Preface
Once upon a time—well, this isn’t a fairy tale; it doesn’t even have fairies in it!
A long time ago in a—that sounds very familiar. Maybe we’ll go with something else.
It was the best of times, it was the—no, no, no! This is more difficult than I thought. Well, maybe just explaining the time and the place of this tale would be a better way to start such a story before telling it. That has enough logic in it to satisfy most, so let’s do that!
In the not so distant past and the not so recent future (that’s more like it) lived a man named Michael Topaz. This rather calm, mild-mannered individual lived in a suburban area of the major city of Eastport. Since the city was landlocked, nowhere near a body of water (or even a river), nobody actually knew where the port
part of Eastport originated, but we can say the city lies on the eastern side of its host state. The suburb where Michael lived was named West Hill. This story would be quite a pain for a mapmaker, or even a compass, but here, both east and west exist in a port with no water, right on top of a hill.
Michael was the type of person you always see but never know.
