Introduction
Welcome to our final collection of short stories based on the Of Duty and Silver series! It’s been two long years since we decided to start publishing this series, a decision that was shortly followed by the idea that each book in the series should have free short stories to go along with it. That means that since January of 2020 through this current collection, there have been 5 novels and 24 short stories. Certainly not what we were expecting when we had our first conversation about publishing!
These stories, like all our shorts, are designed to be read on their own. Yes, we often use these stories to introduce the characters who are important in each novel, but they can still be enjoyed on their own. Of course, if you would like to read the novels our short stories are connected to, you certainly can; all 5 are available worldwide. And on November 17, 2021, Of Duty and Silver: The Complete Series will be available to buy, so you can have all the novels in one place. We’ve had a lot of fun writing this series, and these stories, and we hope you like reading them as well!
As with previous story collections, most of these have appeared first in our newsletter and on our website. But we always like to have some value added to these collections. On Stolen Wine
is appearing for the first time, and the map of the Western Immani Empire is something only the two of us have seen up until now. To get more free stories, be sure to sign up for our newsletter. Just for joining, you’ll get a special novella, The Perfect Time, that’s available only subscribers.
So, thanks for reading our stories and our novels. And don’t be too sad about the end of the Of Duty and Silver series. Black Eagle Rising, the first novel in our next series, The Reign of the Eagle, will come out in spring, 2022, and it will star many of the same characters that you have grown to love. Or to loathe, whichever applies. See you then!

The Web in the Palace
227 M.E.
The doors hung wide open when Daryna got there. She was trying to get away from the smoke and scent of death in the forum, and her steps had taken her, almost automatically, to the Proconsul’s Palace. At least one polk had gotten there before her, and its riders ran up and down the steps, carrying out statues and tapestries, sacks of gold and bottles of wine.
One of the officers, a fendrik Daryna knew slightly, waved at her and held up a silver serving tray. Earstien’s Blessings! Earstien’s Blessings, Daryna Matushka!
She raised her hand in blessing and continued up the steps and through the doors. Someone had hacked at the lock repeatedly with an axe before realizing it wasn’t even fastened. Possibly a metaphor for this whole expedition.
It was still almost impossible to believe they were here, and they had taken an Immani provincial capital. King Yeska had wanted to stop at the border, but then Daryna had sent birds ahead, and they had returned again and again with the same tale: the proconsul had spread his troops too thin. The Immani had—supposedly—the greatest army the world had ever known. But there were fewer than two thousand men between the border and this city. As Yeska had said that morning, If only we’d known how easy this would be, we would have done it years ago!
Yes, we should have,
Daryna thought, studying the conquered city from the doorway. For centuries you’ve looked down on us. For centuries you thought you were better, and you mocked our faith. You never thought the Polkein of the Faithful would ever dare gather together and take you on. You never dreamed there would be someone like me to lead them!
Because this was her victory. It wasn’t just a matter of luck or Earstien’s will. Daryna had been the one who had made this happen. No one else could ever have done it. And she felt she had a right to be proud of what she had done. Grinning, she turned and entered the palace.
In the front hall, two Loshadnarodski soldiers were trying to pull down a statue of the goddess Amora. Whether they were doing this out of religious piety or because they wanted to haul it home with them, Daryna had no idea. But she cast a tiny cutting spell at the base, all the same, and made their job a little easier. Then she walked on before they could notice her presence or try to thank her.
Off the front courtyard, Daryna heard sounds of struggle coming from a room, and she looked in, a spell on her lips, in case there were enemy legionnaires still here and
