This book is dedicated to
my family and future posterity. I want them to know that I have a testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. This book is written out of the love and appreciation I have for it. The information herein is only supplemental to the spiritual witness I have already received of the Book of Mormon. It would bring me great joy for them to discover for themselves the truthfulness of this sacred book of scripture.
Preface
Brigham Young University professor Hugh Nibley used to challenge his students at the beginning of their semester to write a 600-page book, comparable to the Book of Mormon, and hand it in by the end of the semester. He believed this was a fair request, since the Book of Mormon was essentially written in just under three months by a 23-year-old farm boy with only a few years of education. The duration of a semester was just over three months and the college students attending his class were well educated. Many, if not all, had graduated high school, and most of the students were in their late teens or early twenties. The students should have had a clear advantage. However, none ever completed the task. It is Hugh Nibley’s challenge to his students that has intrigued me to research and write about this very subject. Several of the ideas contained in this book may be attributed to the research Hugh Nibley and his contemporaries have done over the years regarding the Book of Mormon and its coming forth.
The Book of Mormon is the keystone of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is central to the doctrines taught by the Church’s members and it stands as a witness to the authenticity of the prophetic mission of Joseph Smith. If the Book of Mormon is true, then Joseph Smith was a true prophet, chosen by God to restore and organize His church on the earth. Simply put, if the Book of Mormon is what Joseph and other personal witnesses have said it is, then it is of God and therefore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is God’s true church on the earth and He is at the helm.
The Book of Mormon is either the greatest fictional work ever produced by man, or it is the word of God and should be considered holy scripture. Unfortunately, it doesn’t typically receive the credit for either. Many are quick to judge the book as a fraud and its translator, Joseph Smith, as a deceiver. However, when examining the circumstances the book was written under, as well as looking thoroughly at the details of the contents within its pages, the truth about this marvelous work begins to unfold.
This book will put you in Joseph Smith’s shoes and allow you to determine whether or not writing a comparable book is feasible under similar conditions. It may be easy to overlook the importance of the environment and the time in which the Book of Mormon was written, but in order to better understand the marvel that the Book of Mormon is, it is critical to attempt to write your book under circumstances similar to the ones Joseph Smith faced. The task to complete all the requirements listed in this book is only applicable if we assume the Book of Mormon was invented, not translated from an ancient record. As you read through this book, consider how difficult it would be for you to comply with each requirement. Any given point may be feasible if executed independently, but completing all the requirements is the only way to determine if you could, in fact, write a book comparable to the Book of Mormon.
This book is not intended to include all possible conditions, explanations, evidences, or reference materials. As modern technology progresses, and as people continue to thoroughly study the Book of Mormon, more truths will be discovered that substantiate what Joseph said about its origins. Some points in this book contain less information and fewer references than others. This is simply to allow the reader to research these points in more detail, not
