    CHAPTER 1

    Taking a break

E ven though the man sitting on the large brown horse had white hair, he is only aged twenty-eight years old, over the last fifteen years the young man carried out many jobs, therefore never ceased to learn about many things in life, so for his age happened to be quite wise.

At this precise moment, the man looked for a good place to set up camp for the night, as he had been on the trail for about five days since completing his last job, knowing he’d be reaching a town the next day, when arriving in town his intention is to look forward to having a nice quiet few days’ rest.

Ahead of him about half a mile there is visible a small stream leading to a small basin, once there the next task will be to make camp for the night, his way of making camp showed he’d made camp many times before, as the man automatically carried out his usual routine. Checking the ground and area for security and shelter, leading the horse to a grassy area close to his intended camp the job of relieving the horse of its burden consisting of saddlebags, saddle, bedroll, blanket and the reins plus rifle and scabbard, after patting the horses neck the horse began to feed, moving slightly upstream from the horse his camp was made, first clearing a patch of grass from the centre of his proposed camp area, using dry brush and twigs the process of building a fire took place, by using dry brush and twigs the fire made no smoke. Cutting a couple of small branches from a tree a cradle to hang a Billie (cooking pan) on had been made, after topping up the Billie with fresh water it was hung over the fire to heat up water for coffee, while waiting for the water to boil going down to the stream the young man had a much needed wash and shave, after using some of the boiling water to make coffee a couple of handfuls of bean’s were thrown into the remaining boiling water into the pot to cook, even though at this present time being out of a job the man remained vigilant and couscous, not much missed his eyes seeing the birds in the tree’s and sky, the presence of small, animals like the rabbit’s and squirrel’s, constantly checking the lay of the land specially where trees and bushes could be seen.

Sam (Snowy) Trent had up till now had lived a very busy life, his past occupations had been, Cattlemen, Stage driver, guard and Deputy Sheriff just to name a few of the many jobs that has been done in the past, his last job was working as a security officer for a railway company guarding gold bullion, this job paid well so having money in his jeans decided to drift, travelling across the country.

Perched on a large rock in a position where it was possible to see in all directions, Sam picked up his guitar and ran his fingers over the strings to check the tuning once satisfied starting to strum the instrument his ears tuned into the sound, then began to play and sing.

    Back in the saddle again,

Out where a friend is a friend,

    Where the longhorns cannot be,

    Among the lonesome gypsum weed,

    Back in the saddle again.

    Back in the saddle again,

Hi Hi Hey, I am on my way,

    Back in the saddle again.

Hi Hi Ho, Rocking to and fro,

Sam had a pleasant voice and loved singing and had won many a free beer by singing in saloons for fun, also for fun he sang at dances and friends weddings, of course because of his job also sang to calm down cattle as they bedded down for the night, then like tonight the clear air of the valley causing him to sing because of the sound.

After playing for a while until darkness approached Sam put his guitar away, walked over to the big brown horse and patted his neck and talked soothingly the big horse who liked that, the brown horse looked like a smoky brown colour so has been aptly named SMOKEY.

Sam had been given the large horse as a present just after Smokey had been born, and had spent a lot of time training the big horse, Smokey is a very intelligent animal with a great character who liked to play, and had also been trained to warn Sam if anyone or anything unusual happened, Smokey would wake Sam up if there was any unusual noise.

Going back to the fire Sam poured his final cup of coffee, pouring the remains of the coffee onto the fire rinsed the pot and threw the water left also onto the fire, looking around making a final check of the camp area, lay on his bedroll the .45 pistol near his hand, listening to the sounds of the night for a while, when happy turning over he closed his eyes and slept.

Just before dawn the sky having a little colour over the hills, Sam’s eye’s opened as normal and was awake instantly but his body stayed still his ears working overtime listening to the dawn chorus finding the sounds to be normal he climbed to his feet stretched and yawned.

Morning Smokey came his usual greeting to the big horse, the horse nodded its head, carried on having his breakfast of lush green grass.

