Let me invite you into the life of a little girl named Anna. Let her take you on a journey that no one in their right mind would want to endure, in a world where no one cares and no one feels, with an abusive father who has no respect for life or himself.

    CHAPTER 1

    The Story Begins

    (Anna)

THE WORLD TOOK A SERIOUS turn away from humanity. The year is 2051. The place is Wales, no longer a part of the U.K. The world has changed, and no one seems to care. People forgot about people. The coronavirus came and went. There were other pandemics after it, but no one took much interest. People die and are born in this tragic new world, but no one has a clue about history, about humankind, about anything else, except a little girl in a small village named Anna.

Anna is a smart and sweet person, but her life so far has been a tragic one because of the new world she was born into. She has no siblings. The only people in her life are her mother and father. She lives in a tiny village called Juniper near the coast. Rain seems to be the sunshine for the people here, and there’s always something wrong. But Anna has a unique way about her. She has a better grip on life than anyone else in her community. Now her story begins, and Anna will tell it to you.

My name in Anna, and I was born in the year 2039 to Welsh parents. They were both very young when I was conceived, and maybe that’s why there was so much anger between them. It all seemed normal, though. I mean the abuse, the lack of love and parenting. It all seemed normal and easy to deal with, especially since that was all I witnessed as a child. But then something else happened, something different. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I saw what I saw, and things began to change.

It was just a dream, a fantasy from an old movie. It was a chilly day and raining hard. We hadn’t seen the sun in over a week. Hell, the sun had no real purpose for us in this new world. I mean in terms of shining through the clouds. Without sunshine, life just seemed dull. I remember I was sitting on the floor with a book from our small collection when my father walked into the room and asked me what I was reading.

It was a non-fiction book about feelings of shame. My father had no interest in that, particularly because of his own shame and abuse. He walked over, snatched the book from my hands, and slapped me across the face. Then he told me he never wanted to see me reading such trash in his home again.

My mother came running in and asked what was going on, and why I was crying, and he angrily told her, Mind you own damned business! This is none of your concern!

Oh yes it is, my mother replied. She’s my daughter as well as yours.

At that, my father pulled out the pocket knife that he always kept with him and said, You see this? If you don’t return to what you were doing, then this knife will be your concern!

I remember the tears running down my mother’s face and how badly I wanted to see my father die that day. My relationship with him was deeply unpleasant, or maybe I should say it was something I couldn’t understand. But the fact remained that he was my father. My relationship with my mother, though, was untouchable. She was the best thing in my life and the closest thing to my heart. I did have friendships with other people in the village, but not on the same level. She was always there and cared very deeply for me.

My mother and I spent a lot of time together. She was unusually close in age to me because she had me so young. I believe that’s why one of the things we had in common was our way of thinking. My father, though, was a whole different beast.

    CHAPTER 2

    Anna’s Family

    (A History)

I KNOW BY NOW YOU’RE wondering what kind of family I came from. Over the years, I learned about the way things used to be by reading a lot of history books. Things in the past were so easy. There was so much love, and more humanity than there is now. I remember my mother always saying to my father, If only things were the way they used to be. My father would look at her and say that things had changed because man had changed and lost his way!

I would just look at them both and say to myself, Why don’t you change? Or why don’t you help others change back to being civil again? But I never had the courage to ask them something so far-fetched. I would just sit and ponder the ideal on my own.

My mother and father had different backgrounds. My mother was born to a Welsh family on a farm in the countryside. My grandparents were killed in a storm during a trip in 2031. It was devastating, and it tore my mother and her sister apart. Sometimes she blames my father for it. It changed their relationship too—that was when all the abuse started.

My father never talks about his family. I didn’t really know his parents either. I know that he was their only child, because of a lack of resources, and I think that had a lot to do with my father’s anger—not having the money to get what we needed to be a regular family.

But I know that something unexpected is going to happen in this new world! I was walking home from school, not in any big hurry, so I decided to take another route. Normally it takes me twenty minutes to get home. This time it took me two hours. It was a pleasant day, though. The rain had stopped, the sky was clear for a while, and I was in a cheerful mood.

Along the way, I came across big rock blocking my path. I tried to move it, but it was too heavy. I’d just decided to walk around it when a stranger came out of nowhere and asked if she could help me move the rock. I just looked at her, my mouth open so wide that anything could have flown in. I couldn’t believe that anyone would ask to help someone with a task that was so unimportant. But that day
