up. Every person present was frozen in place, all looking at each other. The only thing breaking the silence was the billowing of the cold night's wind. After what seemed like a decade, especially in their