As usual in the west the first thing a man did, was to sling the gun belt around his waist tied it down dropped the revolver into the holster, the colt .45 hung low on Sam’s right leg so the pistol butt would be level with his hand as his arm hung loose by his side, even though Sam is not what you would call fast, his gun being in this position gave him the best chance of drawing with relative ease.

Topping up the Billie and hanging it over the fire to boil the water to make coffee that had just been put into the coffee pot, proceeding with his ablutions Sam washed, shaved and dressed, by the time he’d completed these chows the water had boiled so made coffee putting the pot beside the fire to keep it warm, as beans were thrown into the remaining boiling water to cook, Sam completed his breakfast started breaking camp, after washing and packing all his gear and made sure the fire had been extinguished and the camp area cleared and cleaned up, he saddled and loaded Smokey, when satisfied Sam mounted and rode out heading in a southern direction knowing the town was in a day’s ride in that direction.

Just after 11 am Sam came across a weathered sign board parched by the weather with instructions carved into it informing him his destination is only two miles further on the sign read, TORVILLE 2 MILES POPULATION 372., Sam rode on, very soon arriving in town, his first need would be accommodation so headed for the towns hotel, tethering Smokey to the hitch rail Sam took his saddlebags, bedroll and guitar into the hotel, hiring a room where after depositing his gear locked the door then returning to the hitch rail, mounted up again and rode the big horse to the livery stable, on his arrival a man of about 50 years old came to meet him.

Howdy stranger can I help you the approaching man enquired.

Yep! I’d like a stall and a bag of oats Sam replied.

OK Sir come this way the man told Sam.

Thanks, forget the sir the name is Sam he told the holster.

Right Sam I am called Al; shall I take him for you Al asked.

No Al I will tend him myself, I will have to introduce you to him as Smokey is a one-man horse and does not take to strangers being near him Sam explained.

Right Sam he’s a good piece of horse flesh looks like this horse has staying power Al said.

Yer! He’s a pal Sam told him.

He’ll be safe here Sam Al remarked.

Oh! I have no doubt about that Al, do not try to ride him you will not like the result and I pity anyone who tries to steal him they will be in trouble don’t worry Sam said.

Sam introduced Al to Smokey and paid him for a week for his own stall and feeds each day, Sam informed Al I will be in each day to exercise Smokey returned to the hotel.

Torville, did not look any difference from any other Western town it consisted of two main streets where all the town business takes place these streets are normally called Main St. High St, Top St, or something like that, also in a town of this size there are many small lanes or back streets, the residents of the town lived on these lanes these residents often named the places where they lived so the lane may be called, The way home, Laughter walk, Our St, or almost anything, the residents constructed shacks they can also look like a maze. Torville turned out to be slightly different to most towns as it had four major streets North, South, East and West St’s.

Where the streets meet the town centre you have situated the four main places of business, two saloons the bank and the city hall, these buildings dominated the town, the saloons have fronts which were gaudily painted and well-lit at night as they were open day and night

At the end of South St. there is another place of entertainment the Mexican Cantina the cantina attracted lots of people who loved Mexican food and music, Mexican music is often very lively.

In each town only four buildings were brick built the rest were either wood or adobe built, the brick built buildings are the Jailhouse, the Bank, the City hall, and General store. The other major buildings in town are the, doctors, barbers, gunsmith, livery stable, dress shop, and restaurant at the end of East Street is a building away from the rest with a red light outside the door known as the local whore house. In most towns of the west this practise carried on as normal, in a land where the population had more men than women this business give a very good service to the community.

Sam decided to get some sleep as this evening he’d made up his mind to have a couple of drinks and to enjoy himself, Sam woke up at round about 8 pm before climbing into bed, a clean set of clothes were laid out so after a wash and shaved, put on his clean clothes proceeded to the bar.

Howdy beer please barman Sam ordered.

    Sure mister the barman replied.

The name is Sam not mister Sam told him.

