Chapter One
This Is The Game?
Early-Summer 1983
SCENE SETTING-A fictitious town called Lake Lucille in Louisiana. The name of the gymnasium is K.K.K. Memorial gym on the campus of Fallbrook Junior High School. A summer league basketball game is about to be played between the Fox 29ers and the Lake Lucille Pirates.
Coach Gary Hardwick, the CEO of the new local affiliate Fox television station, is sponsoring a local summer basketball team comprised of students which attended Malcolm Little Middle School which is in the town called Lake Lucille in Southwest sector of Louisiana mere minutes from the border line separating Texas and Louisiana. The school has partnered in educational funding for the community with this new Fox 29 network. This was an excellent way for Hardwick to get to know the people of the community and he has seen the benefits of investing money and time towards youth activities. He has moved here from Southern California along with his son Blair, who also attends the school and plays on the team. Not only is this great gesture of volunteering by Hardwick appreciated by parents; it provided an excellent opportunity to keep the boys busy and out of mischief during the summer vacation. The game today has a little more pizzazz than the average summer league game because we have a contest between the Lake Lucille Pirates and the Fox 29ers. These are pseudo-names of the teams playing, which in actuality pit the bitter rivals Fallbrook Junior High School and Malcolm Little Middle School, two teams who had participated in a regular season ending crowd-clearing brawl about four months earlier, which caused Malcolm Little Middle School to be disqualified from the City-wide playoff tournament. Many people feel that Fallbrook Junior High instigated the whole melee because they were (0-15) on the season and had no chance to make the playoffs and what greater way to stick it to your bitter rival than to be responsible for their playoff disqualification. During the summer months, no team could wear the school moniker or branding, because technically there is no school function activities, but basketball games are allowed because other civic clubs can participate like cheerleaders, dance, 4-H club etc. Pseudo-names aside, the players of both teams have lingering harsh feelings and emotions are raw prior to the tip-off.
"Oh, My God, why do they have to call themselves a junior high school, it is a friggin’ middle school, like in the middle between elementary and high school. What is so hard about that, good grief Charlie Brown, so lame and fairy-like. AHMED DUPREE says out loud as he and his teammates for Fox 29 prepare to come out of the locker room and warm-up before the start of the game. This young pre-teen Ahmed Xavier Dupree, called Ahm for short. He is out of character today which may speak more to the dislike between the two schools than hormones raging from puberty. He is usually of a stoic nature, never too high nor never too low, always cool, calm and collected, very reserved guy who usually lets his actions speak louder than his words. Ahm is a young man struggling with his self-awareness as the landscape of the ever-evolving pre-teen male does usually around this age and aside from living life daily at a faster pace than belies his numerical age and to be honest he does not have a clear idea on what to pursue moving forward. He is burning at both ends of the candle plus he is beginning to
smell himself as the old folk lore would suggest as his body physique takes on a transformation as he stands at about five feet eight inches and weighs a well-chiseled one hundred and eighty-pounds, but he brags to his teammates that he is six feet tall. His black-patched facial features which made him the object of ridicule begin to blend into his now noticeably smooth, cocoa butter brown complexion skin. He has a multiple array of talents besides basketball which are not readily seen by the visible connotation like his affection for Art, Music as he’s a member of the school’s Strings Orchestra and plays the violin, viola and clarinet, although often not his personage, but embraces those attributes with a cocky swag like, I’ll do this only because I’m good at it. He also participated on the school’s Beta club, football and track & field. But he loves probably Art or design drawing the most of all things; it appeals to him internally. The shift in mindset does not go un-noticed by his teammates as he is very talkative lately, in fact, it is kind of obnoxious to them as he continues to rant and rave,
I can’t wait to get at that punk who under-cut me last time. Might take him out early, if he’s even on the court. Junior High school, HAW! Like they are special, we beat the brakes off them in like everything sports, chess club, spelling bee, Beta club you name it, we spank it. You wanna know why? Because they suck, Junior High school, that is so annoying it even ain’t even funny. I’ma give him the business though, what you think Scooter?" As Ahm walks towards his teammate, Scooter Goings as he reluctantly it seems to engage in the exchange of high-fives. Scooter is thinking that will shut him up hopefully, but it doesn’t as Ahm continues to the next guy. Scooter would really like to tell him shut the hell up, but he’s not going to because that may cause trouble so he and the rest of the team have to endure it.
The commentators which consist of students from Fallbrook Junior High school Speech club adds an audio feel within speakers and system used for school assembly creating that atmosphere of a televised game as they began to analyze this contest. The Lake Charles Pirates has a record of (0-3) this summer, while the Fox 29ers enters today’s game with a record of (3-0). The 29ers are led by Scooter Goings and Ahmed Dupree. Goings has been Fox 29ers go-to scoring leader, averaging 24 points per game. While Dupree is an elite defender and rebounder, who has the strength of a lion, the patience of a hawk and a cobra-like strike tenacity and quickness.
One announcer says. Now, that’s some color commentary mixed with a hyperbolic twist. The Pirates on the other hand is a one-man act led by Brett Guillory who can fill it up in a hurry with a sparkling 27 points per game average, but the Pirates only averaging 39 points per game as a team which pales in comparison to the 29ers average of 66 points per game. Needless to say, that everything here has the makings of a blow-out contest.
As the players line up in their respective spot, one of the Pirates’ player bumps Ahm intentionally off his spot to try engage in some mind games, as Ahm turns around unfazed to see who it is and notices that it is Ricardo Nattiel Jr., What’s up, star? Robbed any stores lately,
Ricardo says. Ahm answers immediately and very loudly, Scrub! You playing today? Thought you might run to summer camp and avoid the embarrassment. And yeah, ya mom’s retardo. Tell her to freshen up that litter box before I come back by later, alright!
Hey, you two, cut the crap.
The head official says. Somebody always saving yo ass,
Ahm says. One more word,
the head official tells Ahm as he motions for both team’s starting five as well as the coaches to gather at center court. We all know what happened last time you two met, a very disgusting display of sportsmanship. We are at a zero tolerance today and that’s all we have to say, we are ejecting any and everybody today. Please try us!
The head official says as Ahm and Ricardo has a mid-court stare down much like two prize fighters who are about to fight as Ahm looks him up and down smiling as Ricardo blows him an air kiss as they position themselves back to their previous spots. The other referee tosses the ball up as Blair jumps ball with the opponent from the Pirates to secure possession and the game is underway.
The commentators began speaking after a team time-out saying We are at Fallbrook Junior High campus, a great crowd today. I’m Steve Levee and this handsome fellow is Elliott Spoonhour, we have five minutes and forty-nine seconds left in the second quarter of an intense contest between the Fox 29ers and the Lake Lucille Pirates with the Pirates surprisingly ahead by a score of 14-13.
Steve says. Well, Steve, I think it is safe to say that no one expected this contest to be this close.
Elliott says. "It’s early though! But that is why you play the game, El, you just never know how things are going to turn out when two rivals meet. As Guillory grabs the board of a shot by Goings and pushes the pace passes to Jasper, but good anticipation by Dupree as he steps in front
