What a treat for the mind and imagination! L.M. Montgomery gives us the story of Anne Shirley, brought to Avonlea, P.E.I. to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. So begins a charming tale that leaves you wanting more (thank goodness there is more in the form of a whole set of sequels). Montgomery's descriptions of Prince Edward Island are nothing short of wondrous.I have seen the television mini-series produced in the 1980s and loved it. I had never read the book until just recently. I am so glad I did. Completely charming and captivatingly imaginative, this book will have you smiling all the way through.

I read _Anne of Green Gables_ probably more than 20 times as a young person. I recently started re-reading it with my daughter, and--although we are early on as yet--it is as fresh as it ever was, with a character who still appeals, and enough drama and emotion to satisfy even kids used to today's more action-oriented children's lit.

Anne of Green Gables is a classic for obvious reasons. This story takes the story line familiar in video or CD format and brings it to life in orchestra of language. A welcome addition to a collection.

I was a little slow to warm to the young Anne. Her constant monologues wore me out, but as she got a little older, I grew to love her. I loved Marilla and Matthew from the start, such wonderful characters. The plot felt a little episodic in the early going but then fell into something with a more coherent trajectory later on. I somehow missed Anne when I was young, but my inner child can still enjoy her.

I love Anne of Green Gables it is one of those classic books that despite its setting and characters it is still a story that young readers can relate to. Throughout this book and the series it shows various kinds of families, beyond the typical nuclear family. Anne is such a headstrong girl, who means well but has a tendency to get into scrapes. I think that the problems that Anne faces are similar to the problems that young girls still face today.

I LOVE this book. Montgomery has a way of creating characters that are alive. You believe everything about them. Her writing style is unmatched. Her use of words, amazing. I am glad there is more to Anne than just this book. I hope I enjoy the others as much as I have enjoyed this one. I completely agree with the statement on the cover of this book - "The most beloved, beguiling and timeless heroine in all of fiction!"

I read all of the Anne books as a child, and then drifted away from them, but upon coming back I find that I still love these books. While they aren't as "meaty" as other books I could be reading, they are definitely enjoyable.

Definitely an all-time favorite. The later Anne books tend toward the romantic, but this one is wonderfully silly, moving, and engaging.

Anne of green gables is a great story filled with juicy detail of the stunning main charter Anne. The story tells the life of an orphan girl who gets picked to go to the beautiful green gables but her new parents wanted a boy the end up keeping Anne. As she gets into lots of trouble she is enjoying the change in her life even though she hasn't got puffed sleeves but she dose manage to make a good friend.

"If the path set before her feet was to be narrow she knew that flower's of quiet happiness would bloom along it." Taken from the last chapter after Matthew died and Marilla is discovered to have severe eye problems. Anne decides to give up her scholarship and teach at her local school so she can help Marilla and they can keep Green Gables. Anne has a vivid imagination for beauty in nature.

What a wonderfully cozy story. I had grown up with the PBS specials and it's only in my adulthood that I finally found time to read this treasure of a book. This is by far the best coming of age story I have read. Anne's growth through tales of small-town life — her rivalry with Gilbert, friendship with Diana, terrible cake-making ability — is an absolute pleasure to read. I can not wait to dig deeper into the series.

I love this book! It has been my very favorite for as long as I can remember. My Mother checked it out from the Library to read to me when I was very young. I reread the whole series on my own in High School and often watch the Kevin Sullivan Movie version of the story. It is comfort food for the soul!

Although L.M Montgomery's description heavy writing can get a little clunky at times, her novel "Anne of Green Gables" is otherwise just wonderful. The story is about Anne Shirley, a plucky and romantic girl who gets herself in all sorts of scrapes, mainly due to her hot temper. All of the characters -- inhabitants of Price Edward Island -- are interesting, charming and likable. Overall, this is a quick and enjoyable read... I come back every once and a while to read it again and again.

An absolute classic of all time. I read it over and over again as a child and recently read it with my ten-year-old daughter who enjoyed it too. Reading it as an adult I particularly admired the way the passage of time was handled, and the way that Anne matures as a character as the book goes on.

I never read this when I was young. I can see the attraction, for the pre-teen girl, and indeed my own daughter enjoyed it. However, for an adult the story holds very little of interest. I can enjoy the descriptions of nature, but it is too preachy and has little character development except for Anne and a bit for Marilla.

"Anne of Green Gables" should be required reading for every middle school girl. It's a wonderful story about imagination, self-awareness, and indomitable spirit.

I am upset with myself that I did not read this gem of a book earlier! The characters are great, the dialogue is great, and so is the narrative. This book makes me want to move to Canada and live on a farm and have tea time every day with cake and jam.

Not sure how I managed not to read this as a child. I got through the Little Women books and the 'What Katy Did' series, but never Anne of Green Gables. My mother-in-law loves it and I bought it for her recently, so read her copy on the way back to Canada from a UK trip this week. Really enjoyed it - can see why it's a classic.

My favourite book of all time. I have read this book about ten times!!!!! Everyone knows Anne Shirley's story, but if you haven't read the book, you don't know what you're missing. Anne is literature's spunkiest heroine...it's hard not to love this book.

I did not read these, or see the show, as a child. I enjoyed this book. It is a slow book without lots of action, but, it has endearing characters. I immediately fell for Matthew, who becomes one of Anne's guardians. I very much enjoyed the pace in the final quarter of the book. I have watched maybe three episodes of the new Netflix series and have mostly enjoyed it, though they have taken some liberties.

Oh! It was better than I remembered. I laughed out loud so many times; I can't remember the last time a book made me laugh like that, and so often. And I cried like a fool at the end. It's been so long (20 years, I suppose), I'd all together forgotten how it ended.

So glad I revisited this one. A childhood favorite that stands the test of time.