OK Sam, my name is Steve came the reply.

    Right Steve Sam answered.

    You’re getting busy Sam observed.

It will be worse tomorrow Steve explained.

In that case I had better enjoy myself tonight Sam said smiling at Steve.

Tomorrow we get all the rowdy cowpokes in as it’s the weekend Steve explained.

Sam drank four beers while talking to Steve and playing blackjack and roulette and by this time it was 11 pm Sam moved back to the bar and ordered another beer.

Would you buy me a drink mister the female voice asked.

Sure will, Steve a drink for the lady Sam said turned and looked at the lovely girl with long blonde hair hanging down her back.

I haven’t seen you before she said to Sam.

You wouldn’t I arrived in town just before noon Sam replied.

What’s your name the lady asked.

    Sam, what’s yours Sam enquired.

Janet, are you staying long she asked.

I don’t know, I’ll take it one day at a time, I am in no hurry Sam told her.

What do you do Janet asked.

This and that came Sam’s reply.

So, you are just drifting she stated.

Yep! At the moment Sam said.

How about buying me another drink she asked.

OK Steve when you can another round please Sam ordered.

Right Sam I’ll be right there Steve answered.

Thanks Sam said Janet sounding a little tiddly.

Janet after the next drink, I have a room upstairs with a bed that is too big for one, would you like to share it with me Sam asked.

Sure, I thought you would never ask, but why wait let’s take our drinks up now Janet said with a smile on her lovely face.

Now why did I not think of that Sam exclaimed.

Steve give me a pack of cards Janet asked, Sam looked at her puzzled.

Picking up there drinks they walked hand in hand up the stairway on the landing Sam put his arm around her as they walked to his room. Once in the room they kissed, Janet took charge and gave Sam an order.

Take of your Stetson, gun belt and boots let’s sit on the bed she said.

OK what are you up to Sam asked.

We are going to play cards she produced the pack.

OK what do you want to play Sam asked.

We are going to play my game she said with a sneaky smile on her face, we will play three card brag, each hand you win I will remove an item of clothing and if I win you remove a garment, each time you win a hand you kiss the loser, when the first person is naked we go to bed is that OK with you Janet asked.

Yep! I think that is a great idea let’s get started came Sam’s reply.

OK you shuffle the cards Janet said.

After Sam shuffled the cards, Janet cut them passed the pack to Sam to deal, who dealt three cards each, slowly first Janet turned over a card, Sam turned over a card, they did this one card at a time until all cards showed.

Sam won the first hand, (Janet had a pair of two’s, Sam a pair of tens.) Janet removed one shoe Sam kissed her soundly on the lips, Janet knew what she wanted she stopped Sam from snogging, the slower the game took the more anticipation occurred causing slow arousal, each time they kissed Janet controlled it by cutting it short just when Sam started to get excited, Sam could feel the arousal (What is this girl doing to me) Sam thought, as his tool; started erecting between his legs, when both of them were down to their underwear Sam won the next hand both (Sam and Janet’s first card were kings but the next card Sam turned a ten and Janet a nine.) Janet removed her bra to reveal a beautiful bust, Sam kissed her right breast his hand caressed her left one flicking the nipple with his thumb Janet sighed loudly as she felt her breasts swelling (Ohhh!) that feels good but when Sam wanted to kiss the left breast Janet stopped him. The slow double striptease cause arousal they became more turned on each hand they played. (Sam now understood Janet’s game.)

Ah! Ah! The rule is only one kiss at a time she said.

When the pair had only their pants left only the last hand had to be played, the cards as usual were turned over one at a time, Sam’s tool was throbbing was so aroused, (Sam turned over an ace, Janet’s first card was an ace, both the second cards were six’s, Sam’s third card was a seven Janet turned over an eight.) Janet whooped with delight as she won as Sam was about to take of his underpants Janet once again stopped him.

    Let me she said.

