An excerpt from Wings of the Heart:
The Launch of All of Her Dreams
"Will they get upset if I go now, Father? I don't want to make anyone feel bad."
"The younger ones won't likely notice. And the older ones will know exactly why you enjoy extra time this evening. Your birthday is tomorrow, remember? Your fourteenth."
Mranes expected a fine meal this evening, and gifts. Hopefully books with tales of faraway lands, or maybe one of her father's fine tunics made especially for her. She preferred those to gowns, much to her grandmother's disappointment.
"I don't think I've ever forgotten my birthday, not since I was old enough to understand what it was."
"What you don't yet know is this one is special. Tonight your mother and I will help you recall your sleeping lifetime in a different way than we have before."
Mranes shivered as the breeze cooled her legs, startling after so long in the warm water.
And not a little bit from the idea of having one of her sleeping lifetimes recalled.

Wings of the Heart
The warm, green-blue water sparkled under the early morning sun in the distance, creating the impression of a million glittering jewels dancing with the tide.
A group of silvery sea-hunting birds wheeled against the deep blue sky. Their sharp cries pierced the repetition of the waves scrubbing along the shore and splashing against the rocks under Mranes Dalgryn’s water-roughened hands.
She’d heard a thousand stories of how the ancestors built the long, narrow pier in her village of Gartria when they first arrived in the land of Genfrith many long years ago. Transporting the rich orange and vivid black stones from outcrops a day’s journey inland, then adding the sharp lines of mortar made from the bright red sands all around her.
The stone walkway extended far into the water, branching out into smaller piers so twenty ships could anchor safely. Everything from flat, shallow local fishing boats to solid, round-bellied day-boats with bright, colorful sails, bringing merchants and visitors from all along the jagged coastline of the great continent of Hanferthen.
Once in a while, and not nearly as often as Mranes would have liked, the great trader ships from across the vast, cold, and dangerous Nifendraw Sea arrived, anchoring at the farthest point from shore where the seabed plunged to depths unseen and dangerous. Unlike the cheery day-boats sitting high in the water—with sunshades in equally bright tones allowing the travelers to enjoy their days sheltering from the warm sun—the trader ships were darker.
Quieter.
More serious, somehow.
They arrived under a billowing arrangement of ominous gray sails, with broad decks made of dark green wood that held no cushions for conversation or napping. The traders were designed to carried enough cargo that their sturdy decks were riddled with hidden doors for loading and unloading.
Or so Mranes had heard. She’d never seen much of the mysterious cargo or stepped onto one