Janet slowly pulled down Sam’s pants, and as they were now aroused by this time, Sam’s full erection once free flicked up and pointed straight at Janet’s face, as she pushed Sam’s shorts to the floor her mouth enveloped the big throbbing rampant erection, her tongue licked the bell end (Oh! God) was murmured, caressing the rounded breasts and hard nipples, Sam enjoyed this for a short time picked her up and threw her on the bed she giggled as Sam pulled of her damp pants and jumped into the bed beside her, their lips instantly met his hand grabbed her breasts, as Janet’s hand pulled Sam’s erection, Sam rubbed her already wet crotch they were both fully aroused and eager Sam could hold back no longer his erected member entered her expecting body Janet gasped, Sam thrusted deeply into her body as deep and fast, making love vigorously going faster and faster the sounds of joy omitted from their lips both loving the sensation until Sam’s body jerked and the world as they knew it disappeared, this created another feeling as they reached a climatic end to their love causing an explosion giving them a feeling that sent them to heaven covered in sweat they lay in each other’s arms.

Janet that was fantastic I’ve never made love like that before, thank you Sam said.

No thank you, come on let’s do it again without the cards Janet said.

Janet and Sam made love over and over until exhausted, lying together their naked sweat covered bodies entwined they fell asleep until morning, where they made love again.

As Sam is in no hurry lying for a while watching Janet the beautiful blonde beside him who also decided to have a lie in she went back to sleep, after lying for a while sliding quietly from the bed keeping the noise down so not to wake Janet, washing and shaving dressed leaving the locked room slipping the key under the door, Sam proceeded to the dining room where after eating a hearty breakfast before leaving for the livery stable to exercise Smokey.

Even though Sam did not have a job at this present time, it had been a matter of habit to know his where about’s. Sam decided to give Smokey a bit of exercise his intention is to explore a bit, so for the first two miles, pushing Smokey to a fast pace it took him only a short time to cover the distance intended, when Sam slowed Smokey down to a walk this action lets the horse blow after the run, turning to the left Sam proceeded to circle the town, going a short distance Sam saw a ranch boundary marker posts but kept to the town side of the markers.

Sam missed nothing as he rode along, seeing a couple of steers from a nearby ranch also wild animals like deer, rabbits and various types of birds, arriving on the rim of a canyon stopping to survey the terrain ahead of him. It did go through his mind that this place could be a good place for an ambush if you had someone you wished to ambush and could entice him there. It would also be a good place to hide or hole up if required.

It took over an hour to scout the canyon, finding overgrown pathways, caves you could live in and a tunnel you could pass through which came out over the town, and had now reached the end of the canyon. Sam had gathered a lot of information about the place in one cave a stream ran through it and formed a lovely pool of water in the middle of the cave, the water tasted sweet cool it is spring water and so clear you could see the bottom of the pool, Sam continued around the town, south east of the town turning towards town where a bridge crossed a river, a couple of young boys sat on the bank fishing, there catch did not seem bad by the looks of the fish lying on the bank looks like fish for dinner. Sam did not get a surprise when the roads crossed the trail to town almost exactly where leaving it.

Moving at a leisurely pace the man and horse headed for the town centre, as there was not a lot more that could be done.

Right back to the barn for you he said to the horse, Smokey nodded his head as if understanding.

Retrieving his key from the man at the desk returned to the room, the room had been cleaned up by Janet, she had made the bed, tidied up, dusted and cleaned up the floor the room looked a lot better than when first hiring the room.

Sam decided to have a nap before going down to the bar to have a few pints and just relax and enjoy himself, Sam slept for about four hours, rising, thrown water in his face to take the sleep from his eyes proceeding to the bar.

    Beer please Steve Sam ordered.

    OK Sam came the reply.

The bar tonight was quite busy when Sam arrived at the saloon, today is Saturday and the hands from the surrounding ranches came into town as it was there night off. Sam drank his first drink and ordered a second one, the place filled up quite fast, after a while you could hardly stand also it took longer to wait for a drink so Sam ordered a pitcher of beer after receiving the beer
